As many people are no doubt aware this year's draft is being touted as one of the more talented of the last few years.

Due to compo picks it appears it also going to be quite complicated. According to a thread on BF started before the season, the final order is going to look something like this:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=870323
1 - Port priority pick (sorry Port fans, I do hope you start winning)
2 - 18th
3 - 17th
4 - 16th
5 - 15th
6 - 14th
7 - 13th
8 - 12th
9 - 11th
10 - 10th
11 - 9th
12 - Scully compo #1 (Melb)
13 - Scully compo #2 (Melb)
14 - Ward compo (Dogs)
15 - Davis compo (Adel)
16 - Ablett compo #1 (GC)
17 - Ablett compo #2 (Geel)
18 - 8th
19 - 7th
20 - 6th
21 - 5th
22 - 4th
23 - 3rd
24 - 2nd
25 - 1st
26 - GWS priority pick
27 - Bock compo (Rich)
28 - Brennan compo (GC)
29 - Harbrow compo (Bris)
30 - Palmer compo (Freo)
Just wonder if this is in fact true. Do the Ablett, Scully and Ward comps kick in after 9th spot?
If that is indeed the case, there seems a helluva lot of difference between finishing 8th and 9 th on the ladder.

I thought the compos kick in right after your first round pick or at the end of the round. There is two types of first round compos, a end of first round pick and a pic following your first pick.

It's bloody hard to follow. The sooner it's done with the better.

That's the thing. They are here to stay thanks to Free Agency. Another lever the AFL has to manipulate the league.

I could be wrong but with Melbourne I believe their compo picks are directly after their first round pick. Therefore if they end up last they get picks 1, 2 & 3.

If thats the case then im sure Demon fans will be well pleased with how the seasons going so far.

There's a 3rd type of first round compo. Mid 1st round which comes after the non-finals teams have had their picks. So Melbourne would have their normal first rounder, the pick straight after that plus a pick after the non-finals teams picks. Works out to be 1,2,13 at the moment.

they get 14 as well in that scenario i think

One of Melbournes compo picks comes right after where they finish on the ladder. The 2nd one comes in between the teams that finish 8th and 9th.

As for Poort getting a priority pick, it is up the AFL to decide.

So currently Melbourne have pick 1 and 2 (compo). They would only have to use a 2nd round pick to get Jack Viney as well, no other team can put in a higher bid if they finish bottom.

Compo picks at the start of first round for underperforming teams are gone. Hence the No.1 pick in that list is incorrect. The No.1 pick will definately go to the 18th team

On the money, they have a compo pick which activates directly after there first pick, and a mid first round pick which activates after non finals teams picks.

So as tigs2010 said, pick 1-2 and 13.

Nope. Essentially Melbourne if they finish last, like any other normal year will get pick 1, and at the discretion of the AFL may get a priority pick, but if they don't it's just pick 1, but because of compensation picks activated, they get Pick 1(Standard pick) Pick 2(Compensation Pick) and Pick 13(Compensation Pick).

so they only get a mid range pick for losing Scully, who was a no1 2 years previously? That's pretty unfair.

2 picks. 1 directly after their first rounder, and the one after 9th place.

The only positive out of not winning today our pick's are before the Bummer's and the cheats.

Even with all the compo garbage etc do we still get Pick 9 ?
