MATCH REPORT
by Streak

In perfect conditions for football, the Tigers fell short against the resurgent Eagles last Sunday in Perth. It was a predictable result to many of the Tiger army, but for those of us at the match there was certainly a lot of interesting things to take from the game.

Pregame saw the Tigers go in without Newman and Batchelor, and their absences as much as anything else were always going to be very hard to cover. Subiaco is a ground that requires pace and good crisp ball movement, and rebounding defenders are an essential key to winning.

As it was, the Eagles massive ruck advantage, with arguably the best tandem in the comp at the moment lining up against Angus Graham, was always a hurdle that took on mountainous proportions for the Tigers. But without their regular HBFs, the Tigers looked to be in a lot of trouble trying to get the ball moving out of the backline. Rance was one player who appeared to suffer from this. A number of times he turned the ball over but it looked more a case of players not executing the gameplan than poor disposal on his behalf.

The game started brightly enough for the Tigers, who with Miller putting in a first and most likely last cameo, kicked three early goals and had a slender lead approaching the 20 minute mark. From there though, the Eagles grinding pressure started to wear down the Tigers.

The endeavour from the Richmond players was there, and was maintained largely throughout the match, but the Eagles' class meant that they were never seriously threatened and were constantly looking to build on their lead. Maligned players such as Morton and Edwards were running very hard and trying to create options, something that seemed to be missing in recent weeks. But the constant Eagles pressure was something to be marvelled at, even from an opposition perspective.

The class gulf between the sides exploded in the second qtr although the Eagles dominance was not truly reflected on the scoreboard. It was the Naitanui and Kerr show as they put on a clinic. Kerr racked up 13 well used disposals for the quarter, While big Nic decided to turn on a unstoppable display. He kicked goals, he ran the ball forward, he dominated the ruck, he took pack marks and did just about everything else. It was reminiscent of the performance of Stephen Michael, the great WA ruckman of the late 70s and early 80s, at his best.

Into the third quarter the Eagles lead blew out to beyond 7 goals, but the Tigers were not going to lie down this week. Three late goals saw the lead at the final change down to 27 points. But really, it was that class difference that was telling. During that late run by the Tigers, the Eagles bench was Kerr, Shuey and Cox. Any hope that the Tigers fresher legs might result in an upset was soon put to rest in the last quarter when those three came back onto the ground.

The last quarter was really an Eagles procession, only poor kicking at goal preventing annihilation. The Eagles kicked 5.7 to 1.1, and the ball was virtually kept permanently in their forward line for extended periods.

For the Tigers, Dustin Martin was super impressive. Playing to a well beaten ruck, he won a number of clearances against the tide and his game was undoubtedly underrated by many. Clearly best on ground for mine. Deledio was a rock in a backline that always looked like it might implode, but hung in gallantly. Shane Tuck would have had many scratching their heads as to his recent absence from the team, and while Mitch Morton will not game many plaudits for his game, he ran very hard and was constantly trying to create options.

Jack Riewoldt kicked four goals, but what was most noteworthy was the running he did. He just kept running and running. Not sure if it was a tactic to free him up from body contact (possible rib injury is the rumour) or to try and make the forward line less predictable and create options, but gee he did a lot of running.

The Eagles are clearly the most improved team in the competition this year, and are a side that the Tigers are aiming to emulate in terms of performance in the coming years. Yet the Eagles look to have some issues of their own coming out of this match. Aside from injuries to Cox and Rosa, it was very apparent that they rely heavily on older players like Kerr, Glass and Cox. One wonders whether they have the list structure to really progress beyond this years performance. Special note should be made of Gaff. This kid is going to be a ripper player.

EDITORIAL

In the voting this week, Lids' 31 disposal match and freak goal saw him comfortably take the win. This has moved him into 3rd place at Dusty's expense and within striking distance of Nahas in 2nd. Other notable movers this week include Rance's continued consistency down back and Tuck's ability to win the ball and attract the notice of the PRE voters. In 6 matches this season Tuck has already attracted more votes than a number of players that have played more than twice the number of matches in McGuane, Edwards, King and Conca.

This Sunday sees the Tigers take on the Swans at the 'G in our last home match of the season (a season that flew by in a blur). I'm looking forward to seeing the Tigers run out on Sunday arvo and hopefully show a bit more fight than we have witnessed over the past couple of months.

Thanks to Streak for, again, providing a great match report. It would be great if we could get a new match reporter for this Sunday's game. Post here or PM me if you're keen.

Without getting too technical I'll just give a vote of support for our backline who all did very well and kept some decent players quiet into the bargain.

3-Rance
2-Houli
1-Thirsty

Not knocking the players, only that you gave two threes.

Oh I see...I'd better take 2 from Thirsty's tally. I'd give every player 3 votes as a good team effort if I could.
