MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC
A cold winter Sunday saw the Tigers take on the Cats at the dim, other-worldly ground of Etihad in round 18. The Tigers have been on the slide over the past couple of months after a promising start to the 2011 season and went into the match with the familiar feeling of no September action on the cards and playing for development. Conversely the Cats have been, along with the Pies, the form team of the 2011 season with the pre-season predictions of a post-Ablett/Thompson slide obviously premature. The Tigers have been pretty woeful against the Cats in recent years, with their most recent match a 100+ point drubbing and who can forget the massacre at the Dome only a few years ago.
The game itself was a pretty sloppy spectacle as a whole. The first half was difficult to watch as a Tigers supporter. It didn't help that I was surrounded by Cats supporters on the 3rd tier of the stadium, but the Tigers were putting on a cringeworthy display in the middle. The Tigers had no answers for the Cats offensive press throughout the first half and consistently tried to move the ball through the Geelong zone by hand and consistently turned it over. They played a high risk game and didn't have the requisite skills to pull it off. As a result the Cats went inside their forward 50 at will and scored reasonably freely throughout the first half. The Cats hit most of their targets in that half and the Tigers struggled to hit any. The circling handball game that has not been very prevalent under Hardwick, re-emerged as the Tigers struggled to deal with the zone and had very few attacking thrusts during the first half. A solitary goal to Riewoldt after a free kick for a hold by Scarlett was the only major kicked by the team in a half of footy, compared to the 11 majors that the home team mananged. The game was over at half time.
The second half was just a test of pride for the Tigers and they did manage to prevent a Geelong blow out. Some of that was due to some errors creeping into the Cats' game, but the Tigers were more attacking and did manage to match the Cats for goals, 6 each. The game eventually petered out and I must say that it was one of the less interesting matches to be a spectator at and at times the skill levles were downright ugly. Perhaps a touch of apathy has crept into my feelings this season as that all too familiar feeling of another one almost over and no finals to show for it. Either way I am still keen to watch the Tigers, I have just become less sensitive to the losses at the moment. Numb? Maybe.
In the voting this week Cotchin was the clear standout after his remarkable 38 possession match. He struggled with his efficiency, however a lot of that has to do with where he wins the ball. It is exciting thinking about how much he has developed in only his first full season of AFL and it is scary to think that he has a lot of improvement in him. He would certainly be a short-priced favourite for the Jack Dyer Medal this year. Alex Rance also featured in the voting and has now moved into the top 5 overall, an accurate reflection on his development into our most reliable backman this season. The return of Tuck for this match again raised questions over his omission for most of this season. He is hard at it, wins the ball and is good overhead. I thought he was clearly one of our best this week and certainly see a place for him in the side.
The Tigers have a bye this week, which will allow them to re-assess and recharge mentally and physically prior to the last month of footy for 2011. That begins next weekend out west against the in-form Eagles. If any WA-based Tigers are planning on attending and are keen to provide a report after the match, let me know.
