MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC

Round 17 saw the Tigers head north for their second sold 'home' game of the season. This time the setting was far north Queensland and like the last sold match in Darwin the opponent was the team sitting on the bottom of the ladder. This time the Tigers came up against the young Gold Coast Suns who have consistently struggled in their first season in the AFL. In a number of matches they have been comprehensively dismantled and many sides have had healthy percentage boosts after facing them. This round was the Tigers turn and they came out the blocks in imposing fashion, dominating the possession, forcing turnovers and kicking freely (if not always truly). At quarter time the Tigers led by 6 goals to 1 and it felt like it was going to be a pleasant Saturday afternoon to watch the footy without the fear of the opposition chasing us down. However, one worry at that stage was that we were horribly wasteful in front of goal, a trait that has crept into the Tigers game in recent weeks, in stark contrast to the accuracy demonstrated by the team at the beginning of the season. 14 scoring shots to 3 at quarter time suggests that the game could have been iced that early in the proceedings, but the margin was limited to only 6 goals. Another worry was that some of our goals were kicked from well outside the 50 metre arc, suggesting a strong breeze favoured the end that we were kicking to.

The second worry turned out to be significant as the second quarter saw the Suns come at the Tigers strongly. The Tigers did not defend the space around the 50m arc very well and the Gold Coast punished them for this, kicking a number of goals with the assistance of the breeze from that range. When the Suns kicked their 6 goal for the term, they hit the lead as the Tigers failed to record a major for the term. It was an amazingly frustrating quarter to witness as the Tigers let such an adavantage slip and went into the half time break trailing the favourites for the wooden spoon.

The second half was abysmal from the Tigers as they failed to capitalise on the wind advantage in the third. After the first half it was clear that it would be hard to defend a small lead in the final quarter, but the Tigers over possessed the ball and failed to score heavily, going into the final quarter with only a 13 point lead. Again the Tigers were wasteful in front of goal and bombed a number of opportunities from long range when better options were available. 2.7 for the term tells the tale.

The 13 points always felt vulnerable and as it turns out, the Suns were able to wrest back the lead and go onto a reasonably comfortable victory. Again, the Tigers were embarrased by a struggling side. Again, the Tigers lose one of their sold matches (which is no excuse). Again, the Tigers struggled to score freely and accurately - 6 goals to quarter time, 3 goals for the remainder. It was a tough pill to swallow, but highlighted some key deficiencies in the team and their mentality.

This week sees the Tigers take on Geelong at Etihad. The scene and setting of the worst game of footy that I have personally witnessed. Living on the surfcoast, I have plenty of Cats supporting mates that have enjoyed the dominance of their side over ours in recent years. Let's just hope we improve our style of play and at least appear somewhat competitive. After the performances of the past month, I can't say I'm overly confident.

Carn' the Tiges!
