MATCH REPORT
by Big Cat Lover

Traditional rivals. Traditional timeslot. And some would say traditional result.

Thoughts raced through my head as the 1.30 (albeit at 1.40) from Spotswood rattled through Footscray. Can we contain Carlton's run? Can we overcome the massive discrepancy in experience? Will young guns Chimp and Dusty take it up to the champ Judd and his understudy Murphy? Can young bull Browney negate the twin towers of Warnock and Kruezer? Will Will measure up without McGuane? Can we expose Carlton’s lack of good talls in defence (ironic hey)? Can Rance & Nahas maintain their improvement?

Well, I didn’t need too long to see most of my questions were going to be answered in the negative. Despite the awkward windy conditions Carlton looked and played like the Top 4 side they are. They had a pair of rucks who gave their mids a better than 50/50 shot, a midfield with a class and depth, a forward line with options, and a defence with run and a playing group with purpose. Richmond were a throwback to the TW days, spending much of the time missing tackles, missing targets, missing passion. In a day with less positives than a bout of diarrhea you could at least argue that Rance & Nahas continued their fine seasons and Foley battled hard all game.

Dimma declared he will scrub the game from the records and never bring it up again. Lets hope the supporters never have to sit through a performance like that again.

What to make of it all? Darksiders would say we simply reverted to type whilst brightsiders will point to the average age and experience and say games like these are to be expected from such a young group. It certainly was a clear demonstration that we have a long way to go.

As I journeyed back on the 5.31 to Werribee from Flinders St I couldn’t get the song “Road to Nowhere” out of my head. I looked up the lyrics and there is a vesre in the song that offers some solace for us long-suffering tiger supporters.

“I’m feelin’ okay this mornin’,
And you know,
We’re on the road to paradise,
Here we go, here we go.

Many thanks to BCL for undertaking the painful task of reporting on the flogging by Carlton. I had the benefit of being in Hawaii at the time, so the pain of such a drubbing was at least distant. I received a message from my Mother-In-Law that (paraphrasing) read: Worst. Game. Ever. I figured that she was exaggerating a tad (it would take some topping of the Geelong fiasco at the dump a few years ago), however I felt that, at least, I had only missed a match that would have aged me ever more slightly.

In the voting we see that Rance and Nahas were fancied as the two best tigers (perhaps ranked 24th and 25th overall?). Rance clearly has had to shoulder a lot of the defensive burden in our depleted backline and it is nice to see him stepping up to the task.

Stay tuned for Essendon results.

I guess the pain of two poor losses in two weeks was too much for PREnders as it was a quiet week at the polls and no one was silly enough to want to describe the capitulation of the Tigers against the Bombers. I was still overseas and managed to follow the first quarter before going to bed. At that stage we were looking good. We had won the quarter (a rare feat this season) and appeared to be playing with more gusto than the previous week (all of this from postings on PRE). I wasn't too pleased to awake to the final scoreline. Allowing the Bombers to overtake us in the third and kick the final 10 goals of the match seems a bit timid to me.

In the voting we saw three debutantes to the leaderboard in Helbig, Griffiths and Thursfield. Cotchin continued his good season with another best-Tiger-on-ground performance.

Apologies for the delay in reporting. This week sees a return to normal transmission. ;D

Tonight should (SHOULD!) see the Tigers notch up another victory as they take on the kids of the Gold Coast. If anyone would like to provide a report for the match tonight, let me know.
