MATCH REPORT
by Panthera tigris FC
So it falls to the editor to report on the most disappointing game of the season. Fair enough. I'll keep it brief as I am sure I am not the only one who doesn't really want to re-live what was ultimately a forgettable game of footy for the Tigers.
Heading up to Darwin for a 'home game' and a $500,000 pay cheque from the AFL, the Tigers went in hot favourites against a seemingly basket case of a side in the Port Power. Port Adelaide were languishing on the bottom of the ladder while the Tigers were the media's love child after a spirited win against the Bombers in front of 83,000 supporters the previous week. What a difference a week can make. The dodgy floodlights appeared to sense what was coming and did what they could to try to put a halt to them match. Unfortunately they managed to stay on and allowed the match to unfold.
The first quarter was not pretty to watch as both sides struggled to maintain possession and scoring appeared difficult. Skill errors were the name of the game and the Tigers went in at quarter time down by 2 points in another first quarter defeat (that is now 9 out of 10 matches that we haven't managed to lead after the first quarter this season). The game improved (slightly) in the second quarter and the Tigers managed to get on top, but were unable to build a sizeable lead. However, I was pretty confident going in at half time with a small lead.
The second half was all Port Adelaide as they kicked 10 goals to 6, which included some late goals to the Tigers after the game was already lost. Port Adelaide were hungrier and cleaner and ultimately made the Tigers look pedestrian. The 15 point final margin flattered the Tigers as the Power coasted home to see themselves off the bottom of the ladder.
Just when you think the Tigers have turned a corner, they revert back to their old tricks. A win in this game would have been great: a week off and in the 8 before heading to Sydney. As it is, we are in our old familiar 9th place and have it all to do. Having said that, I was in the 'no chance of finals camp' at the beginning of the season and if I was told we would be in 9th after 10 rounds I would be rapt. With 2011 being a development year for the young group I am pretty happy with the progress we have seen this season.
So we now have a week off to regroup and refocus before the Sydney game. I am sure Dimma will be working them hard before that match.
In the voting this week there were two clear stand outs and I am sure we broke the record for incomplete ballots as many voters elected to only cast their 3 and 2 votes (or in some cases just their 3). Bachar Houli was very good in this game. His skills were clean, he found a lot of the ball and shut out his opponent. The substandard skills of a number of his team mates may have made him stand out in contrast, but he was clearly the best Tiger on the ground in my opinion and deserving of the victory this week. Nathan Foley was also back to his leather poisoning best as he got off the leash with Martin and Cotchin below par and well contained. Axel racked up 34 disposals, 14 contested, in a solid display.
I will be looking for a match reporter for the match next Sunday, so if you are a Sydney Tiger, a Travelling Tiger or an interested TV Tiger, let me know if you're keen.
Carn' the Tiges!
