MATCH REPORT
by SkillzThatKillz

It had been an important week for both the Richmond and Essendon football clubs. There had been a big build-up to the game with regard to both the cultural aspects of the Dreamtime at the 'G match and also where both clubs were sitting with regard to form and ladder position. The game had the potential to be a real season definer in front of more than 80,000 spectators.
Essendon came off a big away win against the Lions last week and had won their 5th game out of 8 starts (1 of these was a draw), sitting comfortably at 3rd on the AFL ladder. Although key mids Watson and Hocking missed through injury/suspension they were replaced with the experienced Brent Stanton and fringe midfielder Henry Slattery. Crameri and Zaharakis, Essendon’s 2 leading goalkickers for the season had been in scintillating form and stopping them would be no easy task.
Richmond on the other hand came off what was arguably their worst loss of the year against the Bulldogs who missed several key players. The Bulldogs were effectively able to win the game in the first quarter after a flurry of goals before the first break which highlighted an issue with a series of slow starts for Richmond with the club failing to win a first quarter of footy so far this season.
The Tigers had come into the game with a 3 win, 4 losses and 1 draw as their record to date sitting outside the top 8. However, two of these wins were against lowly Brisbane and the Kangaroos, with Fremantle being the only top 8 team the Tigers have defeated this year. Another important factor why the game was so important is the fact that the Tigers are only one of a few teams not to have had their first bye yet so their position outside the 8 isn’t entirely accurate as most other clubs above and below them on the ladder have played one less game.

1st Quarter
Richmond started the game with midfield dominance getting the first 7 clearances. Cotchin was instrumental in the early dominance with 5 possessions in the first 5 minutes of the game. Andrew Browne playing his first game of the season started well in the ruck. Although the Tigers had the run of the play for the first half of the quarter they were unable to reflect it upon the scoreboard.
The Tigers finally kicked the first goal of the game at the 16 minute mark of the first quarter as Jake King followed up a Riewoldt snap at goal from a ball up inside the Tigers forward 50. The Bombers answered shortly after with a good Zaharakis goal.
Conca was awarded a 50m penalty from defensive 50 after putting his body on the line which ended up in a contested mark to King who once again goaled for the Tigers.

The Bombers were then able to kick another goal from dangerous forward Crameri who was otherwise held very well for the rest of the game.
Richmond was up by a single point at the end of the quarter, winning their only first quarter so far this season, and the score did not reflect the Tigers dominance on the game. James Hird gave his team a spray at quarter time and was not happy with his teams effort.

Richmond 2.3.15
Essendon 2.2.14

2nd Quarter
Both sides kicked 4 goals each in the 2nd quarter as the Essendon midfield began to perform. Riewoldt and Vickery both kicked 2 goals each in a see-sawing quarter of footy. Cotchin and Deledio were fantastic with Deledio playing primarily in the midfield and Foley chipping in with important possessions. The Bombers midfield began to switch on in this quarter gaining a high number of clearances and contested possessions.

Richmond 6.5.41
Essendon 6.6.42

3rd Quarter
We all know the 3rd quarter is the ‘Premiership Quarter’ and what a quarter of footy it was! In front of a crowd of 83,563 in a finals pressure cooker atmosphere, the Tigers served up the type of footy to make other clubs envious.
It wasn’t a case of the Tigers dominating the play either as the Bombers had plenty of clearances over the ground and were actually looking better than they did in the first half. The Tigers just made the most of their opportunities kicking 7 goals in the quarter out of 10 scoring shots whilst the Bombers kicked only 3 goals from 7 scoring shots, with one of the goals coming from a free-kick decision against Grigg for a deliberate rushed behind.
The primary reason for the Tigers winning the quarter wasn’t that of the forwards or mids, but that of our defence. Our defence stood up to the challenge. Although some of the Bombers goals were kicked quite easily, our defenders had to withstand a plethora of inside 50 entries by the Bombers and kept repelling them.
Rance was amazing and played arguably his best game in the yellow and black. He put his body on the line time after time (finished with a game high 5 free kicks), took good courageous marks in defence and disposed of the ball well. He didn’t panic which has been a blight on his game in the past and looks more comfortable in his role at full back. He played on a bigger opponent too in Bellchambers who didn’t kick a single goal when up forward for the whole game.
Grimes also played very very well along with Batchelor and Newman. Newman kicked an amazing goal from a run out of defence and it was good seeing him play some half back as opposed to the back pocket. He played the old Deledio role very well in parts.
Tuck was subbed off for Farmer in this quarter.
McGuane again did well and spoiled all opposition marks coming his way.
Riewoldt kicked 2 of our 7 goals for the quarter.

Richmond 13.8.86
Essendon 9.10.64

Last Quarter
With a 22 point lead to the Tigers coming into the last quarter, the Bombers had to start the quarter quickly and put on some scoreboard pressure. And that they did with Davey kicking a goal in the 2nd minute.
The Tigers were able to grind out the play and didn’t allow the Bombers to score a single point in the next 10 minutes. Riewoldt got some touches on the wing and was able to win a pivotal contest ending in an inside 50 and uncontested mark to Foley who goaled to make the lead 23 points.
The Bombers were able to then kick 2 goals in succession putting the lead back to within 11 points.
Dylan Grimes sustained a hamstring injury after putting his body on the line and making a crucial diving spoil of the ball in the Richmond forward 50.
A great snap to Nahas in the latter part of the term killed off the Bombers fightback and Vickery iced the win with a fantastic 45m on the run goal at the end of the game.
The Tigers eventual winners by 16 points in probably the most important game for them so far this year.

Talking Point - Essendon’s Big Men
One of Essendon’s biggest assets are their 3-man ruck brigade. Hille, Ryder and underrated Tom Bellchambers are big reasons as to the success of the Bombers so far this year as each of them have the ability to ruck and play forward, whilst being able to win the ball over the ground.
Andrew Browne came into the Richmond side for his 5th ever game and 1st game of the year against the Bombers ruck division. Browne actually won the hitouts in the first quarter playing a lone hand in the ruck. I believe it was in the 2nd quarter when Browne copped a hit to his eye which resulted in a massive shiner. When he came out on the ground in the 3rd quarter it was obvious he could barely open one of his eyes as the swelling was that bad.
Showing true tiger spirit, Browne battled on and was assisted by Vickery and Post who both had short stints in the ruck against the bigger bodied Essendon ruckmen. To their credit they battled well and held their own.
When Grimes went off with his hamstring injury midway through the last quarter, we were down to 1 on the bench at one stage (Tuck subbed off, Grimes injured) as Conca was off also getting attention to a large gash on his leg. When Browne came off for a breather he was that spent he couldn’t catch his breath before he was forced to go back on the field again.
So, Browne battled and he won. Has done more than enough to stay in the team, putting a great deal of pressure on a return of Angus Graham, who from reports didn’t play a great game for Coburg the next day. Essendon’s big men only had one goal for the game between them so credit goes to Rance and McGuane for their defensive efforts also.

Next Week
The Tigers play out of form Port Adelaide next week in Darwin before having their first bye for the year.

EDITORIAL

Well, I think Skillz has covered the details of last week's match in his comprehensive report. An excellent summary of an excellent game.

In the voting this week 87 PREnders cast their ballots in one of the highest (if not the highest) turn out in the history of the award. Not surprising considering the nature of the win and the size of the crowd!

Trent Cotchin chose to showcase his sublime skills on the best possible week, with the turnout propelling him well into the lead. He was simply sublime and well deserving of the accolades. Alex Rance was the big mover this week, moving up 8 spots into the top 10 after his best game in Tigers colours. I was amazed at his game and hope that he can continue at that type of level in the future. If he does, some of backline concerns will certainly be alleviated. Deledio continued his good form and has consolidated 3rd position on the leaderboard.

If any of the PREnders heading north (or in at least one case, south), or any Darwin based Tigers would like to provide a report for next weeks awards post, please let me know.

Carn' the Tiges!

Hard to find the 1 vote but thought Vickery tried hard and a couple of nice pick ups off the ground in tough conditions for big men. On any other day not enough for a vote. But we need to give it to someone.
