I closed my column last week wondering how long the Tigers could keep their recent blistering form up. It had been almost a decade since the Tigers had managed to string five wins together; however with the recent form of their opponents in the Kanagroos and their own recent form they actually went in as favourites with the bookies. Nearly 43,000 fans showed up on a wet, Sunday afternoon to see the game and early signs suggested that we were in for a willing contest from both sides. The conditions were not conducive to an exhibition of silky skills and making territory through bombing it forward seemed to be the best tactic for the day. For the first quarter and into the second the game remained tight, essentally both teams going score for score. However, a late hit from Cotchin on Wright that eventually saw him cop a four week suspension marked the turning point in the game. Up until that point Cotchin had been prominent, if not a bit kamikaze. In the conditions he had been diving in to secure the ball in the contests with seemingly little regard for his own welfare. After the late hit, his influence on the game dropped noticeably and that coincided with the Kangaroos taking a stranglehold on the game. Towards the end of the second quarter and for the entirety of the third, the Kangaroos took control, scoring freely and by three quarter time had left little doubt about the eventual result of the game with a seven goal lead in the pouring rain. The final quarter saw the Tigers kick three goals, however they continued to be outplayed and the Kangaroos ambled to a solid 50 point victory.
The victory was achieved through ruck dominance, with the Kangaroo ruck duo completely monstering Gus, who appeared sore to me and Vickery who needs to continue to work on his physicality. As a second year ruckman, he has time on his side in this regard. Plenty of Tigers appeared to be 'off' on the day as well, with the team as a whole appearing to lack the desire that had become such a hallmark of their game through their recent victories. Players that had played key roles in these victories in White and Farmer went unnoticed for much of the match and Tambling continued his wretched form in 2010. After sharking a ball early in first quarter and delivering inside 50, I had high hopes that the conditions would suit Richie and he would shake off his indifferent form with a solid game. However, it wasn't to be as he became essentially invisible until he managed a few touches in the final quarter to the Bronx cheers of the Richmond faithful when the game was essentially over. One thing I did notice during the game was that he was ignored by teammates when providing an option on at least three occasions. I don't know if this a regular occurence as I haven't really paid close attention in other games, but he was certainly overlooked for more contested options on a few occasions.
Not surprisingly, the turn out at the polls this week was significantly down on previous weeks after such a lacklustre performance. Cousins was the highest poller after racking up huge numbers in the first half. He constantly provided an option, finding the ball at will and feeding off by hand to the outside runners. It was his best game of the year for the Tigers, however, like the rest of the team, his second half was quiet compared to the first. Dan Connors continues to poll well and watching him play it is easy to see why. He racked up 30 touches in his sweeping defensive role and generally used the ball well. His evasive skills were on display, as usual, and he was influential in delivering ball forward for the Tigers. Deledio and Tuck also appeared on a number of ballots this week. Deledio continues to work well in tandem with Connors off half back and looked to be set for a huge game after racking up big possession numbers in the first half. However, he faded noticeably in the second half ending up with a solid, if not spectacular, 24 touches. Tucky was his normal hard self and when the team looked tired in the third half I thought he was our most dedicated player, constantly doing the grunt work and trying to win the hard ball. His whopping 13 clearances (second best was Swallow with 9) are a testament to his hard work that is often overlooked.
This week sees the depleted Tigers lineup, with a backline lacking Moore and Thursfield and a midfield lacking Cotchin, Jackson and Foley, come up against the top of the ladder Pies. It will be a big challenge for the team, however this is a match that I rarely miss. With a family littered with Collingwood supporters I relish the opportunity to see the Tigers take home an unlikely victory. There should be a big crowd on Saturday afternoon at the 'G to enjoy the spectacle with. Does it get any better?
Carn' the Tiges!
