You've got to love AFL footy at the Cattery. Small(ish) ground, parochial crowd, standing room in the terraces. As it turned out that parochial Cats crowd was decidedly smug and occasionally sympathetic
vomit) as a Geelong side lacking some of their stars in Ablett, Scarlett and Rooke gave the Tigers a footy lesson. The early signs weren't good as Richmond were constantly harrassed by the Cats and turned the ball over consistently under the tackling pressure of Geelong. In contrast the bigger, older and visibly stronger Geelong players walked through Richmond tackles throughout the match. This disparity in the physical pressure in the match was coupled with a lack of a dangerous forward marking option for Richmond, which led to a flurry of rebound goals throughout the day. These glaring differences in skill and pressure were reflected on the scoreboard as the Cats registered 13 goals to Richmond's 2 in the first half and things didn't improve much in the second half, with Geelong scoring 9 goals to 5. There were stages in the first half when I thought we would struggle to score a couple of goals for the match! A Geelong supporting friend of mine was quite pleased as he had a flutter on Geelong leading by 39+ at halftime at $1.70. I asked him what they were paying for 65+?!
As the game went on I thought of this column wondering what positives I could report on and I really struggled to come up with any. It was truly a comprehensive 100+ point victory for Geelong against a disappointing Richmond outfit.
In the voting this week the turnout was, not suprisingly, a new low for the season, with only 44 ballots cast. However, those that did vote clearly viewed Newman as the best Tiger on the ground. He played a composed game, considering the supply coming into the Cats' forward line, racking up 28 disposals and 7 marks, cutting off a number of Geelong attacks and used the ball well. Deledio appears to be coming into a rich vein of form, as he continues to provide good rebound off the half back line. His 34 disposals were one of the standouts of the day as his booming, accurate kicks provided most of the offense out of the Richmond back line. Unfortunately, the lack of a true, mature forward target and lack of any real forward pressure meant that many of these forays forward were repelled in quick time. Tuck was also recognised for his 38 possession game. With that much of the ball, if he was able to dispose the ball with more composure he would certainly have polled better. After a lot of conjecture over the past year, in my opinion Tuck is playing an important role in our developing side, with his bigger body, his desire and ability to win the footy and his willingness to put his body on the line. Jack Riewoldt, who was our only goal scorer in the first half also polled votes and has now moved into the outright lead of the PRE Player of the Year at this early stage of the season.
This week sees the Richmond take on fellow strugglers Adelaide. Both sides have yet to register a victory in 2010, so it will be interesting to see how the young Tigers handle the more mature Crows in South Australia. The Tigers have a number of important players back in the side for this match, with Cotchin, Martin and Tambling returning from injury.
Carn' the Tiges!
