ANZAC Day saw the Tigers travel west to face the high flying Fremantle in a match that few, if any, saw a real chance for a Richmond victory. Despite the naysayers, the young Tiger squad came out firing, catching the Dockers on their heels and converted truly to take a solid lead of 26 points into quarter time. This seemed to spur the Dockers into action and although Freo were very wasteful in front of goal the 10 scoring shots in the quarter by Freo to Richmond's 3 behinds suggested that the Tigers' slim half time lead may be under threat.
As it turns out this prediction was accurate and Freo ran away with the second half, with big Sandilands maintaining his ruck dominance and the Dockers finally managing to kick truly, aided by some ill discipline from McGuane and Riewoldt in response to obvious baiting from the new pest on the block, Ballantyne. In the end, Richmond's young side and their inconsistency cost the Tigers any chance of victory. After kicking 6 goals in the first quarter the Tigers struggled to find forward options and mainly converted from frees inside 50 to record only a further 5 goals for the match. The game was further marred by injuries to Richard Tambling, who appeared to twinge his hammy late in his 100th game and an ominous looking knee injury to young Troy Taylor. Fortunately, scans have revealed that Taylor's injury is not as serious as it initially appeared.
In the voting this week we saw a rare tie for the win, with both Nathan Foley and Robin Nahas impressing the members of Punt Road End. Foley made an impressive return from a prolonged injury break and appeared to step right back into the pace of the game. Axel was able to find the ball at will and clear the ball from the contest. He is an important part of our midfield structure and such a promising return bodes well for the Tigers as the season progresses. Nahas seemed to return from exile in the VFL with a point to prove. His work ethic, improved defensive pressure and goal kicking were all prominent as he aims to cement his place in the side after a disappointing start to 2010. Brett Deledio also featured prominently in the voting as his work off half back really highlighted his creativity and skill by foot. This week also saw quite a few debutantes in the 2010 polls, with the two round 5 winners, Foley and Nahas garnering their first votes being joined by Rance and Collins on the leaderboard.
This week sees the Tigers head off to the Cattery to face the reigning premiers. After serving my duties at my son's school fair, I intend to drive over to watch the Tigers perform. Living outside of Geelong and having plenty of Cats supporters as mates, the chance to see a major upset is always worthwhile. This, coupled with the suburban ground feel of standing in the Terraces at Skilled Stadium makes this a must see fixture every year.
