Ben Cousins handed one-year prison sentence for aggravated stalking, drug possession

By Courtney Bembridge

Former Brownlow medallist Ben Cousins has been jailed for a year for aggravated stalking, drug and driving offences.

Cousins, 38, has already spent more than a month behind bars after being arrested in February at a home in the southern Perth suburb of Melville.

He was charged with 11 offences, including breaching an RVO and the aggravated stalking of his former partner and the mother of his children, and was later refused bail in court.

Cousins' lawyer had asked for his sentence to be suspended so he could attend an intensive community-based rehabilitation program, but the magistrate refused the request.

He was handed a 12-month prison term and will eligible for parole after six months.

Cousins was also fined a total of $2,400 for possessing eight grams of methylamphetamine and a smoking implement and for driving without a licence, after being deemed unfit to drive under the mental health act.

The sentence caps a remarkable fall from grace for the former AFL star, who won the game's highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, in 2005 before helping to lead the West Coast Eagles to the 2006 premiership.

More to come.

Ben Cousins is the modern day Poster Child for youth on how associating with the wrong types can lead one down a path of self destruction.

Had he managed to stay clean he had the world at his feet good looking fella gun player a media career was his for the taking however the element got their hooks in him and his cohorts.

Exhibit A - the failed idol brought down just as easy as the layman.

One must ask the question regarding the WCE environment in this period.

Had Benny been drafted to the Cats or the Hawks or the Swans is it feasible to summise that this tragedy for him may not actually have occurred.

Methamphetamine is a one way track to the garbage dump.

Just another deatbeat junkie ignoring an AVO.

I agree. Kick him to the curb in my opinion. Everybody is feeling sorry for him but he has carved his own path to destruction. His behavior should not be condoned, excused, dismissed or forgiven easily..

Time for some hard truths and no special favours.

Well all I can say is this might be the best thing for him, and it's not just the drug taking, it's the stalking and harassment. Hopefully this time he has some incentive to get clean.

He is an addict but he has received plenty of assistance and would have been provided with the tools to treat his addiction.

Terry Wallace self-indulgence in drafting him was actually counter-productive to any recovery. It enabled him to continue using.

Hopefully cousins ego will be deflated enough to allow him to actually hear the advice he would be getting. He does have choices.

I've heard the complete opposite and that comes from his family who have thanked Richmond for temporarily bringing their son back.

It just postponed the inevitable. He still had severe issues whilst at Richmond. Remember a particular rushed hospital visit? I don't believe his time at Richmond was productive for him at all and it certainly didn't do anything for the Tigers (contrary to what was being said at the time). It was this environment originally that contributed to his habit. If you read his book it becomes pretty clear to me that his traits were not going to be aided by remaining in football. It's an illness and a very sad progression for a super talented footballer.
