Let's take an example. Andrew Collins gets knocked out. On the bench, Cuz tells him to "shake it off and make a name for yourself". Collo kicks 2 goals, including the matchwinner. He praises Cousins in interviews in the days afterwards.

That's interesting.
I'm assuming Benny hasn't asked Collo to make a name for himself the past couple of weeks because he hasn't played all that well.
Unfortunately we won't get the interview to ask him. :spin

IMO Collins gets 99.99% of the credit for that effort to come back on field and kick those goals against Sydney.
Folks will get all sorts of advice but ultimately that sort of toughness comes from the inside.
Some have it, some don't. Collins did fortunately on that occasion.

Dustin Martin has had that internal toughness from day 1.
He has the belief that comes from the inside and is looking to make his own destiny despite any advice.
Hopefully one day he'll be as good a player as Benny was who also largely carved his own way due to his talent and champion qualities.

To say or imply that he should have had a impact on those players is rubbish Tooheys.

How about Thomson then Scoop?

I don't believe it is rubbish.
Some here genuinely think that everything Ben touches turns to gold and that's largely enough reason to keep him for another year.
I'm challenging the legitimacy that notion.
I think he has provided some useful knowledge to players but don't think it'll matter anywhere near as much as some suggest if he's not there to provide it.

The likes of Cotchin & Martin were always talented. Cousins or no Cousins.
and the likes of Tambling and Morton have their flaws. Cousins or no Cousins.

The advice Ben offers might sometimes help make a small difference but it's entirely unquantifiable and IMO overstated.
Our quality of young player has gotten better over the past few drafts. That's what's making the real difference.

In my opinion.

does anyone think that, at the age of 32, cuz's form, (and form alone) is good enough for him to go around again?

Hard one. On current form you'd reckon he probably can but you cant just look at current form. This time next year he will be 33. The game isn't getting any slower and older bodies don't recover any quicker, especially playing the position Cousins does. You'd hope if he goes again that he doesn't sustain an injury as they do take longer to heal. Missed 7 games last year, will have missed at least 5 this year, and would expect he wouldn't be asked (or be able) to play every game next year.

Took him 4 years to show that kind of determination ;)

I'm not necessarily saying Cuz deserves credit for that example, in fact it's probably a petty example. It's more about the constant expectations a champion player and a professional trainer places on those around him that shifts attitudes and daily habits over time. Working in any environment with a highly motivated individual with lots of experience and a history of success increases productivity. In the business world this attitude component to hiring employees is highly valued as it's well known that standards set among peers has a big impact on the company's productivity as a whole. The right people can create a hard working, positive culture in an organisation, and it's the seniors who set these behavioural standards. Damien Hardwick is focusing on creating "winning behaviours", and if Cousins wasn't a leading example of creating this in the group, he wouldnt even be talking about offering a contract to someone who will be 33 next year.

The very fact it is such a tough decision is evidence of the qualities Ben brings to the table. He's 33 next year, why else are we even be considering him? To play finals?

Just putting 22 kids on the ground isn't enough for them to become good players.

21 kids and 1 respected hard worker would be more beneficial for the 21 blokes who are actually playing.

Or is the education of that 1 extra bloke more important than the education of these 21 blokes?

So will he get another year because Dimma is over estimating the list and wants to play finals? Or maybe Ben is helping Dimma create a winning culture and the coach wants him around the club because he is helping create a culture shift that helps us win a flag? Whatever our opinions are, Ben can't help demonstrate these "winning behaviours" if he's on the sidelines with a broken body, hence a strong end to the season is important.

According to the Sun today it all depends wether the AFL decides to limit the number of interchanges per game.
If Andy Dimwitriou limits the number of interchanges its over for Cuz.

If they do limit the interchanges, then I do think it is best the club moves him on.

Personally, limiting the number of interchanges would be another rule change to cover for another silly rule change.

So Ben Cousins will get a contract for when he is 33 years old unless a rule change which would prevent him from having an impact on the field takes place?

Surely people have to accept his tremendous leadership qualities now.

Why else are we even giving it such strong consideration?

God help us if thats how we make our decisions

Don't think we will.
That article was the journos spin on it. Nothing Hardwick said suggested Cousins career specifically depended on that rule.

Actually, there was an interview, either the one with Hird or around that time where Hardwick said that a interchange limit could in fact determine whether Cousins plays on for the RFC next year.

'Could' Balooga. I think he's also said that that there will be a number of factors to weigh up in making that decision, not specifically just this one.

He also said that the speed that the game is at currently could also restrict the length of players careers.
