Re: Cousins: The poll. Do you want the Tigers to draft Ben Cousins?

Of course it's a possibility NY but if Ben wants it enough, and has the support around him, hopefully he'll be able to resist temptation. It sounds like he'll be subject to some pretty strict testing before he's able to apply to play AFL again. I don't presume to know what's best or not for Ben when I don't know the person or the facts of his situation and only feel the way I do by questioning what I'd wish for if it was my child who was fighting addiction.

Re: Cousins: The poll. Do you want the Tigers to draft Ben Cousins?

I'm not sure what the answer is either. From what little i know boredom can lead to relapses.

I just question whether taking (probably) the only thing he was good at away from him is the correct decision. I read that he could play in the WAFL or VFL, but frankly he's too good for those leagues, I will leave that to better qualified people

I hope the AFL had a talk with those people. I'm sure they did.

Against the argument of taking Cousins away from football is a more pressing one which crackertiger mentioned.

Any future decision on Cousins from any club should be made based on who he has continued to associate with!

I can tell you that this is a big problem, but many clubs may not know it!

Richmond should stay well away from cousins.

It may or may not be good for him to be completely away from footy - perhaps he could even come to enjoy the game through a lower level, I don't know the answer to that one.

On the other hand, the level at which he was playing did not help his cause. I'm not claiming that AFL was behind the reason he became addicted (I believe that addiction is more a part of a person's make-up) but I suggest that playing at such an elite level did not help him handle his addiction.

From the experience of having a very close family member with an addiction plus losing my best friend several years ago, I do think there is a lot in what cracker stated - the wrong sort of acquaintances can be disastrous.

What is he going to do then in life after football? Its only 1 year, and if he cannot handle a little quiet time now, he is stuffed when he hangs up the boots.

Rose - you're not worried that someone rich, with a lot of free time on his hands won't be tempted?

Footballers who are still playing the game are rich and have a lot of free time on their hands.
That's part of the reason there is an increasing illegal drug culture permeating through the AFL and other codes.

Cuz's a an admitted drug addict and given the substances he's been reportedly dabbling in, he'll always likely be tempted whatever he's doing.

That's why he needs to now make his health his focus and not his football.

He was returned to the AFL and had a relapse. I've heard addicts state that he needs a complete break from the AFL environment.

One thing that actually staggers me is the selfishness in people who want one person in Cousins to 'get better' at the expense of Richmond winning more football matches, thus denying thousands of more enjoyment.

I’m staggered you managed to work out the ‘italics’ function.

JB thought Anthony Koutafides was "italic".

Cuz is suspended for 12 months for ruining the reputation of the AFL and Andy Dimwitwho.
What about Dildak when is he going up before the Commission?

I doubt that any statistics would show that footballers or players of other codes have a higher incidence of drug abuse than the rest of society. Drugs are an issue of society and you will find drug addicts of all persuasions regardless of their wealth and free time. It's more about the people you get involved with and how you handle yourself. In fact I would suspect that today's young footballers would be less prone to mixing with the wrong crowds due to the professionalism required in today's game if you want to succeed.

I would also suspect that any proper implementation of a drug testing policy would highlight players who previously would not have been detected, thus the reason maybe it appears that drug usage is increasing.

Fair post.

Weagles excluded obviously.

Typically, Cousins is able to avoid any action taken by any democratic law enforcing public body but when it comes to the nazi regime pedalled by Adolf Demetriou, Cousins gets not only charged but tried and found guilty by the same body, and with what jurisdiction?

And then mike fitzpatrick states he not sure if cousins (saga) did any damage to the afl? I find this comment remarkable. So what actually were the reasons he was brought before the commission, not the actual charges but what constituted them?
Anyway over and done with, I just hope Ben makes a full recovery and gets some happiness in his life

I think the fact that Cousins has taken this on the chin without fighting it as well as admitting his addiction publicly, suggests that there has been plenty going on.
Perhaps not to the extent reported as he said himself in the statement but plenty just the same.

I can also understand why all of the information surrounding this charge hasn't become public knowledge and it's not just to protect the AFL but also likely any remaining credibility Cousins has himself.
I actually respect the AFLs stance on that.

Agree that it's time to move on.
