Can’t see the Aussies winning this. Usually a wicket falls pretty early on the next day after an overnight partnership. That would leave us 5 fa and the terribly underperforming Carey at the crease. Strangely when our top order fails the lower order tends to show more resolve so maybe a couple of good scores from them but probably not enough.
Gee, you picked that in one.
Head, poor shot.

Head needs to start respecting the game again. He'd get a game for the Poms with that sort of effort. Terrible dismissal.

it's OK to be attacking but you need to have a certain level of respect for the game and your opposition. He ain't good enough to keep throwing the bat at everything outside off stump.

Aust with nothing but question marks on their batting lineup.

Kiwi's bowling attack is pretty thin, 3 front liners, one in his first test.
Kuggelijn not fit, and a couple of part time spinners.
Patience, and common sense batting should wear them down.

Older champion , reflexes slowing , let’s move him up the order to open . Even our best batsman in the last decade can’t be expected to make that “ Hail Mary “ work
Woeful idea
The thing is, Smith has always been scratchy when he first comes to the crease and that's usually when the new ball is doing less.

I reckon our side has a huge attitude problem as a whole. Very self destructive.

You called it. Head just threw it away with a terrible shot. Marsh did the same but was dropped.

Head - if he’s lucky - will end up with a high 30s low 40s average. He’s a matchwinner but there will be many failures. Not unlike Mark Waugh and Kim Hughes.

That was a terrible decision by umpire. If that was just knicking the stumps would have been tragic for carey,

Good to see Head finally getting some scrutiny on here.

In horrible form and tailing off when he's at an age he should be stepping up and leading the batting lineup.

He's doing the opposite and should be dropped if we had the replacements to bring in.

Needs to tighten up his game big time.

Carey is no Tim Paine and we've gone backwards in that role but he needs to step up here.

Yeh, that dismissal was his worst ever. Just woeful. An innocuous 2nd ball warm-up from Southee. The pitch is fine, not too difficult to bat on. You just need a bit of grit, Head yet to show he really has it. Disappointing.

Fortunately for Head there are a couple in front of him in the exit row. Marnus being number 1.

No tests now for 8 months? Assume many will play county cricket, can you change a side based on county form?

Yeh, he's been disappointing with the bat. He's definitely not the best keeper in the country so needs to start producing runs.

Nah they won't take county form into much consideration. Not much anyway.

A lot of the guys will go IPl and 20 over world cup anyway.

Head should be being groomed as our next test captain. Unfortunately his game hasn't developed enough to be a lock in the team now.

A very entertaining 20 overs of cricket this morning, 97 runs from 18 over for the loss of one wicket.

I'd like to see Marnus go down the order. He isn't a test 3 IMO. There is no real 'B' game to his batting. When he tries to grind, it is only a matter of time before he gets out.

Our problem is though, who do we bat at 3? I just don't see anyone to go into the role. Smith would be the obvious choice, but looks badly out of form, and maybe out of time.

Head's batting is similar to Marnus, very one paced. But Head is making starts, just not going on with it. His game needs to mature (reminds me a bit of a young David Warner, perish the thought) but Head not a huge problem just yet compared to our opening and No.3 roles.
