2022 Draft Thread

If we are getting Hopper and Taranto forget holding on to 12. Maybe we keep 30.

12,19 next years first and second.
That will make it very difficult to get a key position forward heading into the future, I think we're putting all our eggs into the midfielder basket which is risky from a supply side perspective. Free agency won't save us this time around, Lynch deals are rare & you are competing with 17 other clubs. Fremantle have spent copious amounts trying to fill this void and the jury is still out with their current personnel.

Really makes you ask yourself why we went so hard for HBFs and Wings in the last draft.
Another contested mid to develop alongside Sonsie would have made more sense on a needs basis.
Then there’s our lack of developing power forwards.
They either see Bauer as the solution or perhaps have a rabbit up their sleeves

I guess there's always third time lucky, both Corey Ellis and Ben (John) Lennon were pick 12's. So do we keep, or trade pick 12, If I can whisper some words of wisdom, we should Let it be, Let it be...........gone

I don't necessarily like lumping those two together but all the lessons have duly been taken onboard. We had an excellent record with perusing the field after lengthy stints training with the squad, Grimes a perfect illustration of due diligence at its best. I won't knock the club for the Lennon pick, even despite the fact his athletic testing looked on the nose. When you look at Cripps testing you would have had trouble separating them on purely athletic grounds. Corey Ellis on the other hand didn't have the contested game, nor did he have the speed, it was an absolute head scratcher which typified Jackson's recruiting lean spell. As for the merits in holding pick 12 this year, I think if Cadman is overlooked by the Kangas then he may slide but if he doesn't, there's Keeler & Jefferson to consider. The odds of landing a big talent after the first 15 is remote, generally doesn't happen so you are then left with half glass empty types like Hogan, Lobb, Ben Brown etc. The more I look at Keeler in particular, the more confident I'm becoming that he's a strong selection, and you can also add Chol to the list of players who grew 2-3cm after being drafted.

I suspect we will get a bit creative with picks this year and we will look for players that have slipped.

Lets say Taranto / Hopper cost us 12, our future 1st and 19, leaving us with 30 only for this year. I wonder if we ask for 57 and 59 back as GWS won't use them.

RCD and Dow will not get a game next year with the depth we would have in the midfield and would suit a club with an aging midfield that needs rejuvenating, I'm thinkg West Coast. So West Coast trade in RCD, Dow and 30 and trade out Rioli and 38. Port get Rioli and trade their future 3rd and 52 to us. We get 39, 52, Ports future 3rd and give up RCD, Dow and 30. Good deal for Port and us, maybe need to grease slightly for West Coast, essentially 30 for Rioli and 38 for RCD / Dow.

Those trades would leave us with 38, 52, 57 and 59 and a future 3rd from Port. We could probably look to trade those 3 50's picks with Brisbane for points. Trade those 3 for 43 and 67, gives us a higher pick and Brisbane can about 160 points (67 will end up coming in a lot once they use the picks for Ashcroft and Fletcher).

Leaves us with 38, 44 and 67 in this draft. I'd be taking Lemmey with one of those picks. His upside is huge, and we should take a gamble that he can get back to his best, a pure risk / reward trade. A high pick, probably not, but 1 in the 40's, yes please.

All hypotheticals, but we would have.

In - Taranto, Hopper, 38, 44, 67, future 3rd (Port)
Out - RCD, Dow, future 1st

Reckon that gives us some good flexibility to still pick up a few that drop. We seem to do quite well around that 40 pick area with picks anyway, and 67 will end up in the 50's I suspect.

I think pick 12 is still in the sweet spot but then again, if you don't rate Clark then I can sort of see where you're coming from, Cameron McKenzie looks the goods to me, then there's the key position prospects in Cadman, Jefferson & Keeler. History tells you there will be a bust but let's not forget Jack fell into this range, Curnow was another who slipped. I feel pretty strongly about keeping pick 12, there's enough talent on the board to make it a viable selection. Pick 19 is worth offloading, that would be my currency & perhaps some future picks.

I rate mckenzie highly

But if we get hopper and taranto,

We could draft mark neeld and craig ednie with our picks,

And still be lightyears ahead of the pack

Each year, i have a fistpump player i celebrate like its 1999 if we get them.

JR was one. Shai was one.

Havnt settled on my fistpumper this year

Wouldn't bother to waste time speculating on which kids we might draft this year, until we're done with trading. If as indicated in the meedjia we're chasing hard after Tarantino n Grasshopper, we might not have much of anything bar very late or rookie picks available to us this year.
Once the trade window shuts we'll know exactly what picks we've got left to play with n speculation becomes more relevant.

Fair point, I usually enjoy all the discussion on the draft thread but if those trades come off it is very likely we will have pretty slim pickings for a couple of years but I guess we can't have everything.

ESPN has Oliver Hollands @ 13, which is our pick.

The two I like Busslinger & Mackenzie are at 8 & 9, with Isaac Keeler at 20.

Reckon Cowan is very rough around the edge esp kicking. Not really a fan.
He's OK, HBF, easy street. But B&F? In past years I used to be amazed so many individual award winners got drafted late or not at all, having watched juniors more closely this year I understand it.

I reckon Mccallum is a player we should be looking at for a later second/third rounder ,strong over head ,very very quick, and seems very composed ,could make a grimes replacement ,or a wing.

Tom McCallum

Defender, TAS

Age: 15/05/2004
Weight: 78kg
Height: 193cm
Club: Allies/Tasmania Devils/Clarence
2022 NAB League U18s 81 ranking points, 15.4 disposals, 7.6 intercept possessions, 3.3 intercept marks 2022 National Champs 87 ranking points, 16.8 disposals, 7.3 intercepts, 3.8 intercept marks
McCallum’s standing grew significantly at the national championships, starting the carnival out of the side before a late call-up and finishing it as one of the premier interceptors. The Clarence prospect ranked second for intercept marks (3.8 per game) and equal second for intercepts (7.3), named among the best in all four of the Allies’ matches. McCallum has great hands overhead, reads the play well and possesses elite speed and endurance, giving him the versatility to match up on an array of opponents at 193cm. The defender was among the three Tasmanians to receive a national combine invite off the back of his impressive campaign for the Allies.

I reckon Phoenix foster is one we will look at as a kp forward, his stats are comparable to Keeler in the SANFL,and he's a better mark ,and kicked more goals in less games played ,as well as pinch hitting in the Ruck.

He’s probably better but like Cowan, there’s a knock on his kicking.

I know his old man. He was a solid player, hard at it, but a pretty ordinary kick himself.

It isn't that bad ,l would love to know how many player's in each year's draft, have knocks on their kicking .
