Something is wrong with Woolworths supermarkets. Safeway over Coles was a lifetime habit unless Safeway was closed, entrenched after losing an expensive 4l bottle of orange juice due to a weak Coles plastic bag. Response from Coles amounted to "bad luck".

Then the local Coles started opening until midnight, while the Safeway round the back closed at 10 and required more effort to get to. Slowly over time I was converted.

Tonight I shopped at Woolworths for the first time in ~18 months. Now it's they who have the crappy bags, crappy self-service terminals, low/no stock on shelves and staff who generally seem not to give a *smile*.

RIP Safeway/Woolworths.

Both are a-holes as far as I'm concerned. All *smile* low prices are offset elsewhere. The only part that Coles wins for me are exactly what you said about Woolies/Safeway....crap self-serve terminals.

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

As a northie I go to la manna direct meself

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

The Coles I went to last night had virtually no fruit or veg in in! And how these supermarkets bang on about "fresh food" yet serve up fruit that is always dry, tasteless and awful I don't know!

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

If I was the Marketing Manager at IGA I would promote...............
No self serve terminals
Greater variety - NO HOME BRANDS
Donate money to your chosen sport/charity.

But I'm not and IGA just fumble along despite having a vastly superior choice of brands/products.

The Coles up here also has self-service terminals.

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

I do not like either Coles or Woolworths - the way they treat their competitors - first it was butchers (which I worked with in the 90's), then the bakeries (which have reinvented themselves and pushed back), then the petrol stations and it hasn't stopped their.

This appalling behaviour is now directed to their local suppliers and I have seen it with local manufacturers. Both the big supermarket chains are desperate to have local food producers represented in their stores but treat them like absolute sh!t.

How would you like to enter a contract with either of them and sell them some of your products at a reduced price (they are masters at negotiating down your price) to then receive a legally written letter which says that they decided to sell your product in a sale at a further reduced price and then demand you pay them the difference between the sale price and the price you originally agreed to sell it to them. This is what they are doing at the moment to many local producers and then wonder why everyone is getting upset.

I don't care how much extra effort it takes, my wife and I refuse to shop at any of their outlets or save up to a maximum $2 to buy petrol from their outlets.

Me too they have more personality than the check-out staff, they're happy souls who really love their job. ;)

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

agree with year of the tiger in that they're both a disgrace in the way they treat their suppliers and the unscrupulous methods they use to strangle their competitors. not to mention how they screw regular aussies by cornering the fuel market (which should be illegal).

but if i were to chose between the 2 of them, i go with woolies every day of the week because i find their meat of far better quality.

Meat is better quality than both here:

This.

Does any other country in the world have such a powerful supermarket duopoly?

Tesco and Dunnes Stores in Ireland? Easily the biggest and with massive superstores and in numbers that make no sense in such a small country with a small population. Although the rough times have converted a large portion to the cheaper Germans, Lidl and Aldi.

I can't tell you how frustrating it is not to be able to buy locally grown produce. You cannot buy, anywhere in Dublin, a spring onion grown in Ireland. Seriously, how hard is it to grow *smile* spring onions? All the ones in the shops have to tops cut off and elastic bands around them to disguise how old and wilted they are. The subterfuge really pisses me off!

Some solid predictive work there Lee.

Re: Woolworths is sh!t

I love self service terminals for a small number of items. No waiting for idiot checkout people or idiots with 40 items in the express lanes.

OP needs to shop around.

I have six supermarkets within walking distance, 3 Woollies, 2 Coles & 1 Aldi. Went to Aldi once, the worst of the lot for range. It's not like buying a car or even a TV. Coles does the job.
