Why are we so poor at Docklands?

This is my take on it...may be complete rubbish but anyway: The ground has a roof = no wind and no rain. Perfect conditions to execute clean disposal and take contested marks. Pretty football. Dogs and now North out skilled us. Richmond are no good at pretty football because we don’t have many skilled disposers of the footy. We much prefer a scrappy game, toe pokes, knock ons and pressure and messy football with endurance (Lambert, Ellis, Houli, MacIntosh, Broad, Prestia...etc) being more important than silk (maybe Edwards, sometimes Martin). This game style suits the MCG in winter and at night. 2017 was build on tackle pressure not silky clean disposal. Funnily enough the newbies (Stack and Baker especially) are showing the established players up with their skilled disposal. No more indoor football games must be our request regarding future fixtures.

Re the previous post, you have really raised some interesting and pertinent points imo. Could be a lot of merit in your points. The other thing against us is that unfortunately Footscray and NM have been real bogey teams for the RFC for the last several years.

We certainly seem to be crap at that dump.

Looking at both the Footscray game and tonight I think we need a taller side there. So many forward marks for the opposition tells me we need a taller backline at Docklands (I think we need a taller backline anyway but moreso there).

Down back we had Garth, Astbury, Grimes and Broad. all 192cm plus. you could argue we would be better with a 198cm defender in Garth's place, but not many have them.

We also had Soldo, Balta and Lynch. Looking at TOG for those 3 we should have had 2 tall forwards for about half the game.

structure wise we matched up well with North. We just sucked on the night.

We rely on speed. There is less room to use it on smaller grounds.

We are weak overhead, especially in defence. Our defenders are closing speed defenders, not wrestling defenders. As a general rule, most teams don’t like to kick the ball on their forwards’ heads, but they are learning to make an exception when they play us.

We play better in the rain and wet conditions because it negates the strength of high marking forwards and defenders. They shut the roof there.

I suggest we play for a very wet July, August and September. We will light it up on a wet MCG.

Also, we get spooked any time we have to play in front of a crowd that is less than 30,000. When our guys see too much empty space in the stands they start to wonder if it was worth getting out of bed that morning.

What is happening here? Where are all the people? If you are playing at a North Melbourne home game, can anyone hear you scream?

On the other hand, because the Tiger Army is not around to make them feel bad, the Umpires give them a few free kicks for a change.

That’s gotta be a good thing.

But we do get disoriented at a ground that doesn’t have a Punt Road End so it evens out the free kick advantage.

It’s not really a free kick advantage as such. It is just not a disadvantage, which is the normal state. Have we actually won the free kick count any time in this millennium?

Think this is it. We like open spaces. We don't play the SCG that well either.

Because the ball doesn’t spend as much time on the ground... it’s easier to mark the ball and we keep picking very small teams. We make no adjustment at all.
I subscribe to this. The small forward setup is less effective on a ground where marking is easier.

Indoor football is not football. They should leave the roof open, or just burn that stadium down.

Burn it down, and make sure the AFL hierarchy are there while it happens.

I think there's merit in this. For a team used to playing in front of 70-80k people on a ground charged with atmosphere; to be under a roof in a sterile environment must affect the psyche. I know from a supporters perspective, I can't get as excited at Docklands as I do at the MCG.

Conversely, what's North and the Dogs record like at the 'G?
