Dependable defender Mark Chaffey and promising young forward Kayne Pettifer are set to return to the Richmond side for next Sunday's big Round 2 clash with the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome.

Chaffey and Pettifer missed the Tigers' opening round loss to Collingwood at the MCG last Friday night due to suspension. Both played for the Coburg Tigers in a practice match against Williamstown last Saturday.

"Obviously Chaffey would be pretty much a certainty to be selected," said Richmond's Football Manager Greg Hutchison.

"Kayne Pettifer's form pre-season had been pretty good and while he wasn't great in the VFL last weekend, he'll still put himself into serious consideration."

Chaffey, 25, has played 102 games for Richmond since joining the Club from Caulfield Grammar in 1997. He has developed into one of the Tigers' most consistent performers over the past three years, providing the team with good run and creativity out of the backline and through the midfield.

Pettifer, 21, has played 17 games with the Yellow and Blacks since making his senior debut in 2001 and kicked 15 goals.

He is highly regarded by the Tiger hierarchy as a youngster capable of being a reliable goalkicker for the side, and easing the burden on star forward Matthew Richardson.

Meanwhile, Richmond's two pick-ups from rival league clubs in last year's AFL National Draft - Tim Fleming (Carlton) and Billy Nicholls (Hawthorn) - appear likely to line up for the Coburg Tigers in this Saturday's VFL season-opener against Werribee at Proton Oval.

Fleming, who was taken at selection No. 41 in the Draft, has recovered from a broken wrist sustained in the pre-season and is extremely keen to press his senior claims in the coming weeks.

Nicholls, who was Richmond's third pick (No. 47 overall) in the Draft, resumed with the Coburg Tigers last Saturday following an interrupted pre-season because of injury and was impressive.

"Billy played pretty well in the first three quarters of the Coburg game on the weekend, but unfortunately got a bit of a 'corky' as well," Hutchison said.

"He should be right to play this week, but whether or not he's considered for senior selection, I'm not sure."

Kayne must have been extremely ordinary last week for the club to admit to that.

It wasn't only my view, but pretty common on the boards that him being named in the best for Richmond against Carlton a couple of weeks ago was a joke.

Kayne was selected without really warranting the spot for most of last season.
When he went back to Coburg he hardly had a crack at all.

Unless he is ready to make an impact in the senior team I hope they leave him at Coburg until his form justifies a senior berth.
I'm sure it would be for his benefit.

I've never seen a player get so much praise and support for doing so little.

Time to live up to the reputation. I know I'm against the grain with a lot of people here, but to me reputation isn't worth a pinch of ?, I'd prefer to see action on the field.

Pay back the faith everyone shows in you Kayne, not for 5 minutes or 1 game, but consistantly.

He was ordinary last week for Coburg Rosy. His "dummy spits" are getting tiresome to say the least.
And it is time for him to repay some of the faith people have shown in him. I agree he needs to remain at Coburg until he proves he is a team player rather
than a strutting around like some sort of peacock (ala Brereton - now there's a blast from the past ;D)

The other thing the Club neglected to mention is that with the VFL season starting proper - our 3 rookies
have a huge chance to show their worth. We have the option of promoting one of them to the senior list
with OTTO on the long term injury list. So let's go Moore, Pickering and MATT SHIR and show us what you've got!

And from what I saw last week - Matt Shir has got alot of qualities that we need in the Seniors..

(Please Note: The author of this post has distanced herself from being Patron of the Matt Shir Fan Club and comments relating to Matt are totally unbiased ;D ;D ;D

I was only half serious about this. Anyway I seem to recall a certain first gamer for Collingwood last week doing a rather servicable job on Richo.
I don't know about that if Richo had kicked goals instead of points... Would you be saying he did a servicable job on Richo, if Richo had kicked 6.1?

Yeah agree TG - Richo took him on a dozen laps of the bathroom, but just failed to give him a bath. Pretty important thing to miss out on though.

I say keep Hyde in the team and give him more of a free role. I would like to see rogers, king, houlihan, and even cameron dropped b4 hyde as these players are not IMO for the best interest of the future of the RFC.

Won't be too long b4 shir cements his place on the senior list and the senior team.

KL Nothing personal here, but people can say what they like about BRERETON, but he was great footballer who had abilitly and toughness that I would love to see at Tigeland. All we need to do is take look at his performance in that Grand Final against Geelong after Mark YEATES lined him up.

Not to many could have produced a perfomance like that after the hit he took.

Like him or lump him he was a class act on the football field who took as much as he gave

Agreed Gustiger,

If Kayne was 1/3 as good a footballer as Dermott - I'd be rapped. I was just referring to the strutting around (which with Dermott I found a pain) not the football ability. Actually if Kayne tried to be a little more "Breretonish" in his approach rather than what he is showing at the moment - I'd even tolerate his strutting, dummy spits and ego

should be only changes to the side.

IN:
chaffey-thank god.
*smile*-exploit the doggies weakness further now that grant has gone down[sadly].

OUT:
king-long season ahead for king cant see him getting back in in the near future.
hyde-he,s simply not up to it.

id keep vardy in the side for the very reason shultz came into the side.

Being a Sunday game, tonight we will just name a 25 man squad

I'd say it will be the same team from last week, with Chaffey, Pettifer and Schulz added.

The 7 man bench will be :

Hyde, Pettifer, Schulz, Newman, Houlihan, Vardy, King
