What gets these 2 over?

Their cap is bust. In the same situation Collingwood traded Treloar for a future second-rounder. And we won't even ask them to pony up $300k a year for the privilege.
Yeah I know but they will still want to extract fair value; especially for Hopper who is under contract. They know their financial commitment to him next year and could well decide to keep him and take their chances with FA next year. 3 first round picks, all of which will be in the teens, is fair value for 2 players of this quality. If we had a pick in the top 10 that would change things but we are most likely not going to have that.

We have committed to these guys and they to us. We will pay the price even if it is considered overs. Giants may be in a salary cap bind but they will still have a price that they consider is fair. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out.

I'd be hanging onto Soldo to be honest.

Nank is injury prone and the RFC needs a competent second ruck.

Soldo will be in better nick physically after another pre season and I'm tipping he will return to his 19 and 20 output.

Ryan aint ready yet.

Id rather trade RCD or Hugo or Dow even 2 of the 3.
Thought Miller looked pretty good as the back up in our last two.

If they hold onto Hopper, then a deal like ours would garner them an automatic top 10 first round pick in 2023 under FA compensation you’d expect. The AFL will look after them.

Yep you wouldn't think they'd play finals next year and FA compensation would be Tier 1, immediately after their first pick which will be in the top 10.

Twenty Nine year old Deledio cost GWS a first and third round selection.....just saying.

The difference here is Collingwood were shipping out Treloar and he was reluctant to go whereas we've chased Hopper and Taranto and they want to come.
But there is no difference in that both clubs have to get the player off their books.

How can they keep him? Their salary cap is busted. Like $1-$1.5m busted. They have no hand.

Treloar went for a future second-round pick, with Collingwood also paying $300k of his salary for the next five years. We won't screw them that hard. If we get them pick 13 for Hopper we've done plenty.

They can't afford too keep Hopper even with tarantos departure.Thats the issue.
Reality for them is they can huff n puff about whats Hopper worth as a FA but they won't get that oppotunity too play that card.
We'll play fair but won't be bentover either.

It depends how much he's actually being paid. Reports were that Geelong were offering $550k. I doubt Hopper is getting as much as Taranto so maybe $600-$650k for 7 years. Amon will be on $650k for 5 years and won't be getting Tier 1. I'd say its more likely they get Tier 2 (end of 1st round) if they hold onto him for a year.

Do you know they might not look to move somebody else instead ? Nobody knows that for sure, especially with a new coach coming in. Also, what exactly is their salary dump requirement ? Nobody knows the exact figure of that either.

$650K per year over 5 years for that softo Amon?? Fair dinkum Hawks..................

But you are probably right. If that doesn't trigger Tier 1 then it is likely Hopper's won't either. Also, the Amon compo for Port is gonna push our (current) pick 19 back.

You’re forgetting 2 things: the FA compo is arbitrary - the AFL applies a secret assessment that gets every club’s back up. Refer B Ellis compo. Also, it’s Richmond that’s involved here.

Gil: Dave, don’t let Hopper go to Richmond this year. Hold onto him. We’ll guarantee tier 1 top 10 compo next year if he still wants to go which is more than you’ll get from those Richmond guys.

Dave: Yeah. Ok. We’ll look to move the deck chairs then.

Probably unlikely, probably get a deal done anyway, but you can back it in the AFL are all over this with GWS as we speak regardless.

Hopper didn't do it off his own back.He was encouraged to look elsewhere. In fact if gws had a choice they'd rather move on Conigilio but his contract is way to much for others to consider.
No one knows exactly how tight they are but if the indication that the difference between our offer and theirs for taranto was 100k per year then you can assume with the departure of Hopper that they're in a world of pain cap wise.
There is even talk of Haynes falling victim as well although that seems to have died down abit.

Yeah but they thought they were close to a flag and Lids would have put them over. They knew they were paying overs for him but thought it justified given how close they were.

No one would do that deal today.

No way Hopper stays now. He was clearly told to look for options elsewhere and they’d facilitate a move for him. You don’t have those public statements made without the club’s backing.

Hopper trade feels like its more secure than Tarantoceratops at the moment.

If they play hardball we should not be bending over knowing gws dont have the option of keeping them.

They only have themselves to blame for their salary cap mess, and while we should play fair we should NOT under any circumstances just take it. This is a very different situation to the Cameron trade as they could have easily just held onto him, and had that card to play. There is no way gws can hold onto hopper and tarranto and we should be using this to our advantedge in negotiations.

Deals are probably done with a little bit of haggling on later pick swaps in my opinion. Quite unusual for this amount of news on trades this far out

Love hearing the whingeing from opposition supporters.

And we chipped in for his salary to ensure a better pick.
