Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Its a shame about his GF finishing because he easily established himself as our best small forward this year, and became a more reliable shot towards the end of the year. Played an incredible grand final, was unstoppable, he just unlucky not to be able to finish off his great work.

George can do it all, he is an amazing player. The very definition of chaos football!

well its quite clear what George needs to do over the preseason. maybe we can get a goal kicking specialist in?

Read that 5 behinds is the outright 2nd most kicked ever in a grand final by a player. Worst was 7.

didn't David Cloke kick something like 6.7 or 6.8 in 1980?

Cloke kicked 6.4 and Bartlett kicked 7.4

Any parallels between George and Nathan Lyon?

Underrated and unheralded for much of his career.

A body shape that belies his ability and impact.

A few games where the world starts to wake up to his talent and undeniable genius.

Is George the next GOAT?

Pound for pound strongest and most powerful at the club. Does chin ups with 50kg strapped onto him. Would be a nightmare for defenders knowing george is in the vicinity.

I'd still love to see him play three or four games in a row as a wingman. Ease the pressure from the goalkicking and allow him to run free and link up.

We think alike Achilles!

Called for it after the GF for the same reasons you have above.

Reckon he would be a nightmare match up.

Doesn’t everyone on here do chin ups with 50kg strapped to them?
It’s just that ours are called “guts”

The most underrated finals player this year. Both preliminary and grand final games he was in our top 5 best players.

Not just a a small forward. His ability to move up the ground and create something out of nothing through pure pace is unheralded.

I posted earlier that I despise small forwards who are wasteful in front of goals (can't break even with goals and shots). But I didn't dislike George's Grand Final. He broke the lines with his pace and evasion and broke them hard - let's face it he had a good game. A few goals and we would be calling it a great game.

It's a well done from me despite the five points and one out of bounds on the full. I remain hopeful that he can improve that under most severe pressure. Because if he can... RFC ADVANCE

27.28 (49%) for the season. When he gets that accuracy up to 60+% he,ll be elite.

Tim don't look for elite you will be disappointed. Do look for competence - if George can get to average or above average in this stat then he has turned a weakness into a competence which is all you can ask for. Weakness into elite is unrealistic. I got off George's back this year because he worked his way into games regularly and kicked ok - better than the previous year. A small forward unless he is a dead-set champion will always drift into and out of games - that is just life and don't knock them for it. Accuracy in front of goals however, defines them. Can they take the chances at least 50% of the time when the team presents them. Its what I look for in Rioli, Castagna and Bolton. Chasing, tackling and pace is a given. Its the Richmond game plan for a small forward - ask Lloyd, Stengle and Townsend what I mean.

If Georgie had nailed a couple or three, it'd have been a Normie standard game. The beauty of Georgie is simply that no-one knows what he'll do at any given moment of a game.
Kick three or four goals, or three or four points.
Crash packs n take marks or rummage n blitz a spillage.
Lay half a dozen or more tackles or harassment runs throughout the forward arc.
Get up the field then jink left, right, backwards or forwards then drop the ball n start all over again all in the one play.
He's a pure chaos footballer n it'd seriously *smile* with every opposition coach n players head, because he's the complete antithesis to structure n system.

I think if you were the opposition you just have to hope that George doesn't get into the game. Too many others to worry about to target him specifically. But if he does then it will hurt because it means RFC as a whole is up and about.

In retrospect I think George's GF form will worry sides next year. He obviously had an impact with his pace. Sure he didn't finish well but oppo coaches won't assume that will happen all the time. So can George lift himself to increase his activity in games. If so then he becomes a Fantasia style player who has to be specifically marked in games. If that occurs then look out because Rioli, Stack, Bolton etc will be off the hook and will cause pain.

I love George’s tackling. He is the best front on tackler in the AFL, and it is a skill many don’t have. They stick and it is critical to our game plan.

I can live with the erratic kicking at goal. I think his next step is to improve his decision making. He kind of gets a single minded focus and misses opportunities to maybe dish off to other players. Happened in the GF a couple of times when he had shots at goal when there were better options. He gets this right, he is a top shelf player.

L2R2R can you show Castagna stats on goal kicking percentage vs GWS and vs all others? Feel like he has had a mare in front of goals every time we play them. His games vs suns/lions would also be interesting.
