In Broady's first year at the club, 2016, he played two games as a 23-year-old state league recruit. Like many, I thought, why did they bother. This guy's not up to it. But Dyer'ere pointed out what a dominant athlete he was when back in the VFL, so I kept watching. It only took a couple of games the next year and I was sold. And he keeps improving. He's what they used to call a prototype AFL athlete, except there's a production line of 'em now. 6'4", runs like the wind and does it all day. Brave as a Kellaway, hard as a honeymooner. Love Broady.
I love the way we educate our backs. Remember when Grimes and Whatshisface couldn't catch a footy to save their lives? We taught 'em to double fist - two hands to the ball. Oh, you can get two hands to the ball? That means you can mark it. Go on, try. Ever since 2017, Broady's value has been in halving contests, nullifying dangerous situations. If there was a stat for "getting a dangerous ball out of bounds", he'd be a league leader. But now he's expanding. He can run, so he is. He can kick, so he does. He can and does mark it. This bloke is growing. As Grimes has expanded into the Alex Thingumy-sized hole, Broad has realised, "I can be Grimes". And when the time comes, I'll back him to join the logical dots that if you're Grimes, you can be the player Grimes has become. Won't that be something.
