Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

Very good insight. And you can pencil him in to return this week.

It is a very interesting insight.

I wonder why the role is so particularly mentally draining? (I understand playing AFL footy in itself would be mentally and physically draining) Is it frustration because the role makes him statistically look ordinary?

or is it the concentration and discipline required to go against your own footy instincts?

that's kind of what Dimma implied in that they give him a run in the 2's to get some ball and play unencumbered?

thoughts?

Good question Easy. Not sure what would be so mentally draining about specific role on the field. Unless he has to calculate 5 kicks in advance where the ball will end up. Lots of trig and derivatives and probability in that. Do we know how he went in advanced calculus in the combine?

Could also be that as his role doesn't see him get many possessions then he can feel doubts about his ability. Hence the need to refresh his acquaintance with the Sherrin in the two's.

Think it’s a bit of both.
A defensive position that’s about closing down space and pressuring the ball carrier or outlet kicker could be demoralising for a player with the Rioli surname. Imagine telling his Uncle Maurice Snr to guard space!
Low possession would go against a natural footballers instincts. He may see himself as more than that.
KMac and George as an example are ideal for the positional role play. Don’t have to think too much.

Dimma‘s presser today gives a good insight into why D Rioli has 3 premiership medals

This is Dimma's quote from The Age

“He’s a little bit hard to judge. Daniel plays a really specific role that doesn’t require him to get 15 kicks and three goals”
“What it is, it’s very mentally draining for him to play that role week in, week out. Sometimes he needs to go back just to freshen up and find the footy a little bit for his own piece of mind

I certainly get frustrated at times with Rioli's game - but WTF do I know

All of the above.

Leppa was asked about Daniel this morning on SEN ,

he said something like ( not word for word ) he has been a little bit off , he needs to get back to his defensive best ,

no mention of doing anything with the footy ,

its pretty obvious what his role is

Rioli has been dropped in the past couple of years and has come back to collect his medal. it seems to be more to freshen him up to re-focus. he also hasn't dominated in the vfl before his return.

Leppa is talking too much about the Tigers lately.

Interesting if Daniel comes straight back in, (i'd certainly have him ahead of Aarts), or if they sent him back to VFL to either learn a new role? or at least play some midfield time to get more of the pill?

I'm just going by the VFL summary quote below didn't see the game myself.:

Daniel, following his omission from AFL level, looked a cut above from the opening bounce, showcasing his poise, speed and skill through the midfield.

The senior Rioli started at the centre bounce and was involved in the opening passage, helping clear the ball and getting it going the Tigers’ way.
Wondered the same togger’d one.
We need a boost with our midfield speed. Aarts, Graham and Ross in the same team highlights that weakness.
Oner or two probably, Aarts and Graham should go, one to sub if Dan comes in.

No one's interested in listening to him speak about the Lions three flags anymore. What else can he talk about?

I heard him trying to talk up his old teammate Chris Scott the other week. Good grief... give the audience what they want. It's Tiger time.

Play him on a wing more often. Get him more involved.

I feel like most of our reprogramming efforts aren't terribly successful?

maybe 'playing to your strengths/role/process' possibly compromises flexibility?

sheds to a HBF was very successful, but sheds could play ruck and succeed

Bolton from small forward to inside midfield?
