Welcome Liam Baker

Nothing tough about that. Filthy. We are rightfully disgusted when it happens to our players.
Pig sarse

Fat arsed Carlton bastard had prior form (pun intended) for that sort of exaggeration against RFC

Just remember the "dive" he took from Neville Crowe's gentle tap in the '67 semi which cost Crowe his deserved spot in the GF two weeks later

Hence in that '73 clip - it was partly Laurie Fowler and partly the Karma Bus that collected the big prick/nick

And did nothing to help Crowe get off the charge.

Nicholls was and always will be an *smile*.

Hated him and Carlton with a passion ever since.

That incident there is the start of my hatred for the scum. And that happened 2 years before I was born! As far as I’m concerned, anything bad that happens to that dirty cheating lying *smile*, still isn’t enough

All fair enough re Nicholls but don’t change what Fowler did.

If you think that’s tough seriously. Gutless.

It was tough all right. Nicholls was 2 feet taller and 5 stone heavier (it was imperial back then not metric) and running straight at him.
The only people who would think it was gutless would be a relative.
It would not have knocked the skin of a custard tart. Nicholls went down like he was hit by a tram. Not a little jockey sized bloke.

Have a look at when he took a dive when Neville Crowe brushed a fly away when he was 2 yards from him. Nicholls went down quicker than when he was thrown in the slammer for embezzling needy women and children’s orphanages.
He can gagf. And that slimey club names their B&F after the prick. They can gagf too

That was normal back then. In any case, Nichols had never done us any favours, just ask Neville Crowe.

As for Bakes. Not crazy about him leaving, but I figure it has a lot to do with family and going home. He has been very good for us and he goes, I would think, with most fans best wishes. Hope he does well and the impression is that he was instrumental in getting us a decent deal. No hard feelings, will always be remembered fondly by Richmond.

Sure it was tougher back then but the fact that we are talking about this 50 years later clearly demonstrates it wasn’t normal.

It was one of a few remembered acts.

Re: the Nicholls incident, the commentators didn't make a big deal out of it. To the naked eye in real time it was just a heavy clash and Nicholls came off second best.

The Balme one on Southby was something else. Those Carlton players carried a grudge about that for decades. Maybe they still do.

It was remembered because very few players had the guts to try that on Nichols. Apart from the fact he was built like the proverbial, you knew he would likely want revenge someday soon.

Some people here should watch the 1971 GF, that was rugged, although 1973 was pretty spiteful too.

Baker said it was a “tough” call to leave Richmond.

“I always wanted to come back home and always dreamt of playing in front of friends and family in WA,” he said.

“I wanted to do it but it was coming to terms with it and that took the whole year pretty much.

“It says a lot about the club (that it was a difficult decision) and how good they were to me and the boys there, the players and staff were unbelievable and everyone who goes through the club will tell you the same thing.”

Bakes has redeemed himself in my eyes after the disaster B&F speech.

Worth mentioning how good his hands are above his head. Must have unusually long, or strong fingers or something because his marks really stick. I remember a night game in wet conditions (I think vs dees) no one but him was holding their overhead marks. It stood out.

I (kind of) remember a Carlton player (could have been Percy Jones?) years ago saying that Balme would never be welcome at Carlton.

Balme’s response was along the lines of “why would I ever want to go there?”

Apologies if I got the players wrong, was a long time ago. Someone might remember better

Sounds about right to me.

Sounds familiar to me too.

Big rivalry between Richmond and Carlton back then and a fair bit of feeling about a number of incidents .
