Welcome Josh Gibcus

He was orright this week. Not outstanding.
Same as the last 3 weeks against Marshall, Buddy and the VAFA team.

Don't know why people get their knickers in a knot over individual accolades, especially transient ones like rising star nominations.
I couldn't name more than 2 nominations from last year. Or this year.
But I can tell you that Gibcus will lead our backline for years and dominate big games. I'm happy enough with that

That’s why Tigerdell I would rather he don’t and become a player other clubs which they drafted.

The travesty is not getting a nom in the first few rounds.
So this, he’s been down the last month.

Quite rightly should already have one.

He will get one soon for a performance that we have watched him all year will call decidedly average compared to his other performances. And the club has gone on a social media blitz tonight for Gibcus, they are aware of the non nominatio and are doing their bit to keep him front of mind.

Amazingly no nomination yet. Yet again!

So many as praising the young man’s ability and showing this year but I’m over it anyway.

It’s not going to happen. When the club, coach say it’s because he plays for Richmond, you can’t help but feel there is deep hatred for the RFC, it’s success and the fact a rule had to be ‘invented’ to put a holt to our domination. We were ‘Tigers’ on the man on the mark.

Let’s all forget this Rising Star nomination as Gibsus will not get one!

This is how ridiculous conspiracy theories start so lets nip this one in the bud before it becomes facts.

There is a simple reason why Gibcus hasn't had a rising star nomination, he absolutely, unequivocally has not deserved it. Not even close.

Remember the Rising Star is not a who is the better player competition until the end, before that it is a who had the best game for that week. When you look at the nominees, they have smashed Gibcus' game each week. His best chance was round 6 but there was a blonde haired kid kicking 5 goals and winning the ANZAC Day medal that week.

Here is the comparison of each round winner v Gibcus. And let's never hear of this so-called farce again.

Round 1: Nic Martin (Ess) 27 disposals, 5 goals, Named best on AFL.com, 2 coaches votes. Gibcus 10 disposals, no best. no votes.

Round 2: Jake Bowey (Mel) 34 disposals, third best, 5 coaches votes. Gibcus 10 disposals, no votes, no best.

Round 3: Nick Daicos (Coll) 26 disposals, 1 goal, no votes, third best. Gibcus 8 disposals, no best, no votes.

Round 6: Jack Ginnivan (Coll) 5 goals, Anzac Medal, 8 coaches votes, named best. Gibcus 18 disposals, 12 marks, 5th best no votes.

Round 7: Jason Horne-Francis (Nth) 20 disposals, 10 contested, 400 metres gained, no votes, 2nd best. Gibcus 12 disposals, 6 marks, no votes, no best.

I don't think it should be based solely on possessions. Gibcus has been playing on seasoned, key position forwards, that should be factored into the equation. He towelled up Buddy Franklin in the 1st half a few weeks back, fair enough he had his colours lowered in the second half, but he still had a good game. And from memory Buddy got 2 or 3 goals in the 2nd half from free kicks.
Anyhow, Gibby, just like Dusty won't care about he Rising Star, he'd much rather a premiership.

but are you saying that Gibcus should have got a nomination for playing on Buddy?
He did very very well for nearly 3/4 but not the full game.
His opponent kicked goals on him. Thats the lot of a backman, can be better for most of it but still get beaten. As you say colours lowered.

Sounds like De Konning had a reasonably good game too, so was nominated.
That happens. Doesnt make Gibcus' game worse or his potential les

The Swans game is just an example.

Buddy kicked 4 goals in the 2nd half, 2 or 3 of them from free kicks. Yeah De Konning had a good game against the Crows with no Tex Walker in Geelong.

Statistically De Konning had the better game.

I didn't see the Cat v Crows game, but I say Gibcus had the better game, going by the calibre of opponents.

Prior to that match there had been similar calls that De Konning had been playing well and hadn't been duly recognised. He played well and was nominated.
Giving it to Gibcus that week would likely have been highly contentious he was beaten by his opponent. Gave away frees and goals.

I agree that it shouldn't be all about disposals or other stats. Recognition should be given to opponents, especially when its superstars like Buddy.

At the end of the day I don't think it matters. I'm more concerned by his drop off in the last month. Can he return to his top level?
Can he last the season? Will he be competitive in finals?

except for when they decide to look at someone's whole season, which they do sometimes.

for an award where there is a weekly "prize"- i assume some cash?- for a nomination, they criteria by which they decide is pretty fuzzy- surprising for the AFL i know.

I don't think it should be based solely on possessions.

I agree, that's why I included coaches votes and the AFL.com.au best players, because that gives the indication of influence on the game outside the stats.

In the De Koning example, he was rated in the best 7 players on the ground by the coaches. Gibcus was beaten by Franklin and made a couple of costly mistakes in a tight game. Very hard to make a case for getting a nomination there.

I don't think the criteria is fuzzy at all, they are nominated if they meet the age/games criteria and have the best game that round. When you look at that list they have all had pretty outstanding games. There's always going to be weeks where you have less eligible players to pick from of the games aren't as strong but that gives a chance to reward someone like Gibcus who is doing well without playing an outstanding individual game, because he will ultimately be the best game that round from what is left.

can you find the rules at all for the weekly nomination?
i can guarantee that at stages they use the "body of work" over the season to pick the weekly nomination.
and now i found this:

Selection Criteria:

To be eligible for the award:

  • a Player must be under 21 years of age (1st January 2022) and played 10 or fewer games before the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
  • In general, a Player judged to have played the best individual game of the round to be the basis of the weekly nomination.
  • When several players are judged to have played at a reasonably similar level, previous rounds / year to date performances are then taken into account.
  • The priority is to have the best performed 23 players nominated by the end of the season for consideration for the overall award. Therefore, in later rounds, year-to-date performances will be allocated increasing weight relative to performances in the round.

so it is the best player each week, except when it is not.

You've argued your case well TBR, 1 read the list round by round nodding away, coaches votes and bests a good objective measure, until I got to last round, which is a fly in your ointment. Body of work is a factor, that is stated by the assessors, on the record, which objectively makes the structure fuzzy in spite of your round by round analysis, which is compelling until last round, objectively fuzzy.

What is the criteria for assessing body of work? how does that mesh with week by week by week? Which trumps which and based on what? By any objective measure, that is fuzzier than a 50-year-old's Tinder photo.

Last round, Hobbs OK I suppose. Body of work? Not even close to JG. Last round JG down by his standards but those are high and he was still solid, as good as Hobbs. So 2 players, both play solid games, 1 has the superior body of work, plays a harder posi in a much stronger side, but the other gets the nod. Farce.

Factors like strength of side you are playing for should be part of the mix too.

yeah so 2 big get-out riders in there: the 'in general...' in point 2, and the body of work clause in point 3. Both in unison leave a lot of wriggle room, Fuzzy as you-know-what. The assessors think Hobbs has a superior body of work. Say no more.

I couldn't care less if Godcus gets a RS nom. Not a real fan of the club conducting a social media campaign for one. Just let the kid play, we know what we've what and shouldn't need the external validation.
