Welcome Derek Eggmolesse Smith

Noticed that he doesnt fly with his direct opponent into the marking contest, which leaves his opponent to have impact.
He is a good overhead, so maybe he is instructed to stay down?

Also seems to concede the mark when trailing his opponent one on one, rather than putting desperate marking pressure on.

Agree tracking nicely.

Beautiful kick but very ordinary at the contest.
Opposition coaches will start to pull his opponent closer to goal.

I think GWS put more work into him. He's great in space but not so strong in the clinches, and oppo sides will try to limit his creativity as he can set up our offensive ball movement if left alone.

Very solid with the ball.
Needs to just kick the ball sometimes though as he can turn it over or get done HTB when under pressure.
We've found one here.

He is going ok, not a large player (only 5'11" and 80Kg) so not so much his role to be spoiling marks. Not saying he shouldn't develop this but it will never be his strength. Would be nice if he could learn a bit of positioning to stop opponents marking but that is more a job for the larger defenders.

He's 22, played a handfull of games, and has great potential to fill the running half back role. Great kick so lets play him to his strengths.

Exactly.
Last week work was put into him. This week he was allowed room to show his class by foot.
One on one there is a weakness. Body contact too but the more he plays, the more he believes and the more confidence he will gain from AFL exposure.
Solid game.

Will need to bring it again next week against Brisvegas.

Plays to his strengths. Kicking.

I much prefer the ball in his hands than Short or Houli, who both almost always kick long to the contest whereas Egg finds angles and space. But he needs space himself to do that, and GWS worked it out. Other teams will, too.

Elite kick. That kick to Pickett on the wing who then delivered to Dusty for his first goal was centimetre perfect. I thought where the *smile* is he kicking that to but he nailed it.

Same here.
Was ready for the ‘expletives’ but apologised to the tv screen & to Eggy after...

Forgot to mention Short is as bad in the one and one too
Short is better.
Which is a bit of a damming indictment on DES.
Shorty was in Position A when Bruce was on the lead last night and needed to intervene; looked, and decided against it. Not good.
Currently DES is poor in contests and all-round defensive pressure, and needs to really work on this.
Because his offensive skills are great, and he is the obvious Houli heir apparent.
Houli had a knock early on on the defensive side of his game, but has been the tough nut in September for three years in a row, proving players can grow.
But in 2020, it would be a big risk to take two Offense Only defenders against good sides into finals.

I recon the main concern is that if he cops a hit the resulting change in internal pressure distribution will make his eyes pop out onto the front of his jumper

Egg needs to get some tuition from Dusty in the don't argue department, he had a.......crack though.

I think he is very exciting. Just scratching the surface. His kicking and decision making is elite.

Like a few of the young players, if he applies himself, he could be a very good, long term footballer. Or he could wallow and be nothing. But he seems to have overcome a few hurdles to get where he is today.

He well knows that his superb kicking is his strength; his team-role. The weakness is, which I've seen in both his VFL games and 2019 AFL, is that he tries to hang on to the ball looking for a way out to release a quality pass when he's put under pressure.
He needs to learn to just handball to another player when multiple tacklers are comimg for him or are about to grab him. Too worried about poor disposal, so he gets caught instead!
The coaches need to sort him out in this respect, but Houli had some weaknesses early in his career that some on here targetted often. As for Egg's contesting, body-work. Same thing - must improve - but naturally he's a work in progress. Few come in as complete players.

But there's plenty of quality attributes worth persevering with Egg, especially for that silky left foot.

From the TV vision he seems to be the "needling" type of defender as the opposition players are reacting to something he did. Happened last night and also against GWS
