We lost it at the selection table

With a much better clearance performance and gaining considerably more forward 50 entires then the opposition, maybe it’s time to ad more goal kicking ability then forward pressure ….how about we get it through the big sticks and then clear it out of the middle into the forward line again .

A forgotten kid may help our structure is Bauer , obviously he’s we’ll behind the 8 ball after missing much of the pre season , however can take a grab and appears to be a bit of a sharp shooter , again score board pressure . In saying that Cumberland is a must for me in our forward line . I actually like the thought of a forward showing no respect for his opponent and getting free to have shots at goal.

I like Clarke, I would have picked him before Mansell.
But the suggestion that he would definitely have made a difference, not by you, is a bit of a stretch i reckon.

and i think really only Hardwick and the MC can judge what impact Mansell had to our structure, positive or otherwise.
Dimma and the others know if he has played to instructions but post game, know no more than others as to whether his efforts were effective. Mansell had a moment, which finally allowed us to tie. Apart from possibly providing some niggle there is no advantage that Mansell provided that Sonsie or Clarke don't.

Over all and in no order I thought Balta, Mansell, Riewoldt and Ross were disappointing.
Particularly liked Nank, Lynch, Bolton, Grimes, Hopper and Taranto, and the Tiwi brothers.

Clarke for Mansell. Can apply the same pressure and hurt with ball in hand.

In his presser, Dimma said that Cumbo & Martin play the same role and they are retooling Noahs skill set.

And Ross for Sonsie at some stage.
If this is so regarding Cumbo not really happy about that. He had 2.11 goals per game last year, our 2nd highest average and he provided excellent defensive pressure. He's a perfect dangerous, attacking forward. Wonder what they're retooling him to.

Yeah Castagna should have been picked despite being injured and retired.

Yes we did lose the plot at the selection table
We had 66 inside 50s scored total of only 58 pts
Pies 62 inside 50s scored 125 pts
Roos 49 inside 50s scored 87 pts
Port 65 inside 50s scored 126 pts
Dees 60 inside 50s scored 115 pts

We had more inside 50s compared to all team mentioned We need goal kickers in our side
Playing ultra defensive players ie Mansell trying to hold teams out will not work We need to give ourselves a chance by selecting forwards that will help us a kick winning score

Just to clarify, you dont know what his role was or how well he did it, but you are sure the other 2 could have done it better?

The problem most fans have is they can judge how well a player does when they have the ball, but have no idea what role they are playing without it. It took some years to acknowledge the work our wings do, some still cant see it. But I am sure the MC is judging Mansell on how well he holds position, whether he gets sucked into packs, or stays in a position to restrict a defensive clearance, how quickly he reacts to the opposition winning the ball back, and how effectively he guards space to force them to kick down the line.

Agree with the comments re Mansell. However, I thought we blew the win by allowing Carlton’s tall defenders to take a gazillion intercept marks.

The philosophy of our forward line play during the glory years was to make a contest, bring the ball to ground, make it messy, run it in for a goal. The aerial contests were generally provided by Riewoldt, Caddy and Castagna. When the ball hit the ground, we had Edwards, Lambert, Rioli and Castagna. Georgie, of course, was the master of the mess. Then they would all combine for the run in to goal.

Georgie, for all his weaknesses, was a big part of our success. Primarily, he was the player in our team with the smallest ego and the biggest heart.

Mansell is the wrong replacement. Jack Graham maybe. Cumberland, yes but he needs to check the ego in at the door before each game.

But we also need to replace Edwards and Lambert. And JR!

Yes.
And we have got an absolute beauty, but he is tearing it up on the half-back flank.
Daniel is fitter, stronger and more self-assured than he was in the premiership years.
He is a damaging forward. Calm and composed and good for multiple creative goal assists.
We need his speed and awareness around Dusty. Both are instinctive and think fast enough for Jack.

We watched last year as we lost multiple close games.

*Although mercurial, why can't I look when Shai kicks for goal.

HF RIOLI REIWOLDT MARTIN

F Cumberland Lynch Tall rotation?

MARTIN/ CUMBERLAND move up the ground then deep.

Shai/Cotch go forward in rotations.

Short (Band F HB) and Bakes to the backline.

If we are in a close game and we have the 'dream three' on the half-forward line, I'm confident when the ball comes out of the centre.

Natural forwards are the spectator joy in our game and are scary for opposition coaches.

You make my point. You have worked out his instructions. You as well as the rest of us can then decide how well he did.
I don’t think he did so well. He is determined and strong but lacking in nous and skill.

Lynch, Riewoldt, Martin, Bolton, Moju plus there's others that roll forward from the midfield. Yet we kicked a miserable 8 goals for the game ( as did Carlscum with McKay n Curnow forward ) not sure it's a lack of goal kicking ability as such.

Disagree. What I saw was our backline playing like 2017. Elite cohesion. Our Midfield beating the Blues. Forward line scoring will come.
I am extremely confident we will finish top 4 and have a huge crack this year!!

So what did you think of his positioning when the Blooze had the ball? Did he cover the space he was instructed to?

Other teams get goals from free kicks to their forwards though the RFC rarely if ever does, and on the odd chance the Tigers forwards actually get a free kick they miss anyway :))

Agree, not many teams will concede just 8.10 against two of the 10 Best Tall Forwards in the league.
Tell me before the game Curnow/McKay will kick 4, I'll take it.
So I thought we did really well to hold them to 8.10.
That's also without Gibcus and Tarrant, and with a Miller who trained all summer up forward, good signs.

And also agree forward line scoring will come when we get some of the kink outs of the system.
Cumberland/Ryan and a couple of others good options to bring into the forward line as well.

McKay kicked 1.2, I cant fathom why everyone here thinks he was flogged. Not true.
Ummm. McKay was fairly dominant over Noah for much of the game. His finishing for goal does not tell the full story.
