Just putting it out there but has our midfield looked better without Cotch this year?
Love him to bits but reckon he has slowed down significantly this year and boy did it show tonight. Should have played ressies.

No

Hardwick keeps on making some glaring selection mistakes over the course of a season that simply do not work. The 2018 PF was disaster waiting to happen with the unfit players he went with.

Bring any player back into the AFL after a seven week layoff and you believe in two things:

1/- That player will immediately “click” back into action yet Cotchin has always been a slow burn as he works his way into a season.

2/- Putting certain player’s reputation before those that have been doing the hard yards in the 1sts and the 2nds is just bad coaching and Hardwick has a history of doing this.

Hardwick can wear this but if he keeps on doing it he really needs to be challenged hard because his track record on this issue is not good.

Injuries have been a curse this year and have affected every line of the team. We are not going to get even close to a top four position and we may even slide out of the eight and not play finals in 2019. Such is life but I would like to think the coaches will trial players who merit the chance at AFL level along with keeping a serious eye on end of season draft options; and play draft hard ball at the end of the season.

As for the new rules introduced at the beginning of this season; can our coaching staff implement a training program to teach these rules to our players each and every week.

Your not seriously suggesting Cotch come back via the VFL - that is just plan stupid.

He got through the game OK

He gave us nothing. He should’ve played in the reserves last week

Thought he was Ok - not great but not our worst - again for Cotch to play in the VFL is one of the craziest thing I have heard all year - sorry Zips

Good on Trent for coming out and admitting his mistakes tonight.
Said he shouldnt of had that pie and coke at half time.

He’ll learn.

I don't think the 3 glasses of wine helped either

Lots of bollocks above.

What is being suggested here?
  • We give Cotch no AFL game time before we play the ladder leaders?
  • We put our captain in the reserves?
  • We expected him to come back and not be rusty?

What a load of crap. This was the perfect game to come back. North are a lot lower on the ladder than us so it should have been a good game to get some match fitness and get him back into the swing of things. The fact the whole side played badly was not on him, we would have known that he would be down on form after being out for 7 weeks but we bring him back now so he has at least one game under his belt before Geelong. In any case he was in there trying to get the ball out of the packs and he had a reasonable game. Not bad for someone out for almost 2 months.

As for the Preliminary Final last year, what, you leave out your best players and save them for later in the season? Get real, it was the Preliminary Final, you play your stars even if they are slightly injured because there is no tomorrow and later in the season is a week away . . . if you make it. Quite a few of the players who were in the side on PF day last year would have been rested in a H&A game, but you make it as far as the Preliminary Final you gotta roll the dice.

Cant blame Cotch, did some good things, and was hard at it - but ran out of steam.

I wonder how many players thought, the Capt is back, we're good now? I hope none, but on tonight's efforts, a number of players relaxed.

I worried about that pre game.

Also Vlastuin has been very good inside the past fortnight. Disappointing to see him sent back again.
Cotch will be better for the run but he played like a footballer who's missed 8 weeks last night.
Not just his fault but the fact was we were absolutely smashed inside the contest last night.
Cunnington in particular is a very strong player.

Thought Nick has plenty of midfield time early but couldn’t make an impact.

Only sent back after that.

Biggest reason for loss was Norths dominance overhead and the inability of our mosquito fleet to have any influence.

Yep Vlastuin couldn't get it at all. I don't see him as a permanent mid. Pinch hitter ok but I'd rather see Vlastuin in his usual position and have Martin playing more midfield time.

Don't agree with some of the above posts. Yes a couple of stupid frees , but was one of only a few that were decent last night

What is bollocks is playing your best players underdone or injured and it may have escaped your attention but by doing so we lost the PF by a long way, and lost against the Roos by a long way.

Making the same mistake over and over again and losing is truly bollocks!!!!!! A good coach plays his best, fittest players each game and those coming back from long term injuries need a run in the seconds. That is good coaching and good club culture.

This proves that if Rance is anywhere near ready, Hardwick will risk playing him.

Vlastuin spent the 1st half on ball. He and Shedwards swapped at halftime.
nothing to do with Cotchin playing.

Same as Martin. he has spent a lot of time up forward in recent weeks.

Cotchin was fit. I assume all those suggesting he should have played VFL wanted Menadue to replace him?

And the WEagles, and most of the rest of us, are probably glad they dont listen to those on here who reckon only 100% players should play. Without McGovern and his cracked ribs the world would be stuck with the pies as premiers right now.

Um but who was injured?

Yep, worded that badly. Cotchin wasn't match fit. Regardless of how good skipper is, I think he should have come through the VFL.

We got slapped by North fuc&ing Melbourne by six goals! Cotchin May have been fit but he was way underdone and should have come through the VFL. Face the facts; we won last week and lost this week as much as anything at the selection table!!!

I am feeling confident that Cotchin will have a big game against the pussy cats. He needed the NM game to get his full confidence back with the hamstring. The only way a player can truly test out a rehabilitated hamstring is under full match conditions. Also, he will know the vital importance of keeping going the RFC three game winning streak against Geelong.

I despise Geelong because they were our nightmare bogey team for 20 years (or maybe 30 years). It would be a dream come true for the RFC to become Geelong's bogey team.
