Training For 2023

AFL boosts soft cap, coaches hail 'step in the right direction'

All 18 clubs will have a total increase of $750,000 in their football department soft cap over the next two years

Jul 14, 2022

THE AFL will increase the soft salary cap on football department spending by $750,000 across the next two years, with some medical and mental health spending to be exempt from the new limits.

The League announced the soft cap will increase by $500,000 in 2023 and $250,000 a year later, meaning it will kick in at $7.2 million in 2024.

An AFL Coaches Association proposal for a portion of each senior coach's salary to be exempt from the soft cap was not included.

Football department spending refers to staff such as coaches, list management, fitness and medical teams.
Meeennhh........still a few million short of the numbers we requested.

Anyone seen Luke Meehan?
Hope he’s not in charge of strength and conditioning.
Makes Caesar look like Arnold Schwarzenegger

Expect our players to slim down over this preseason. A few posters would do well to follow Luke's program

That doesn't surprise me. We all love the athletic abilities of Balta and he has had some great moments but he is far from the finished product and most of us have been guilty of over rating him. Hopefully a lot more improvement and consistency is still to come and he reaches those elite levels.
To be honest - Dimma should wear some of the responsibility for Balta's up and down year. The FAILED experiment of Balta up forward took away from his development down back.

Blind Freddy can see Noah is a much better defender than forward.

I think that's harsh, he might be better now but it is easier to be a defender so that's to be expected.

Forwards are harder to find and more important, if he can become a good one it is well worth the disruption.

Yeah I agree, Balta played forward and back as a junior and with Tarrant coming in he was the logical choice to try up forward but at this stage it certainly looks like he is more suited to the backline. I guess if you don't try, you don't know so I had no problem with the experiment.

Balta's only shown promise when running from defence, right from his early days when he'd take off and boot it long. He's shown very little when used further up the ground. This year was a backward step, and his foray forward along with a new backline of Taz and Gibbo didn't help.

In Truck we trust.

Na, he's played some good games forward. He was good when moved forward in the second half of Round 1 v Carlton. He was good the next week when he kicked 4 goals against GWS. He played a good CHF's game in the draw against the Dockers, brain fart notwithstanding. Forward is harder and he's done less of it, so of course he looks better down back.

Yeh, its why there are so few gun key forwards. Such a physically and mentally demanding position. It was worth a try, but no point if we have both Tom & Jack playing. Noah doesn't have the forward smarts to work with them. But he will be better for the experience and worth trying if either of them miss some games next year (which is likely).

If you have ahleticism as a backman its not that hard a job. And once they get a bit of confidence they can start going for marks like Rance did as his career progressed. He became a very good contested mark. It's purely because your opponent is also trying to mark it and not spoil. Much easier to take a mark when your opponernt isn't do everything to stop you.

I don't mind him having the occassional run as relief ruck either.

Yes but if Dimma hasn’t tried Balta forward then we wouldn’t know. Cant blame Dimma - he tired, it didn’t work so Balta returned to the backline.

Hindsight is wonderful in hindsight.

With taz and gibbo included it gave us the flexibility to try , why not

Great to see the new boys getting in early and getting amongst it.

On a side note re Mansell, he needs a big preseason and to show improvement in 2023 or he will likely come under the blowtorch at years end.

Good sign he is also in getting some early work in.

Hes got the attitude and is hard at it unquestionably but is untidy and undisciplined and those two aspects are what will stop him progressing unless he tidies them up.

I like the lad and hope he kicks on but he does need to tidy his game up a bit in those areas.

Best take out of this is the Sonz getting in some early running sessions.
Especially with a mentor like Taranto who is an elite runner.
I’m pumped

Just hope Mansell doesn’t tackle anyone unnecessarily

Yep good news on Sonsie. Especially as I heard he was injured again recently??
That's also why Melee is still on the list ahead of some others too.

I didn't see Sonsie running in that channel 7 clip, as they showed Tarranto running laps I just caught the briefest of a shot of the Sonz stationary in his training singlet. Did you see him actually running?

I didn’t see it Caesar.
Azzatiger reported it.
But if you didn’t see it, it probably didn’t happen

It was a 10sec grab of TT running laps in baggy shorts and an even baggier muscle top that all the kids are into these days.
There was a few players there training.
