This has puzzled me for some time.

We are woefull in the ruck. In the centre, around the stoppages everywhere.

Do we actually train for our ruckmen to jump early all the time. we look uncordinated all the time.

This has been going on for some time, that I'm just amazed it hasn't been fixed. I am happy to eat my words if this is a deliberate tactic of ours, but I can't imagine why -

Is Monkhurst still our ruck coach. if so i would say goodbye.

thoughts.

Why do ruckmen jump up at centre bounces? They go up, and are down when the ball is bounced.
I agree with you U2, its always been a bit of a puzzle to me too.

Been watching Simmo too long. He always went early, but I just wish Gus could keep his feet. For a big bloke he hits the dirt after a contest more times than not.

Even in general play gus falls over. This is something that can be fixed. As for Simmonds he had an effective kicking percentage of 22%. That is just not good enough for a senior player.

Sadly Simmo is our most effective ruckman at the moment but his disposal around the ground is enough to say dont bother turning up in 2010. Last night he was so costly by foot and hand, and this has been the case all year, he must go.

I'll say good-bye to Simmo & Graham as well.
yep simmo is struggling and gus just to unskilled to unco. throw pattison into grahams class and putt looking more like a forward and the state of the ruck stocks is grim. recruiting and cattle people.
we have to quickly assess and move on keep turning them over until we find players up to standard.who here truly believes simmonds is the way forward or pattison and graham are good enough . all three should go but we may be forced to keep one to help protect vickery and brown as they develop. either that or trade for a ready to go ruckman and get rid of the three.

Gus looks twice as awkward as he really is. His ball skills are are generally very tidy and he doesn't try to play outside his capabilities.
Definately needs to improve his rucking skills but at about 22y.o. and less then 20 senior games there's another season to be put into the camel yet before we need to start worrying about him.

Dunno, must be alone here but I thought Graham was OK in the ruck last night. When he throws his big body around he is far more effective. Needs to do this MORE. Seemed to win a lot of taps and took a few marks as well (mind you he dropped some too :-[). Best game for a while IMO.

he is not and never will be up to standard blind freedy can see it. sheesh do we ever learn. get him out the door and try someone else before we expend to much time energy and precious little resource into him.

Tend to agree, however:
1. He is still only 22, most ruckmen are at their peak in their mid 20's
2. The old Collingwood hack teaching the ruckmen won't be there next year
3. We really don't have anyone else, and Lord knows there's about 15 duds we can delist before we get to Gus.

Take a deep breath Claw. There's a stack lined up at the back door ready for eviction before we need to bother with Gus, there's still some upside to the big camels development unlike a bunch of others.

Gus and Patto will be there next year to provide a body to protect Browne and Vickery (don't forget Browne needs to get an engine for senior football yet, that will take another pre-season or so. If we get another ruckman later in the draft and a rookie we would look a bit better. Putt is miles away yet, needs to get a body before he will turn around.

Simmo maybe as trade bait for anything to the bulldogs, they like hack ruckmen/KPP these days don't they? Otherwise gone.

Monkhurst still is our ruck coach.

He needs to go. I don't think any of our rucks have gone forwards at all whilst he's been there. I think we need to go get a successful ruckman, a champion, and bring them in on a part time basis.

I wonder if Steven King might be interested in a part time role next year if he retires at years end.

graham cops a hard deal i reckon. not a world beater. prob never will be, but he has made huge improvements in the last 2 years and is still young. if he keeps up his improvement, which the development time of other rucks suggest he will, he could become a decent afl ruckman.
i dont reckon there are to many other rucks from his draft doing too much better.

Posted on this before.

Monkhurst, aside from anything else, played as a barging type ruck that is just about gone from the AFL. Think he also played AFL before the ruck circle came in to play. Stunning that Wallace wanted rucks who gave up height and strength for mobility and then recruits the most well known dinasour ruck from recent AFL history.

Noticable in last nights game that aside from other faults, as often as not tap backwards and now are tapping direct to ground at central stoppages, our rucks rarely get front position at boundary ruck contests.

We need a modern ruck coach and to utilise Tuck as a third man up on contests. We need to tap to advantage virtually all the time since we do not have the strength or skill in our midfield.

It is worth noting that Vickery and Browne showed more skills before Monkhursts coaching than after.

Was this rucking against other 17 year olds in the TAC cup? Because Monkhurst coached them all through the preseaon

Rucking is overrated.

I'd suggest we give up trying to find a quality one.

Play with 4 midfielders in the middle. One can stand in the circle but not compete the ruck.

They can have their bloke jump and win the tap against nobody, but we'll have a 4 on 3 at ground level.

If they want to grab it out of the air, we'll have someone there to grab them straight away.
