Firstly before all those Danny Frawley haters reply to this post, may I point out that i too doubt Frawley has the necessary goods to be a top line coach. However as opposed to those who ridicule him and the RFC players I really hope he proves me wrong and can turnaround the Tigers this season. I will be forever grateful that he proved me to be a novice.
The reason i say this is because i couldn’t get out of my head today how this sport can eat up its, coaches, teams and clubs. Finally out Tigers will be out of the feeding frenzy of the media's glaze as we pass the baton onto Collingwood, Hawthorn and even Carlton after their 100 point demolition today.
Instead of Frawley it more than likely will be Peter Schwab and Hawthorn under the microscope. My mind went back to last year when the Hawks were in exactly the same position and managed to recover. By seasons end it seemed everybody was singing Schwab's praises and they entered this season a top four prediction.
I then thought of round 8 last year and the Tigers were flying with 6 wins from 8 matches. Out of curiosity I went back to the pages on PRE then and funnily enough many of those bagging Frawley, the Club and the team were quite positive then.
It's funny but in the AFL 8 teams will make finals and it's a certainty that 8 wont and obviously the bottom four will mostly have very ordinary seasons win/loss wise.
What got me on the weekend was the media, they had changed their target from Richmond to Hawthorn and all the same lines, questions and arguments being asked about us was then being asked about Hawthorn. The media are really pathetic at times. I think they simply aren't happy unless they can manage to get somebody's scalp.
Which brings me back to Frawley and the Tigers. They have had to endure what must have been unbearable pressure tension and hardship for the past four weeks but especially in the past week. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to go to ground and keep away from the public glare. Instead Frawley to his credit defender Tiger supporters right to voice their frustration, stuck up for his players, went onto talking footy when most others wouldn't have considered and got there act together to manage a tough hard fought win with a number of their better players out injured, dropped or out of form.
Wether by plan or by necessity he has also introduced some excitng kids Hyde, Roach, Hartigan, Weller, Schulz. Add to that the faith that he has shown in Krakouer is starting to pay off and his gamble on Tim Fleming is showing reward with him collecting 24 possession following his 20+ possessions last week. Maybe we will get his critics calling for his trading again.
Despite all this criticism and the supposed chaos surrounding him and the team he was able to get his boys together for a memorable win. It is only one win admittedly and he and the team has a long way to go to make up lost ground. However they all (and Frawley in particular) have just passed a huge test of character and deserve justifiable praise and recognition for this.
Maybe we (myself included) should give the whole group a chance to prove themselves before writing them off before the half way mark of the season.
