My pet hate is the Americans refusal to use the suffix 'ly'

As in "I'm hurt real bad."

This isn't grammar, but while we're on the septics, what really irks me is the way they drop the "and" when saying numbers greater than 100. 123 is "one hundred, twenty-three". The only thing more irritating is the fact that some Aussie commentators are picking up on it, too (take note, Rex Hunt).

Re: The Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation Thread

When they quote a price that's over a nice round number

"its eight dollars plus change"

Gives me the sh!ts. If the change is irrelevant then why not just quote, $8.00

Re: The Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation Thread

A bit more on Hence. (Nerdlinger interest only.)

There
Thence From There
Thither To There

Here
Hence From Here
Hither To Here

Only Here, There and Hence remain in common use. Although most of us are familiar with the idea of a "come hither look".

When we use the word Hence in common English we usually imply a gentle logical link:

Andrew Demetriou is a brat HENCE nobody likes him.
Andrew Demetriou is a brat (from Here - this place or idea) nobody likes him.

It's not a fully expressed logical sequence or it would read:

Andrew Demetriou is a brat.
Nobody likes a brat.
THEREFORE
Nobody likes Andrew Demetriou.

FWIW I like the Hence statement better.

BTW you could use a semi-colon in place of Hence:

Andrew Demetriou is a brat; nobody likes him.

In place of Therefore you use a colon:

Andrew Demetriou is a brat and nobody likes a brat: nobody likes him.

Where, Whence and Whither are more of the same.

You Scored an A

You got 10/10 questions correct.

It's pretty obvious that you don't make basic grammatical errors.
If anything, you're annoyed when people make simple mistakes on their blogs.
As far as people with bad grammar go, you know they're only human.
And it's humanity and its current condition that truly disturb you sometimes.

As long as he buys a membership, I could care less.

You mean you couldn't care less. Saying you could care less implies that you do care to some extent as there is a less amount you could care.

Sorry, but that particular mangling of that phrase drives me nuts. Seppo grammar. :police:

Yes, the "I could care less" is a relatively new phrase from the US that for some reason Aussies are starting to use. Very odd.

"Anyways" I have stuff to do so I'd better go.........

"Off of" annoys me to. As when someone says "I got up off of the couch" or " I borrowed the lawn mower off of my neighbour".

Yeah, that's an American thing which some Australians use these days. Another one like that is the word 'gotten' instead of 'got'; I don't remember hearing the word 'gotten' when I was a kid, and I'm only in my early 30s. The American word that annoys me the most though is use of the word 'disrespect' as a verb rather than a noun. The opposite of respecting someone is not disrespecting them, it is not respecting them. Clearly way too many Aussies watch Oprah!

Back to the topic of spelling, I've started noticing recently that a lot of people mix up 'then' and 'than'.

Sorry, I'm an ex-teacher (of maths!), and thus a pedant, but one of the things that give me the sh!ts is the use of the word criteria as a singular noun. If you want to use a word of 3 or more syllables try and get it right.

Our beloved administrator committed this error in a post yesterday or today.

It's either "the criterion is" or "the criteria are".

I'd be sorry too.

By "and thus a pedant" are you saying ex-teachers are pedants or ex-maths teachers are pedants?

That is extremely condescending. Not everyone has reached your lofty education standards.

This is exactly what I hate about the holier than thou grammar police on this thread. It really disappoints me that people have left this site because they were made to feel inferior when their poor grammar/spelling was highlighted. If someone feels the need to educate others they should do so in private rather than risk humiliating them by publicly pointing out their deficiencies.

I hope you feel better for telling people my post gave you the *smile*. I must have been absent from school the day the criteria/criterium lesson was given. Can you suggest a 2 syllable word I can substitute in future? ::)

Rosy, Why do you think YT is referring to you? ( and dont avoid the swear filter! :D)

I think YT's comments "one of the things that give me the sh!ts is the use of the word criteria as a singular noun. If you want to use a word of 3 or more syllables try and get it right..Our beloved administrator committed this error in a post yesterday or today.." ,coupled with the fact that I did recently use the word criteria as he mentioned, is a fair indication. Do you agree or do you think it's a coincidence and he was referring to some other site administrator and their incorrect usage of the word?

I didn't avoid the swear filter.
