The Geelong Cants

Off field they landed another $40m from govt to "finish" their rebuild. By the time this is finished it will be time to upgrade the first stand. If they had rebuilt the whole ground at once would have cost the taxpayer half what it has.
They've taken full advantage of being in a marginal electorate

By the time the ground is big enough to host a final they may be anchored to the bottom 6!
Trouble is the capacity increase has been very minimal. All about better facilities which they parlay into higher income through reserved seats, catering, functions.

I just love the fact that after years of suffering at the hands of Geelong, going right back to the horrible 150+ point massacre, all 3 premierships have featured a finals win against them.
A trifecta as well in that it was in a qualifying, Preliminery and Grand final

Geelong’s trade period concedes they realise they’re not good enough. That’s fine, but how do they try to get better? Get more talent.

There’s a small chance it works out, but it’s a dangerous perspective. They’ll be walking a tightrope next year, very much like us in 2016.

In 2016, we had overpaid in desperation for pure talent so we could improve (how else can you improve, right?). We mentally collapsed after Collingwood and their better list beat us in Round 2.

Geelong should be similarly vulnerable with their talent mindset. The age factor adds even more pressure, as they’ll be aware they’ve tiptoed up to the edge of a cliff.

Hopefully we get the chance to beat them early in 2021. We might break them for good.

LIVE IN GEELONG and i can still see them dropping down a little as most their list had near career best seasons, danger and selwood wont improve,
while stanley had his best ruck year ever, menagola played out of his skin, toheey is aging and on the decline, henderson had his best year since joining the cats, hawkins career best year, guthrie, duncan best years ever also, geelong could not have played better but from 22minutes into 2nd quater untill final siren ,in 2 old style quaters about 60 minutes of footy we beat them score wise by 53 points ,thats a all mighty big margin, tiges have way more upside and ability to improve.

haha.

I can't really fathom the Geelong brother concept.

I dont have a single blood relative who doesn't barrack for Richmond.

Geelong will have a 4 elbow attack in forward 50 now,

and their wings will have 65 years between them.

they might improve, but we can rule a line through them
Fairly eZy when ya think about it, I'm the black sheep of the family.
Grew up on the Bellarine peninsula way back a long time ago, when pretty much everyone from that area and most of the Western District of Vic followed the local VFL club Geelol. I was a fairly contrary little *smile* back then ( nothings changed much 'cept the hair n wrinkles ) n rummaged around for my own team n point of difference. Jumped on the Tiger bandwagon start of the 67 season n couldn't have picked a better roller coaster ride to be on.

I said this 12 months ago and was wrong but I’m going with again for ‘21.

Cats to drop off in ‘21. Too many oldies and the end comes quick when you’re over 30. I reckon they climbed the mountain but didn’t reach the summit and now they’ll tumble back down. Reckon we killed another club.

Cut and paste in 12 months if I’m wrong again.....

I’m sure he was 26 TM?
Yep. 26 n in his prime age when we got him, little bit different to grabbing a 28 y.o. who may just be starting his decline. Barring injury, with the sports science n training methods they have now. It's no surprise to see players still playing well in their early 30's, but when father time hits. He usually hits fairly hard.

Jack probably hit his best years 28-30, until he hurt his knee last year.

Tommahawk has had a career best year at 32.

If they don’t get a Premiership next year they’re going to fall off a cliff just like the Crows and GWS have.

Hey 23, you spelled 'cants' wrong. Is that the Danish pronunciation?

Tell me I'm wrong but 2019 was Geelong's best opportunity to win the flag. They finished top of the ladder with Hawkins, Ablett, Danger, Tim Kelly, Stewart and blicavs all playing really well and making the AA squad. They led Richmond by 21 points at half time in the prelim and capitulated in the second half but had they beat Richmond it turns out they would have smashed the banged-up giants in the granny. This year plenty of their players have started to decline like ablett, selwood, Tuohy etc and they lost Tim Kelly. This year, their age really showed, particular in the final quarter of the grand final and had the quarters been full length, they would have lost by 50+ points. Next year they bring in Jezza, Smith and Higgins who are all classy players but they still have an aging list with plenty of players who may worsen but limited players who are yet to hit their prime in Grian, Simpson, Parfitt, Henry, Mark OC and Jake Kolodjashnij as the only players who played in the grand final who are under 26. Meanwhile, young teams like the dogs, lions and even the suns are catching up to them

Sent my Bro a text last night suggesting his mob had sold their future in giving up their three first rounders n $900 large for Cameron, plus the other two old farts. Told him all those pensioners would be lining up at their local cafe with their seniors cards out just so they could save a dollar on their weekly coffee n cake morning.

His response was simply if they can't win the flag with Cameron, Higgins n Smiff added to the list then it would simply prove that Scott cant coach. Happy to let him know we'd be waiting for his mob of ego driven, self centered individuals once again.
He's not bloody talking to me again.
They said he same kinda things when "The Holy Trinity" arrived....

Most years one side drops out of the 8 from the top 4 and either 1 or 2 drop out of the bottom 8 sides. It is really hard to predict the top 4 to slide, who would have thought the crows, Melb or GWS at the time would crash so far.

So from Port, Bris, tigers and Cats my pick is the cats as I think there are teams who will overtake them next year with pace. The other could be Port as they had a massage advantage this year but next year maybe will be the first time in awhile where they don’t tumble completely out of the 8.

Pies and Eagles the other top 8 contenders who could fall away.

Yep, history says it’s hard to stay up for longer than 4 years. 2021 is our year 5. Please let the good times continue to roll.

I agree - I think we enter that zone where we can’t just assume - it will come down to how hungry we are and if our young group of players (Dow, RCD, Stack, Ross and CJJ) can’t improve enough to get plenty of games I think we are vulnerable and tbh I can’t see improvement from Houli, Jack and some of our older players anymore. Our improvement has to come from our youth for us to get better.

At he moment we are still better than any other team so if we come back to the pack we are still in it with a big fat chance.

There are many if‘s against our contenders
- can Daniher stay on the park
- can the Doggies manage a Treloar and Dunkley dynamic
- can a slow Geelong find a finals gear
- how will port and Eagles go without the hub advantage they had this year
- can the pies even field a team next year

saints are a Smokey and lions will improve

Are you thinking what I am thinking - that there’s a quaddie around the corner.

We are yet to smash those hoops in an elimination final...... on our way to a three peat. ;)

Maybe, but we would have to finish 5-8 to play them in an elimination final and I would prefer that not to happen. However if we did then beating them again would be very nice.
We have also yet to play them in a semi final as well of course
