Following from the dreadful loss to the Bulldogs there was much gnashing of teeth and loading of manure trucks in anticipation of a loss to the lowly Lions. Personally I couldnt wait to get to the Gabba from my humble abode a few hours away. With my eldest son in tow we were excited at watching the Tigers continue their Gabba winning streak. Alas work commitments got in the way so it was off to the couch we go in full battle dress.
All the prematch talk was focussed on the decimated Lions with injuries to Merrett, Lewy , Rockliff and a few others giving us a big advantage. But as we all know that sort of expectation usually results in disappointment and PRE meltdowns. Would the Tigers fight back from last weeks fiasco? Would the Lions lift to secure an underdog victory?
The game started and the returning Shane Edwards immediately made his presence felt with a quick handball to Miles who hit up Griff with a little chip to the 50. Griff obliged with a booming 55m kick off three steps to kick the first within 90 seconds. Within in a minute KMac kicked a beauty from near the boundary and the Tiges were away. A quick reply to McStay and its game on. A few minutes of scrappiness' later and the Lions pull level through a goal from a very chubby Christensen. At the halfway mark of the first many Tiger supporters would have been pretty nervous, particularly with a lack of scoring from our dominance. A goal from everybodies favourite whipping boy Morris got the Tiges back in front. Following a poor kick from Spud Robinson Cotch kicks a goal with a snap from 35 after a good intercept. The difference between Cotch in this game and the Bulldogs game is stark and was certainly welcome after a week where he probably copped more criticism than ever before. He certainly stamped himself on the game early and played with an attacking flair and creativity that we had all been calling for. Without a great deal more happening in the quarter, a typical Richmod moment led to a goal to Zorko after the siren closing the margin to 9 points at quarter time.
Within 2 minutes Brisbane had scored a goal after Morris, back in the familiar confines of the backline handed a gift to Paparone, hitting him lace out on the 50 as remotes hit tv screens around the country. Following five minutes of arm wrestling Knights kicked a beautiful goal from 50 following some very smart work with Chappy, Cotch and Ellis all involved in a smooth move from defence. Geez it was great to see the classy finishing of Knights which was a timely reminder of why we recruited him. Unfortunately only minutes later he left the field and walked around the boundary with a look that suggested he is just about done. Horrible luck for him, and possibly the end of his time at Tigerland. A damn shame. My play of the night came when Dusty finished of a near length of the ground run to goal from some clever work from Jack. Dusty started his run at half back and followed the ball all the way to receive the hands in the goalsquare. A good 100m run suggesting that his tank is really building. A great sign for all of us. Goals to Newy and Jack finished the half with the Tigers holding a four goal lead.
Jack kicked his second from a lovely left foot snap in the pocket which was matched by a Gordon goal in the opposite pocket minutes later and Tiger supporters started to breathe a little easier.
A soccer goal in the square from Jack and the resulting centre bounce led to a humorous little moment from Ivan doing his best Danielsan impersonation after being shepherded out of the contest. I love the big fella! The remainder of the quarter was somewhat laclustre. A couple of goals each way and the Tigers held a seven goal lead at the final change.
As the last quarter commenced the only real interest lay in the final margin. I actually was quite comfortable which is rare given the tigers history of coughing up big leads. But this Lions team posed no real threat so it was nice to watch a final quarter without the usual nerves. By halfway through the quarter Newy, Dusty, Gordon and KMac had each kicked their second goals and things were looking pretty ordinary for the Lions. By the end of the quarter goals to Griffo, Lloyd who came on for Knights in the second, Edwards and fourth to Jack finished off a big 79 point win.
For the Tigers, Cotchin was fantastic proving the knockers from the previous week (myself included) that he still has plenty left. Houli lifted also providing excellent run from the back half, supported well by Hunt and Kmac who have brought a really strong work ethic to the team. Edwards once again proved his importance to the team with his lightning hands setting up plenty of forward thrusts out of nothing.
On a night where most of our players beat their opponents it was great to see a scoreboard dominance as well as a statistical one.
Now to Friday night footy and our Anzac Day eve clash with the Demons, hopefully there will be no repeat of the farce of last years "Tom Hafey" game. We owe them one.
