RICHMOND VS HAWTHORN MATCH DAY REPORT
Tiger fans go into this game with a number of points of interest – whether we can build on some patchy good form and get two wins in a row and whether we can get three wins over the Hawks in three years. For Hawk fans – there must be some fear that we are their bogey team (just like Geelong
) and the worry that they might be in the initial stages of a form slide.
To start the game Hawthorn set up with Lake as a loose man in defence with Gibson on Jack, Conca goes to Hodge, Langford (surely the blond love child of his father and Gary Ayres – uglier than the former, prettier than the latter) to Cotchin, Jacko to Burgoyne, Grimes to Gunston and Morris to Rioli. Richmond are kicking to the Punt Road end and McDonough is the sub. The Hawks have a two goal wind advantage.
First quarter.
Hawthorn take command early winning a lot of contested ball and cleaning up Richmond loose kicks and skill errors. Mitchell is sitting behind play when the Hawks have it in their forward half and is cleaning everything up – especially when the Tiges kick in hope from defence. By the 8.30 mark they have 21 points on the board but have missed several sitters from in front and could have been much further ahead.
We haven’t scored. Our best opportunity came from Jack’s effort in the pocket blind handballing to Cotchin in the square only for he ball to be intercepted and cleared by the Hawks. It was a panicked manoeuvre brought on by sustained Hawks pressure. Normally, he would have kicked it himself.
Edwards gets our first major with 7.40 on the clock after a scrambly centre clearance and a neat chip kick from Gordon on the flank. H 21 R 6.
The big board tells us that we are ahead of Hawthorn in contested possessions so far. Hard to figure that out.
More easy set shots missed by Hawthorn until a panicked turnover to Morris in the back pocket results in Rioli brilliantly tapping a deflection down to Lewis who goals on the snap. H 29 R 6.
Hawks get two more shots at goal through running handball receives from marks just outside the fifty only to score more points.
With 20 seconds left Jack beats three opponents on the boundary and dishes to Martin by hand, who shimmies his way to in front of the goal square – serves Birchall with a ferocious ‘don’t-argue’ and goals to end the quarter. Desperation, aggression and brilliance all in the space of 20 seconds. H 31 R 12.
Pattern set early – Hawks are not going to give up possession easily. Their kicking brilliance is matched by the intensity of their work rate – running hard through the midfield and leading hard to designated spots - making maintenance of possession look easy. Their defensive transition is almost instantaneous. Hodge and Rioli are starring.
For the Tigers we are stuck in the Hawks forward line and cannot seem to get any cohesive movement of the ball forward. Astbury is doing well on Roughie and Griffiths has done some good work on the wing marking and sending long, really long, bombs into the forward line. Jack is lively but our only real forward marking target.
Leading possession winners are Hodge with 11, Mitchell and Cotchin with 10 and Lewis and Burgoyne with 9. Inside 50 entries the Hawks lead 17-9.
Second quarter
Hawks get on the board quickly with a Hale goal after a brilliant marking shepherd from Roughead. H 37 R 12. Hawks are winning the clearances 12 to 8.
After 4 minutes Richmond have had all the play in their forward line for no reward but are much more committed to the ball and the tackle so far. After 5 minutes Chaplin takes a nice intercept mark and hits Jack with a long bomb to the pocket. Jack gets into a yakking contest with Lake as to where the mark is and pots a point. H 37 R 13.
By the 13 minute mark we have had 74 % of the possession count in our forward half and have scored only a behind for our efforts. The boys are having a real dip. The tackling is fierce from both sides. But skill and decision errors are costing us.
Lewis hits the post for the Hawks after Hodge intercepts an Edwards handball. With 10.23 on the clock it’s H 38 R 13.
At the 8.35 mark the Hawks get one through Puopulo who gets goals side of 4 Richmond defenders and receives it with a paddock in front of him. Hodge had it 3 times in this passage of play and shows why he is such a damaging player. H 44 R 13.
We are leading the tackle count by 6 – 30 to 24 but the Hawks have 16 spoils to our 11 – mainly due to our high ball delivery style into the forward line. We’re making it easy for them.
With 5 and a half to go we produce our best passage of play - Vlaustin takes a dash, draws a contest at CHB handballs to a streaming Ellis who drills it long to where Jack has beaten Gibson on the lead. Jack hits money from 40 metres. H 44 R 19.
One last rushed behind to Hawthorn with about a minute to go and we go in 26 points behind 45 to 19. But we have found some momentum and have shown some real ticker and appetite for the physical challenge.
Leading possession winners are Ellis 16, Grigg and Cotchin 15 apiece. Hodge and Mitchell have 18 for the Hawks. Hawthorn lead contested possessions 76 to 65, uncontested possies 150 to 118, disposal 219 to 180, clearances 20 to 15, inside 50’s 26 to 21, marks inside 50 9 to 3, handballs 109 to 82 and kicks 110-100. We lead the tackle count 39 to 33 and the marks 54 to 52.
Third Quarter
The Hawks get two quick goals in a minute and a half after the break – a brilliant front and square rove and snap to Rioli and a mark in front to Hale – to really put the Tiges under the pump. H 57 R 19.
A rushed behind to us at the 18.00 minute mark and we’re behind by 37. Amazingly the stats show us almost neck-and-neck in clangers.
A very promising passage of play of linking handballs is spoilt by Cotchin’s delivery to Jack on the forward flank. Out on the full. Cotchin’s having a bad day – making conspicuous and damaging errors all over the park. He looks to be trying too hard.
Martin rushes a Hawk behind and it’s H 58 R20.
Around 15 minutes left Jack gets out the back of Gibson into space and tries a dribbler on the left foot from a tight angle. Point! He’s beating Gibson fair and square and showing all his tricks – this effort deserved better. H 58 R 21.
Soon after Vlaustin and Conca tandem for some very nice linking play through the middle only for Conca’s entry kick to be picked off. Houli gets one to Jack on the 50m line who handballs to Martin running past. Out on the full! Luck has deserted us.
In general play, Astbury has been very solid on Roughead. One of his best displays for the Tiges.
With 12 and a half left Rioli intercepts a Petterd handball in front of goal and drills a major. H 64 R 21.
A nice 1-2 play between Ellis and Edwards down the middle results in an Ellis shot from 50. But again – it’s only a behind.
McDonough substitutes Lloyd out of the game at the 10.00 minute mark. Lloydy has had no real influence on things and is a fair target for substitution – but then so could 10 other players.
Ellis goals from a 50m penalty. Finally we get a major! H 64 R 28.
Vlaustin makes a brilliant run through the middle and puts it out for Jack to mark at 40m and on a 45 degree angle. No surprise to see another point registered. H 64 R 29.
The Hawks pile on the next six goals whilst the best we can do is a point to Gordon. The quarter ends H 94 R 30.
Fourth Quarter
The Tigers kick the first two 6 pointers of the last quarter! Jackson to Jack followed by Ellis to Jackson. It's H 94 R 42.
Bruest quickly gets one back from a centre break and it’s H 100 R 42.
Jack tackles Gibson in the forward pocket and Gordon gets the point and Hill follows shortly with a beautiful running goal to the Hawks. H 106 R 43.
Cotchin is a bit more active this quarter but has been well held by Langford. Martin was switched to the half back line and Vlaustin to the middle in the third quarter and it’s a move that is working well. Both are contributing effectively – if not spasmodically.
At 10.30 a streaker (fully clothed, Richmond jumper) bursts out of the crowd in the back pocket and gets as far as the back flank. Has a bit of dash about him but then seems confused and to have forgotten his strategy for getting to where he was going. I won’t say the obvious.
Another point to Jackson after he retrieves a spilt ball from a slipping Gordon has us at 44 and the Hawks at 106 with 9.40 on the clock.
Two goals to the Hawks by the 8 and a half minute mark and you can sense that the Hawks are easing off a bit.
In the meantime, McDonough takes a nice grab in the back pocket; Conca goes back bravely and is pole-axed by Gibson who is reported – wouldn’t surprise if Conca misses next week with concussion, it was a nasty hit; McDonough goes on a nice weaving run and grabs another well timed mark.
Six minutes of solid junk time sees Petterd add another goal and point and the game mercifully ends. It’s the Hawks by 11 goals – 118 to 52.
The Tiges have been out classed and out worked. But there are positives – not the least that we didn’t give up. Astbury, Ellis, Conca, Jack and Jackson had good games. Arnot, Lloyd and Gordon got another game under their belts and so did McDonough – who had some very nice cameos pieces in his time on ground.
