MATCH REPORT
by SkillzThatKillz
HURT. That is the word that was emblazoned on a poster appropriately coloured yellow and black on the way out of the change rooms before the ramp to the MCG ground a decade ago. Each player would touch the poster with their hand on the way out to the ground prior to the start of each match and the 3rd qtr. The HURT encompassed the feelings of the players/supporters/coaching staff after being a bottom dweller for so long along with the ridicule from other teams and other teams supporters for our lack of competitiveness and success.
After a disappointing loss to the Gold Coast Suns in round 1, the Tigers bounced back with a swings and roundabouts win against Carlton. With a 1-1 record and the round 3 game against the Western Bulldogs who the Tiges had 2 x very good wins against in 2013, there was cause for a renewed sense of optimism that the Tigers would enter round 4 with a 2-1 record.
Unfortunately best 22 players Brett Deledio and Shaun Hampson were out injured. Nathan Foley was dropped and in came Nathan Gordon for his Tiger debut, along with Daniel Jackson and Orren Stephenson.
Richmond started well with Cotchin starting up fwd and taking a contested mark 40 m from goal, kicking truly within the 1st minute of play. Unfortunately the Dogs kicked the next 4 goals of the quarter with Liam Jones kicking 2 of them. Dustin Martin snapped one towards the end of the qtr however the Dogs kicked another to lead 34-16 at the first break. With Martin and Cotchin kicking our only goals in the 1st qtr, it highlights how important it is to rotate these guys up fwd with their relevant skillsets.
Richmond only kicked one goal in the 2nd quarter through the ever improving Ben Griffiths after taking a strong mark up forward before the Dogs kicked 4 more goals to lead 59-22 at half time. Nick Vlastuin was subbed off in the 2nd qtr with concussion with Nathan Gordon getting his first run in Tiger colours!
Richmond were run all over by the Dogs in the first half with the tables turning for the 2nd half.
Richmond outscored the Dogs by 12 goals to 6 in the 2nd half. After having his quietest half of footy in his career with 0 possessions, Jack Riewoldt kicked 4 goals in the 2nd half with his last putting the Tiges in front with a few minutes to go. Vickery kicked 2 of these and Griffiths kicked one of the best goals in the match from a tight angle outside 50, again highlighting his flexibility and importance within the team. Gordon kicked his first goal in the yellow and black in the 3rd term.
Unfortunately a 2nd goal by super sub Daniel Giansiracusa in the dying moments of the match ended Richmond’s hopes of getting the 4 points with a second disappointing result for the Tiges in the early stages of the season.
Jackson McRae from the Dogs was the BOG for me – he is going to be a star this kid and was everywhere over the ground and kicked a good goal. Cotchin was very good and missed a few shots at goal that he would normally convert.
Negatives
Biggest negative for me was our poor unforced turnovers. What is worse is that they seem to be committed by players who usually make the right decisions on the field ie Troy Chaplin. No doubt he will bounce back. With the close result it shows that if we can reduce the amount of turnovers then we can win these close games.
Positives
The biggest positive for me was that we were able to run out the game quite well, although I believe this is partly due to the Dogs not being able to do so. 12 goals to 6 in any half of footy is a good result.
The other positive for me was the continuing improvement of Ben Griffiths who took a number of contested marks and kicked 2 goals. He will allow the club to stretch opposition defences this year and his ability to assist with ruck duties with good overall skills is a bonus.
Nathan Gordon was another positive for me. Did a bit over the ground, kicked a smart goal and is deceptively quick for his body size. Can take a good mark too. Proud of his Tiger debut as his PRE President and look forward to seeing him play some full senior matches.
I gave the following votes for the match :
3 – Cotchin
2 – Griffiths
1 – Riewoldt
Just a little bit of trivia, during the match one of the Fox commentators spun out Rosy’s line of “Fortune favours the brave” after one of Riewoldt’s mark and goals.
So with a 1-2 record and up against Collingwood also with a 1-2 record, Friday nights match against the Pies will be our most important game since our Elimination Final loss last year.
During the week, Terry Wallace stated on SEN that the reason why Richmond lose such games is because they play with ‘Emotion’, which allows other teams to bounce back when Richmond get a certain point in front and is otherwise the cause of us getting bogged down in games. I say stuff you Terry, emotion can be quite powerful if used correctly and IMO it is the reason why we had a successful year last year finishing 5th out of 18 teams.
Getting back to the first paragraph of this report, I believe we need the return of the HURT poster. The pain felt by all associated with the club after losing against Carlton in that final last year needs to be felt and recalled more often by the players. The same HURT felt by the players after the Dogs game (though not to the same extent) needs to be remembered before our players go out to the field each time they play and I think it is more important for us as supporters/members to see our players touch the HURT to remind us that they are playing with this in mind.
Our season isn’t over yet.
We can bounce back.
Stick it up Wallace.
Eat ‘em alive Tiges!

Thanks to Skillz for another great match report. Summed it up well and nailed the positives and negatives of the match.
No surprises to see Trent Cotchin voted the best Tiger afield for his 4 quarter effort. He looked like he was going to tear the game open in the first quarter. Too bad his goal kicking boots deserted him. That opening mark, pictured above, was a beauty though. Big Ben Griffiths was also prominent in the ballots this week and he has really started to look comfortable out on the field. Perhaps patience was all that was required, but his ruck work, his contested marking and that thumping goal at a crunch moment in the game bode well for his season. Interestingly, Jack also featured prominently in the ballots. Not bad for a half of footy, but what a half it was. It was great to see the competitive streak return from Riewoldt and he was the number one reason we ended up with a contest by the end of the match.
Disappointing to lose by a couple points, but we got what we deserved after failing to show up until half time.
Friday night footy tomorrow against the Pies is now a crunch game for the Tigers. 2-2 is far better than 1-3 and we will have to overcome our recent poor form against Collingwood to achieve it. It's a hard game to tip and I won't be surprised whatever the result. The return of Hampson is critical to our chances and it will be good to see Biscuits wreaking some havoc through the midfield.
Carn' the Tiges!
