Team Culture....where do you get it?

BTW,

Tim Watson's key flaw was that he went from playing, straight to media, straight to a senior coaching role.

He missed out on the vital foundation experience of Assistant Coaching.

Like Blight, in his first stint at North, and many others before and after.

Tim's reluctance to give it a 2nd go also raises the question relating to his real desire, hunger, for coaching.

I reckon the best team with a stable positive minded club (not team) culture is Essendon. Stable coach (Sheedy), stable players, stable finances, stable number of members every year.

I always notice a positive vibe from most Bomber supporters I know and also from the players. They've had some low years but for a very short period and have the ability to step up again as we've seen with Knights.

Team culture is something that can be attributed to these key areas :

hard work
discipline
dedication
training
working together
passion
team spirit
setting competitive team goals ( i call these non-negiotables )

To develop a WINNING CULTURE is about EVERYONE being on the same page from the president down to the players is developing an environment of EXCELLENCE.

A winning culture is something that comes from within a club. Its not something that can be manufactured or come from outside. It comes from the team ( captain , coach , down to the rest of the players). They own it and should all be part of it.

Clubs that are successful or have been successful develop a mentality of " this is how we do it here ". To succeed this needs to be broken down. It is something that has been missing from the club for over 2 decades.

They all need to be committed to be the best, to speed up this process and the team progressess because everyone is on the same page.

There has to be respect of the past , the great performances of past players , premierships . But current players need to strive to be part of the present and future of this great club. They all need to be committed to achieve this. Any break of this link and the chain is broken, hence why the disease of this club has gone on for so long.

This team needs to have a clear vision is what i am leading too.

" this is what we want to do, this is where we want to go, this is what we want to achieve "

There has to be clear values , standards and behaviours set when the new coach is appointed and at the start of the next pre season these are to be adhered too. This is what will set us apart from the pack and can lead us up the ladder and achieving sustained success.

This can be turned around QUICKLY . Its all in the MIND and in the WANT.

:clap :clap :clap SPOT ON

This is a marketing flash from the open section of our website that we use to explain how cultural development occurs.

The theory applies to all, even if it has MLQ plastered over it.

Anyway, the flash adds a visual element to the theory.

Probably.

But if Blight had given up after his first stint at North in the early 80s, you would have said the same thing.

A yes.

"Focus On Positive Confidence."

I like to think that these few words helped a group of U14 boys, in some small way, win a premiership.

Quite a few years ago there was a group of U12 Mackie boys. They didn't know each other, they didn't have much in common. It was hard for them even to get along with each other.

That first year they won only one game for the season, the last.

Over the next couple of years, as they developed, they got better.
But even in their U14 year, even though they were the best side in the comp, their internal problems and blow ups put a likely premiership at threat.

The critical point was about 5 weeks before the finals, the boys were 2nd or 3rd placed on the ladder.
The President of the Association had come down to their training session to tell them that their on field behaviour had better improve or the Association was about to kick their bottom big time.

That evening at training the boys took a vow together.
They put their hands together and said that for the remainder of the season they'd work together to go after a premiership.

It was then that I put together "Focus On Positive Confidence" as a simple message that the U14 boys could relate to.

The boys won the last H&A game of the season, against the top team by a handful of runs, to secure 2nd place.

They played the top team again in the Semi-final.
The Semi Final was enormous.
It was down to the last over, the top team was 9 wickets down, needing 2 runs to win.
The captain chose his "leggy" to bowl the last over.
First ball, the batsman swung & missed but was still in his crease.
Second ball, the batsman swung again, missed, keepers took off the bails, out, stumped.
It was enormous.

During the preliminary, all the boys went down to watch the game to analyze both teams strengths & weaknesses.
The boys were going to face the top team again.

The GF was played in +35 degree heat.
On the first day, they restricted the the opposition to 150.
On the second, they got off to a slow start but had their wickets in hand.
A greater than 100 run partnership for the 4th wicket in 15 overs put the game within reach. The lower middle order got them there by about 3 or 4 wickets. The biggest margin of the 3 games, played by the same two teams.
Our boys won all 3.
But it was damn close.

I remember taking the whole team to the Oakleigh Swimming Pool where they spent the rest of the day in the water.

Yep, Focus On Positive Confidence.
sorry phanto but you can focus on positive confidence all you like but if the cattle aint capable of winning in the first place its all pointless.
cattle people cattle.

The leaders are by far and away the ppl that can influence a club the most

IMO the two currently at the club that can have a big say in where the club goes culture wise are Benny Gale and Cotchin. obviously our next coach will be a big influence as well

Culture is developed from the top down.
Heard tonight that Cotch was a smart alec but clever in Year 9, from his former teacher. Now that is a bit of useless information for you...
