Team Culture....where do you get it?

7-Eleven? ???

No, it has to be re-created in our case by great players; great coaches; great administrators and great supporters. We've only got 2 out of 4 so far (being the latter two).

It'll happen as soon as the mix is gotten right. Firstly a truckload of players need to go. The spirit and attitude of Jale King is fine, just need to be a much better and more skilled player. Takes nothing to try your guts out though. So many players on our list have talent, but don't bust a gut to be the best they can be (at least from my observation).

The leaders are by far and away the ppl that can influence a club the most

IMO the two currently at the club that can have a big say in where the club goes culture wise are Benny Gale and Cotchin. obviously our next coach will be a big influence as well

Culture is developed from the top down.

Leadership both on and off the field, self-belief, teamwork, a desire to win, determination, an understanding of the history of the club, pride, respect, innovation, loyalty, ownership, no-excuses, friendship, responsibility, a desire to learn, the ability to go above and beyond what is expected, not wanting to disappoint, no fear.

Seriously I could go on and on here. Having played in successful sporting teams and not necessarily having the best individuals, the culture of the club was to always go that extra yard. We often talked about the history of the club, the players who came before us and the responsibility we had as custodians of the club to not let down those players who came before us, our supporters and future players who would desire to play for our club.

Didn't St Kilda just flick a switch at the start of this year and all of a sudden have team first/individual second culture?

Milne and Del Santo two classic examples of culture turnarounds, with no real effort, apart from a change of mindset.

Team culture is something that can be attributed to these key areas :

hard work
discipline
dedication
training
working together
passion
team spirit
setting competitive team goals ( i call these non-negiotables )

To develop a WINNING CULTURE is about EVERYONE being on the same page from the president down to the players is developing an environment of EXCELLENCE.

A winning culture is something that comes from within a club. Its not something that can be manufactured or come from outside. It comes from the team ( captain , coach , down to the rest of the players). They own it and should all be part of it.

Clubs that are successful or have been successful develop a mentality of " this is how we do it here ". To succeed this needs to be broken down. It is something that has been missing from the club for over 2 decades.

They all need to be committed to be the best, to speed up this process and the team progressess because everyone is on the same page.

There has to be respect of the past , the great performances of past players , premierships . But current players need to strive to be part of the present and future of this great club. They all need to be committed to achieve this. Any break of this link and the chain is broken, hence why the disease of this club has gone on for so long.

This team needs to have a clear vision is what i am leading too.

" this is what we want to do, this is where we want to go, this is what we want to achieve "

There has to be clear values , standards and behaviours set when the new coach is appointed and at the start of the next pre season these are to be adhered too. This is what will set us apart from the pack and can lead us up the ladder and achieving sustained success.

This can be turned around QUICKLY . Its all in the MIND and in the WANT.

I remember hearing of Hawthorn in the period of 79-82ish that the administration had a philosophy that until they got everything right off the field, there could not be an expectation of on field success. They led from the front off the field, set the examples, created the culture and the success followed. Richmond has had some shocking administrations over the past 25 years and that has flowed through the whole club. We finally have some off-field leadership and by keeping their heads down and just getting the job done, success has flowed off the field from that. The next few years will be telling at the club as we see if our football department can now take the administraion's lead and instill the same discipline and create the onfield culture required. Benny Gale, Craig Cameron, the new coach and Newy have huge roles to play.

If the new coach thinks a training camp in Mildura for five days will change the culture and mindset of the players we are in trouble.

I will be watching the plans for the pre-season closely.

These players need a month or two in the Himalaya's (or on the Tiges budget, in Isolation at Mt Buffalo) with no distractions in order to achieve a mental re-build, not physical.

If they just do drills and skills, that wont cut it either. Remember when Angelo Lekkas went to do some mental and physical training with monks? He came back a very different player. We need quantum leaps in mental and physical development in these players. Tom Hafey would understand.

Changed BEHAVIOUR leads to Changed ATTITUDE leads to Changed CULTURE

It is not just the Football Department or The Players that have to change behaviour - it is every aspect of the club from fans to supporters to members to the staff to the board.

From that will come the Tigers late 1960's early 1970's ATTITUDE of we were born to win we were born to lead

And that then becomes the norm for the Club's CULTURE.

WE HAVE TO BUILD FROM THE FOUNDATION
WE AS SUPPORTERS MUST ACCEPT NOTHING LESS THAN VICTORY FROM OUR PLAYERS AND FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT
none of this he's alright - he had a go - he'll be better next time.
Plus
any faction fighting must be stamped out and we must all be as one with one sole objective A PREMIERSHIP

I listened to a very good interview with Gary March on 774 on Saturday.  Although I can't remember exact quotes he alluded to us having a blame mentality as well as a culture of losing.  Whilst that's understandable, and only seems natural after such an extended period of mediocrity, it doesn't help us in any way.

Everyone involved with the club needs to do their bit in some way, although I'm not sure how, to change from blaming the past to embracing the future.  It's easier said than done.  I am lucky enough to remember an era when we thought it was our right to win and look out anyone who got in our way.  We seem to lie down too easily now.

Changing our culture-

1) I would love Tommy Hafey to address the team, especially the new kids each year.  Let them know our history and the sacrifices that need to be made to achieve success.  I've heard Tommy address local footy clubs and they've run out with a whole new belief and attitude afterwards.

Tommy is a very inspirational person and a valuable resource for our club that's going to waste.

2) One thing I think needs changing is gifting games to players.  No matter what their name, pedigree or experience every player on the list needs to earn their spot.  Unfortunately that hasn't, for various reasons, been the case for way too long.

I reckon there would be far more respect for the jumper if the 2 above suggestions occurred.

Yep the new coach will be vital in changing the culture. Got to weed out the individualist mentality.

success. win some games and you'll get some culture. draft alot of talent through the draft, develop them, get a decent coach and you'll start winning games. this is what we struggle to understand and wonder why our culture is stuffed. you can't win games with ordinary players. cattle first.

Exactly. All the winning culture in the world won't turn below average players into good players.

thats *smile* Harry and Disco

History shows and is littered with stories about underperforming, undersized, underskilled teams/people rising against larger, more skilled and more experienced teams, armies etc

what you need is a group of people that learn to believe in each other, trust each other and will do whatever it takes to beat the opponent

get fitter, stronger and start thinking about scarificing yourself for the betterment of the team and you will find success

strive for excellence and dont accept mediocrity by anyone regardless of their age, history or level of seniority

there is not much difference between teams that are 16th and 6th at the moment and once a team starts to believe this then they can take the next step to break into the top 6

one thing for sure is you cannot train old dogs new tricks, the new culture has too start with the under 30s, then anyone that doesnt fit the mold is turned over, get em young and brainwash them early with discipline, hardness and teamwork - thats culture

Agreed. Well said.

Geelong had a team of skilled stars, yet it was only when they had their "home truths" sessions, and stopped playing like individuals and started playing like a team that they became a success.

That wasn't about skill, that was all about culture
