Talkin’ Tactics 2020

1-2-1 after four rounds.

not ideal, especially in a short season.

we are fundamentally at a disadvantage with the shorter quarters. going back through the majority of our wins 2017-19, they were grinders. rarely emphatic in terms of belting. more comfortable wins that were modest but somehow inevitable.

moreover, changes to personnel has taken away from our identity.

who are we in 2020? Ellis is gone, Rioli and several others are out of form. our core runners look well below their best, and that’s a critical failure.

finally, if our core runners fail to work both ways, our forwards are left to look mighty silly. Jack, in particular, looks jaded. Slow. It’s about time we used him differently. But more on that in a second.

2020 will slide away from us very, very quickly if we don’t do something significant to wrest back momentum. If I was Damien Hardwick, I’d consider a change in tactics. If I was Dimma, I’d look at those short quarters, and the way others have been winning, and look to play classic footy. Centre clearances and stoppages, control the air ball both ways.

what does this mean personnel wise?

two rucks and the gruntiest midfield roster we can muster.

Nank and Soldo fighting like dogs to give us first use.

Cotchin, Martin, Prestia, Ross, Graham, Higgins, Edwards.

constantly put pressure on the oppo miss through first use. This is a complete turnaround to how we normally roll out.

the turnover game as we know it is dead, at least in 2020.

key priority now should be first use. Failing that, we should be looking to stop wasting resources in winning the ball back through frenetic grind.

we should win it back in defence, through aerial superiority. Grub, astbury, vlastuin and the rucks.

Midfield wise, get in tight specialists and stop sweating on the spread. Get the *smile* thing first and send it long if space is denied.

I would play lynch and CCJ/Balta along with Caddy and Riewoldt as flankers. Send it in quick and long to the hot spot to exploit 6-6-6 and pile on scoreboard pressure.

can you imagine how jack might appreciate being played as third tall?

Nank/Soldo can drift back as required or provide wing options. Our strongest wins last season came when they were performing these roles.

importantly, I don’t think our grinding game, founded as it is on endurance, pressure and meticulous preparation is gonna cut it in this chaotic, disjointed season. What you appear to need this season is strong ballistic footy from the outset. That’s never really been our go 2017-19.

I also think the players would appreciate a change of direction. A freshener. They’ve worked so hard that I reckon they deserve a change-up. Doesn’t need to be forever. Every year brings a new campaign, a new challenge to overcome.

In many ways footy in 2020 is like playing in a telephone box. Congestion wise and also with the shorter quarters.

play the talls. Give away the expansive grind that will not work in 2020.

surprise the oppo like we did in 2017.

except this time we have a premiership roster to work with.
Great post and thought provoking. No idea why we are not playing Soldo and Nank. Perhaps Chol showing form gets a game as he had adds versatility. Anything would be better than watching broad or kmac getting towelled up in the centre.

Clearly our line up is not suited to the shorter quarters and adjustments are required.

Lots of the above to be honest.

Pressure way down.

Skill levels not near where they should be.

Shorter quarters mean the grind 'em down game is not so effective.

Backline has held firm early in quarters over the last 3 years allowing us to come over the top late in the quarter and this is not happening at the moment.

We need to have a serious look at how the shorter quarters have changed the game, but we also need to get the skills back, more support around the ball, 2 rucks and a bit more height all round.

The team needs a fresh look. There is a smell of staleness about it.

A further injection of youth. Our backline which has been our pillar of strength looks tiresome. Teams are making us defend one on one. They are separating us and taking away the goal keeper play of Grimes.

And now we are finally missing Rance. So let’s fill it with the next best thing - Balta. No point hiding him in these scratch matches. He has the speed and aerial prowess that we need.

And for the love of God play two rucks.Let’s have a look at a Nank / CCJ combo. Or stick in Chol for that unpredictability.

IMO the season is dead. That doesn’t mean our premiership window is closed. But we need to make some changes.

Turnover game ain’t dead . RFC practice winning the ball back from turnover each training session. Fact ! All clubs do . Problem we have is that offensive play is terrible . We have no separation at all from Jack and Tom . We repeatedly kicked to outnumber players repeatedly
There is the problem. We don’t get enough numbers forward of the ball . Interesting with the change of assistant coaches hey
We actually win the ball back from turnovers good at present , it’s what’s happens from there
Perfect example is Dusty’s kick last night into the corridor in 3rd Q ‍♂️

I tell you what i reckon whats happened.
The players have hit a brick wall.
The Road runners have to turn to Turtles.
The Great wall of the Defence is Paper thick.
Our forward line has more holes then a golf course.

Houli, Rance and maybe jack (he should consider it) will not be there next year.
Its time to renovate the joint.
We have been Kings of the comp for a good 3 years.
Its time to climb down the mountain, and start a new dawn.
We have kids that will rejuvenate the side.

Zips 5 year plan.
Cotchin to go half back.
Trade out Rioli.
Retire Jack Houli Rance.
Keep chasing Crouch
Have a look at Wines

Our 2021 team.
B. Short Astbury Big V
Hb. Cotchin Grimes Broad
C. Edwards Martin Dow
F. Pick 7 Cj Higgins
FF new Rioli Lynch Bolton
R. Nakas Crouch Prestia
Inter from Cumberland Martin CD Stack Baker Balta Ross

Mindfulness is/was big at the club.
There are several articles kicking around about the downsides of the practice.
If the head isn't right, the body is not going to follow.
That's what I'm seeing.

Have we ever been a 'skilled' side?
We were for 3 years a pressure based side. We fed off opposition mistakes.
The crew that forged the pressure have all fallen into a hole.
Castagna no influence
Lambert Mr Invisible
Lynch & Jack, are there 2 other forwards in the comp slower?
Prestia & Martin have booked holiday's in October.
Big V and Grimes aren't cutting off the opposition ball because there's no pressure on the opposition player bringing in the ball.
Edwards, Rioli and Stack have gone backwards.
We haven't got any depth in the midfield, its Martin or nothing.
Maybe its time for Hardwick to look for the new Generation.
We properly need 4 to 5 new faces to reinvigor our game.

Yes, totally agree with the pressure comments. We have been out pressured by hawks and now saints 2 weeks in a row. Unfortunately pressure/intensity/ferocity (call it what you will) is all correlated back to hunger/motivation/will to win. That’s gone! We need Apollo Creed to re-Instill “the eye of the tiger” back into the current millionaire lifestyle we are living as the world champion Rocky!

Apollo creed got destroyed by Ivan Drago.

We need puff n stuff back in our side.
They dont look happy anymore

We are like the Rocky who fought Clubber the first time. We need the eye of the tiger back quickly.

Yeah it is infuriating watching us continually kick the ball to an outnumbered contest in the opposition’s favour. It’s just madness but we do it time after time after time................

We are playing really dumb football at the moment. Nothing like a premiership team.

I keep seeing
* kicks long to an outnumber
* short kicks and handballs easily cutoff
* fumbles and hesitation and second guessing
* missed kicks n handballs
* stagnant ball movement (tho we were better agnst saints)
* missing in action - link players such as Dion and Lambo, even Rioli.
*missing are small leadup forwards such as George.

It is happening to too many players to blame individuals. Have all of them lost focus and touch?? No, its a tactical problem

It feels like the opposition have found the zone setup to stop our ball movement.
No switches. No over the top and out the back.

It started to come today, but only by winning the contest and we were often intercepted, far more than normal.
And more short kicks. Though mostly this results in slow forward entries and easy turnovers.

We are getting to the right spots but so are they. And we are smaller and lighter.
Speed doesnt help us.

twitch fibre is king in the new game.

Im not throwing the baby out yet, but I think the short game marginalises the big engine grinders.

Lambert exhibit A. crouch brothers exhibit B

and favours the impact players

Dan Butler is probably your Covid AA forward pocket right now - impact

(why isn't George in Covid AA form?)

and the same qualities of Dimmas that delivered us 2 flags, inflexible adherence to process, won't work in Covid footy.

Change. Select for freshness, enthusiasm and impact. burst.

Marlion Pickett as been brutalised. GF hero, to unable to pay his rent to being used in THE RUCK at 183 and in game 4.

Grigg had a few hundred games and 190. FFS

play Marlion and let him dance. Give him the dusty free pass.

and play Mabior too

First thing is play to our strengths to many players out of position, Ross,Graham, Kmac,Stack.Yesterday Caddy was on Hill on the wing the coaching box should be embarrassed with that. The same with the second ruck role again getting exploited there again when so many options ,simple things they need to fixed.

For some reason we look unfit compared to other teams really struggling and you can see the game plan we play the players can't execute it.

Funny how all the talk was that older more experienced teams would dominate the covid season. So far young exuberance is smashing the I miss my family mob. It makes a lot of sense. The younger teams like gold coast are on extended scholies month killing it. Yes it looks to be about mindset but understandable. I just resigned from my job because I’ve had enough of being separated from my partner. I imagine a lot of players are dragging their feet through every session.

Thanks for the write up carter, I am not much of a tactics man but appreciate the time you put in.

Yeh, looks like dimma is obsessed with ‘play the game on our terms’ and ignoring certain realities ie caddy is slow, Ross is an inside mid, etc.

I personally don't think we need to over react. We have been forced into rushing the ball forward as our handball game hasn't been running as well.

If you break down the games, just from watching the Pies game we dominated pretty much the last 3 quarters and should have probably won, won the I50 count by 12
The Hawthorn game our skills let us down, again won the inside 50 count by 8. Tonight, similarly we won the I50 count by 1. The issue isn't that we aren't winning the ball, we have been ok, but the disposal coming out of winning the ball has not been at the level of the last 3 years. Some of the handballs we have delivered in the last 3 weeks, you wouldn't expect to see in Under 12's and as this is such a massive part of our game, it makes it really difficult to be able to get that good ball use going inside 50.

We don't need to tear up the gameplan, its not the gameplan that is failing, its the execution of our skills that is not enabling our gameplan to be executed at the level is should.

I haven't seen any team handle the ball as badly as we have for the last 3 games this year.
If you bring the ball slowly into a congested forward line it makes life impossible for the forwards.
