TAC Draw - 2009

No Sandy player impressed me yesterday. phantom, who were number 34 & 44. Number had 34 a good leap. As you can see, records are hard to get.

34 was Nathan Burnage, 198, 87. He rucked a bit.

44 was Ben Wilson, as said.

Gawn didn't impress you?

Article in todays Herald Sun on Scully, already being touted as a possible no 1 draft pick.

No doubt about Scully being an elite junior.

My only concern is that he doesn't kick as many goals as one would think he might.

Well, let's look at things after R6.

Gawn to me was a bit slow. I didn't think his ruck work was that good compared to the eastern boys. He can take a grab, and so he should given the height difference to the defended. his kicking for goal was ordinary. He might improve during the year.

Well, we've got most of the season to look at how he shapes up.
Nice to observe him, but we now don't need another 200+cm junior.
Got enough now - Graham, Putt, Vickery & Browne.

A bit sad to see we are talking about the draft already, but I guess it may help to pass the next 19 weeks a bit more quicky.

With Melbourne almost certain to record less than 5 wins they have the No.1 pick and Scully all tied up this year, even if we end up with the spoon.

Next 5 or so are fairly interesting. Key forwards in Butcher, Griffiths and Fitzpatrick are next in line together with Lucas and Morabito from WA.

If current form continues our first pick will come early and likely to be one of these.

anyone seen koby stevens of gippsland?? highly touted midfielder as well, already has a good build on him. AIS squad captain this year also

Yes, he played TAC last year.

Hmmm!
Rhys Boyden, 190cm, 84kg.
Not a giant. Must have some ability.
0 then 1 then 12 goals. Might have been a day out. Not much in his early two games.
Let's see how he continues.

Luke Mitchell, 195, 83, from St Bernards looks interesting too.

Saw 3 games yesterday at Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo.

1. The home team, Bendigo v the Dandenong Stingrays.
2. The Murray Bushies v Geelong Falcons
3. Finally North Ballarat v Gippsland Power.

Lovely day with footy played in a magnificent environment. The Bendigo people showed how well a multiple game day can be presented. Credit to them.

Those who arrived early were treated to a very high quality game.
Bendigo's midfield were the driving force in what would have been a big surprise for the Dandenong visitors.
I got to see arguably the best junior centre player in Australia, this year, and it wasn't Scully.

Dustin Martin (6), 185/85, kicks magificently and long on both feet. He gives great clearance drive out of the centre. Makes great position around the ground, and genuinely marks over his head. He is a centre player, in the pure sense. Kicked a lovely goal as well as providing many direct goal assists.

Scully (29), 182/75, also played very well, also has great skills, and puts himself into everything. I've seen Scully quite a few times over 3 years. My only criticisms are 2:
1. Because of the Stinger game plan, he generally plays wide and doesn't run through the centre.
2. He tends to hold himself upfield and rarely runs forward into inside50 with the ball, therefore limiting himself. But he's still a great junior.

Kallen Geary (9), 176/70, Jarryn's younger brother, is a top class 1st rover, created heaps of centre clearances and also kicked a lovely goal.

Shane Page (43), 183/72, kept running up and down the ground all game creating opportunity after opportunity, and ensuring he hit the target.

Daniel Jones (24), 181/78, played a very tidy role as a running half back and found an open target upfield with every kick.

Jaye Sandiford (33), 181/83, was the damage HF kicking 3 or 4 opportunist goals.

Any of these boys above, I'd love to see pull on a Tiger jumper at year's end, but to get either of Martin or Scully, well, we better not win many more games.

Of the others, Prockter (BP) & Pitt (DS) were the FFS for both sides and lacked a couple of inches. And Pitt is an "iffy" shot at goal.

Ryan Bastinac (3), 182/73, a highly rated player got alot of the ball and butchered it. I had more crosses than ticks against his name.

Jake Batchelor (22), 186/78, ran hard both on a wing and deep from defense, and did kick a good goal, but he also had alot of ineffective kicks. He's very young, 9/92, so should improve.

THe next game was a very high standard one considering the Bushies lost alot of players in last year's draft.
And I like the type of players Geelong are developing - tall, athletic with great footy skills.
Bushis has mostly smalls, with a handful of mobile talls, whereas Geelong had a generally tall mobile team.

Geelong won after a close finish. Geelong had more stars so I'll go with them first.

Ben Cunnington (30), 184/83, is the team key driver. He plays C, FF & sometimes HB. Sets up goals everytime he touches the ball, he's that good. But does lack endurance. The Geelong coach used his sparingly and got the most out of him. Also kicked 3 goals.

Allen Christensen (5), 175/75, is a first rover, crumbing pocket, tagger all in one. Strong build, bundle of energy & a very good kick. Kicked 3 goals too.

Zac Ledin (38), 181/75, used sparingly too. Used in the centre in the last quarter and was a key to Geelong's win with his drive. But didn't run forward with the ball, prefering to give it off.

Redhead Gary Rohan (48), 186/79, slipped in up forward with 4 goals in the 3rd quarter to set Geelong up for the last.

Thom Mackenzie (45), 191 (more 194)/85, was their kpp who played down back & up forward. I reckon the Footy Record is wrong because at 1/4 time he had a clear break in height against Thompson 191. And Holmer, listed at 190, is clearly 194/195cms.
Anyway, Mackenzie was their best pure kpp, mobile, marks & kicks well, and I was told thrashed Butcher (GP) last weekend. Mackenzie will be an AFL FB/CHB.

Luke Thompson (42), 191/85, played an excellent rebounding game with excellent kicking.

Jasper McMillan-Pittard (36), 185/68, long & skinny, played an excellent rebounding game off wing/bp.

For the Bushies,

Farran Priest (8), 171/74, was clearly the best player of the ground over the whole game, being everywhere, doing everything. Real Dale Weightman type rover.

Tim Segrave (28), 190/80, flew and marked repeadly on HF and kicked truly for 4 goals. He looks an exciting prospect but is unfortunately 2/92.

Brendan Allen (13), 186/79, looks an exciting type too, an overhead runner in the Bruce Tempany-mould, for those who can remember. Kicks the ball well too.

Taylor Duryea (4), 179/76, just kept plugging way in both a centre tagging role and rebounding from defense. Kicks long & accurately too.

Anthony Miles (5), 179/71, got alot of the ball in the centre but wasted it.

Sam Reid (16), 192/84, also took some nice marks up forward, but his kicking is unreliable.

Josh Hamilton (20), 195/90, worked hard but lacks enough class to be an AFL footballer.

Rosy, you asked about Brayden Norris. Not up to it. Not at this level. Scared to get the ball and doesn't think quickly enough when it's in his hands. Did kick one nice goal when he was on his own, about 30m out in front, on the run.

Finally, the last game, which was very close, and North Ballarat just kept in front of Gippsland to win by a goal.

Maybe it was me getting tired, but generally the final game was of a poor standard. I would've left at half time but I thought I'd give Josh Free the benefit of the doubt. It was a very scrappy game.

For North Ballarat,

Dean Gavin (4), 173/70, was the best player of the game and looked a very solidly built old-fashioned rover. But he made position excellently and always found a target. And kicked 2 goals as well.

David Astbury (5), 193/79, the Caulf Gram. junior highly recommended by Barry Rowlings, played an on the ball/running forward role and was disappointing.

Dylan Parish (22), 188/77, did some hard work at HF and kicked 3 or 4 goals.

Josh Free was a disappointment, just couldn't get into the game. Whether in the centre, out on a wing or tagging. Seems to lack a yard and lacks distance in his kicking. Handballs well though. And lacked endrance, regularly needing spells.
Hopefully his next game will be better.

For Gippsland,

John Butcher (5), can run, mark, jump, he can do eveything but kick. He has the worst kicking action I've ever seen. Worse than Nick Gill. With that said, he'll be the perfect replaement for Richo and Tiger supporters will love him.

He was sent off for misconduct in the 2nd qtr. The Gippsland team improved and took responsibility after Butcher left the ground. After veing substantially behind at half time, they almost stole the game, sans Butcher.

It was a disappointment, Butcher had kicking problems early last year but did improve. Yesterday, under good playing conditions, he has reverted to his poor kicking form.

Now I wouldn't touch Butcher with a ten foot pole.

Other gippsland players - Dessent (CHB), Golby, (OM), Weston (HF), came in and out of the game but their kicking was generally poor and marred many of their efforts.

It would seem their kicking, poor by so many, may reflect the time spent practising on it.

A lovely day, with lots of good footy in the first two games.

We'll see how Dustin Martin goes. I've only seen him one game. But in that game he was extremely impressive. Afterwards, I realised he got a big write up in the 2009 Prospectus, so he has shown this form earlier.

This is the 3rd year I've seen Scully, so I reckon I've got him pegged now.

On Butcher, well, unless he's tanking, there are great concerns that he's going to be as unreliable in front of goal as .....
Actually, reckon Richo has a better kicking action.
Maybe it was just the day, but he did the same through most of early last year.

Had a lovely Sunday afternoon watching the Oakleigh Chargers taking on a very keen NSW team.

The game was played in good conditions and the standard of the game was the same.
Oakleigh ran out narrow winners after a late "charge" (get it, Chargers) from the NSW team.

There were some interesting players on both teams.

For Oakleigh:
6. Stuart Johns, a 185cm, 83kg, from Blackburn, did well at FF. (Try to imagine a 185cm Jake King who can kick well.) Yes, Johns also did well in "roughing up" the NSW backs.
He had 5-1 at one stage but tired late in the game to finish with 6-4 as I recorded.
Could be good late pick up as a strong medium HF.

13. Pat McMahon, a 203cm, 80kg ruckman, from Greythorn, looks to have talent also.
He competed well at hit outs, took some nice marks around the ground, and kicked the ball well. Think he got a goal too. At this point, he lacks the physique to give a marking contest, but given time & conditioning ......

4. Jayden Hoegel, 175, 66, Whitefriars, a bit of a Foley type, with Foleys weaknesses.
Very good on his feet, finding alot of the ball, very creative, but isn't always effective in disposal. Is a genuine rover who can kick goals.

For NSW, two outstanding players:

17. Jeremy Kirkwood, 186, 77, from Queanbeyan, is very quick, gets a heap of the ball, and is very creative with it, though he did miss his target sometimes.

36. Aidan Riley, 181, 76, from Wollongong, also showed a heap of dash around the ground, and was also creative. Though he too missed targets. I'm told he's already been taken in the Sydney scholarship scheme.

33. Leroy Eggmolesse, 179, 71, from Wentworth (near Mildura) showed himself to be a lively high leaping small back pocket. Kicks the ball very effectively too.

Cheers!

We'll take him...where do I sign?
