Succession Plans - I don’t get it

Clarkson's time at Hawthorn is nearly done. They need a successor, and it should be a young up and comer. I've got no problem with the Hawthorn decision. Mitchell looks promising as an assistant, time will tell I guess.

I dunno if Clarko will hit premiership heights again but might be a good coach to make Collingwood or Carlton a contender again. Maybe.
Are they cleaning out their recruitment and trading guys?
They’ve done a terrible job so far

That may be what happens TF but the fact is Clarkson has a contract for 2022 and the hawks won't want to pay it out

I agree with some of the posters re the dangers of longevity at one club. The fact is that Clarkson's record from 2017 is not that flash and they refused to bottom out for a while which may or may not have been his call of course. 4 premierships is a stellar record for any coach and he will rightfully go down as one of the great coaches but i can't help but think he stayed at the hawks one contract too long.

Agree on longevity - I think about a decade is long enough and we are maybe seeing signs of that with Dimma now.

If Clarkson was offered a job by another club they'd negotiate a release without a payout I'd think.

It has made Teagues job the safest in the comp. He survives this year and gets swapped with Clarko at the end of next year. Meanwhile Pies pick up the dreg

And it's started already, heard/read that’s there’s “frosty” relations between Mitchell and Clarkson, that Mitchell didn’t even mention Clarkson in yesterday’s press conference. Hawthorn and Clarkson will have to endure this sort of speculation for the next 15 months. Who’d want that.

Clarkson (and Hawthorn obviously) haven’t won a final since their 2015 GF win. 6 years now.

Would not surprise me if Clarko ends up at Collingwood next season.

lol at Carlton. do they ever go through a thorough process when looking for a coach? They're either poaching an experienced coach (pagan, malthouse) or appoint someone within / caretaker coach (ratten, teague).

@year of the tiger , my view is the opposite. succession plans is a no brainer for mine. 18 years at one club is a long time. Sheedy stayed 5 years too long. Dimma will have coached at Richmond for 15 years by the time his current contract ends in 2024. By that time our era will probably close to the end and its unlikely he'll be around for a rebuild... So we should be looking to groom his successor then IMO.

Agree on the need to plan ahead which is what a succession plan.

I guess I just struggle with the concept that you have a master coach still there pulling the string with the anointed one there as well. It’s the overlap bit I struggle with - there are plenty of assistants who do their apprenticeship elsewhere and then when they are ready you hand them the keys.

Are they saying Clarkson still has one year left in him or Mitchell is one year short of training. Corporates do the understudy bit but I haven’t seen many examples where they sign a contract that guarantees they take over in 12 months - normally they are in line but without the guarantees.

That's true but they did win 16-17 H&A games in 2016 and finished top 4 so they had a decent year
Indeed, I was just pointing out that he and Hawthorn haven’t won a final in the last 6 seasons. I think that’s gone under the radar a bit.

let's hope it's similar to Malthouse/Buckley exchange. Collingwood worse for ware and Carlton going nowhere.

Sam Mitchell comes across as a bit of an arrogant campaigner.

Clarko effectively got tapped on the shoulder.

He owes them nothing, and I reckon he will walk at years end.

Mitchell off to a bad start with this IMO.

Basically, Hawthorn just sacked Clarkson, but made it look like it's a planned transition.
Of course it's signalled to Clarko he's done, so if he wants to go get another job, he walks out on his contract, not the other way around.
It's a great stage managed approach to not having to do a Sheedy - Knights transition. The public think it's got the best wishes of the outgoing coach as he's been the mentor. Just great PR for the club, and the new coach.

No coach could take that list to the finals in that period. Huge drop off in spread of talent, happens when you win 4 flags & trade out high picks for damaged goods (see Wingard, O'Meara, possibly Mitchell).

Practically no one likes Sam Mitchell. Though his jab gesture against Bombers was humourous. And his disdain for Jabba Watson after winning the Brownlow also raised a smile.

Even when he’s losing he’s winning - clarko the genius.
