1970/71 season.

It was held to appease ticket holders since almost the whole five days of the Test were washed out. (England won a specially scheduled Seventh Test in Sydney -- the John Snow incident Test -- and won the Ashes 2-0).

Correct, the old timers really didn't like the new 40 over a side game ( 8 ball overs I guess)

They said it would never take off

The safety reccomendations contained in the Taylor Report into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster precipitated the large-scale building of new football grounds in England as clubs left their old homes. Clubs had previously moved to other existing grounds due to financial difficulties, such as Charlton Athletic to Selhurst Park and Bristol Rovers to Twerton Park, but for several decades the only club to build and move to a new ground was Scun-thorpe United (hyphen to avoid swear filter ;D), who completed their new Glanford Park ground in time for the opening day of the 1988-89 season.

Before Scun-thorpe, which was the previous English league club to build and move to a new ground? Also please name the ground and the club's nickname.

(Hint: they're no longer there, they moved into another new ground a few years ago.)

No, the Lions were at the old Den for most of the last century before moving to the much-improved New Den  in 1993. Unfortunately their hospitable supporters went with them, and they had to make a further "improvement" by building a mesh enclosed footbridge to South Bermondsey railway station.

Wimbledon weren't even in the league when the move I'm looking for occurred.

The Dons left Plough Lane in 1991, a move that was the beginning of their decline.

Quiz afficianados:

Will be out most of the day due so no confirmation of answers until tonight. A further clue -- go looking in rugby league country, also known as Up North.

Incidentally Aldershot have risen from the ashes of their 1992 demise and as Aldershot Town are currently in the Conference, one division below the Football League. They even play at their old ground.
