If England wunderkind Theo Walcott plays in Germany he will still not qualify as the youngest player to play at a World Cup finals. Who does that honour belong to?

Junk Bonds is correct. Not far past his 17th birthday when he played for Northern Ireland in 1982. Pele held the record previously, and is still the youngest to play in the final itself (in 1958).

Whiteside was a very fine player but chronic injury exacerbated by chronic drinking caused him to retire at only twenty-four.
