Song/Albums that stir the emotions

I think the most interesting thing I saw once was MTV's Top 10 hits of all time, as of 2011.

The interesting thing was that 8 of their top 10 songs of all time were in fact recorded prior to the advent of MTV, ie prior to 1981.

It has been 30 years since 1981, MTV's advent, yet 8 of their top 10 songs of all time come from the 25 years before that.

BTW, if you are looking for something a bit different:

Maybe 'Teen Spirit' would be one. It would be an interesting list.

By Nirvana.

It may well have been one of the two.

Here's an MTV list that might be the one.

Its not quite the same but its the closest I could find in 60 seconds. Not a bad Top 100, except for all the songs I don't like, of course.

Yep, Smells Like teen Spirit was in there
and there were two others, Billie Jean, MJ, (1983) which is an interesting one, because his record label were in a huge battle with MTV at the time because they didn't play black artists. That was the first one they relented on. The third one you would never guess, well I would never have guessed it:

I want It That Way by the Back Street Boys ::)

Number 1 was Yesterday.

Yeah that was the same one I saw 70s, and there are 2 more post 81: Like a Virgin, and With or Without you. Thats 5 out of 10 post 1981. I dunno if this list is by biggest sellers or voted???

No, that wasn't the list shown.

It still supports the point, about half the songs are pre-MTV.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised to see "Baby, one more time" and "Ironic" so high.

Just tried to find Wallflower by Bob Dylan, one of my all-time favourites by anyone, but its not on Youtube. the one I have is on the Bootlegs 3CD set. I've been trying to get it on record for years, unsuccessfully.

One of my favourite concert memories was seeing Dylan at the Myer Music Bowl circa 1978.

My favourite of his, at the time, was his reggae version of Lay Lady Lay, off the Hard Rain album.
If I recall correctly, The Hearbreakers were his backing band.

Dylan was backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 1985 or 86. Lay Lady Lay was orginally on Nashville Skyline but the live version on the Hard Rain compilaation seemed to be his favoured treatment for awhile. They must have been great gigs, is that the tour the Budokan album came from?

 Holy sh!t - didn't expect to see Flower Travellin' Band here - Satori's an all-time classic in my book - Japan's psychadelic answer to early Ozzy-era Sabbath. :clap

I'm a fan too.

I was at the concert Phantom. Didn't see you there!

Time to stir some more emotions.

There are a number of excellent cover versions of this song. The Pogues do a particularly angry and aggressive version and Liam Clancy's brings a tear to the eye. Even Slim Dusty had a crack at it.

I think the best is the version by the man who wrote it, Eric Bogle.

not sure if anyone has put this song in, but surely it would be Un Australian to not be touched by this song

If you recall it was a torrential night, with lightening & rain.
I was sitting on the lawn area behind the reserved seating.
You may not have seen me because I had plastic above and below me.
I remember thunder sounding very close to the surrounding trees and people falling from the them.

Yes, it was a great night, Gee, this year 2012, it was 34 years ago. I was 17yo in my 1st year at Uni. It would have been around March or April, as I recall seeking permission to miss a Formative Examination at Uni to attend.

One of my most memorable concerts.
Others include:
Crosby, Stills & Nash at Hammersmith
Neil Young at Festival Hall
Dire Straits in Cardiff (Yes, it was the Alchemy concert, and I saw them another two times, one 6 months earlier, another 6 months later, at Festival Hall.)
2 x Status Quo concerts at Festival Hall
Steve Winwood at The Glasshouse (pre-Lexus Centre)
Peter Frampton / Cold Chisel at the Myer Music Bowl
The Stranglers at The Palais
Pretenders / Talking Heads at The Glasshouse (First concert I took my wife to.)
Oh, and of course, Springsteen at the Showgrounds.

Worst concert: Beach Boys, circa 1978/79, they just went through the motions.
