Anyone know anything about Home solar?

Hey there Michael. I have started investigating getting a photo voltaic system at a house I hope to be moving into soon :) I have spoken to a few people, and read a bit, so may be able to help with questions you have. But first, let me ramble...

  • A photo voltaic system is what you need in place to be able to feed power back onto the grid, and get money for it. I have read that the Vic (hope you live here) Govt is going to up the amount paid per kilo watt hour up to $0.60. Whilst this is still a fair way behind the leading nations, see Germany, it is the best rate in Australia.
  • The govt currently still has the, up to, $8,000 rebate on installation of photo voltaic systems - you get $1,000 per 'something' up to the $8k. I have been told that this $8k is for the 1Kw system, you can of course go to a 2Kw, or higher system, but the rebate doesn't get any higher for your added solar collection.
  • A guy at a solar installation place recons there is a fair chance the rebate rate could be dropping to $6k in the new financial year; whether this was true or just some sales non-sense I am not sure but either way it is something to keep in mind if you are looking at moving forward in the near future.
  • I have also been told that the Federal Govt will be starting up a 'Green Fund' that people will be able to borrow money from to pay for green systems eg Solar hot water/ photo voltaic system, water tanks, grey water systems etc. The guy who told me this also said that the interest rate will be set at a helpful 2% for repayments.

Well I hope that has helped a bit and if you have any specific questions I will try to answer :)

Ciao

P.S. You just have to love a good list ;)

Any mention of an annual cap on the number of households that can get the rebate K3?

None that has been mentioned Azza, but when I was told the Govt was looking at dropping the rebate to $6,000 it was because of the number of people taking up the offer and hence the Govt wanting to keep money in the coffers to keep it going a bit longer.

Thanks for this.
Finally an answer on topic

We are considering joining with a group of neighbours (its like a Travian Alliance) to install PV system in each of our houses
Apparently we can still apply for the rebate and get a better deal on the installation

I'm a bit at a loss as to what equipment will be installed
Cells on the roof, new metre etc
Do we need storage/batteries or does the excess power just go back down the main line?
