Mentioned in today's West (sorry, no link) that the Tigers have Shane Kersten in the mix for their first round selections. Supposedly will not go past pick 15.

Name: Shane Kersten
Club: South Fremantle, Western Australia
Date of birth: 15/3/93
Height: 191cm
Weight: 92kg

The Dockers will be spewing. They will pounce on him at 16 if available.

Kersten is a long kicking forward who apparently is a very good set shot for goal. Was considered unlucky not to have been nabbed by the Giants last year.

Streaker is he a lead up forward ? Looks like it in his highlights package. Good size and agility with a decent kick off the right foot.

Thought we were going mid ?

I'd say he is GEDS.

Only seen him once, in the Colts WAFL grandfinal. He kicked 5 goals including at least one monster from a long way out. I must say that in that game, he layed the type of role we sorely need to fill. Lead up to CHF a lot and roamed aound the HFF winning the ball.

He missed a fair chunk of footy this year through injury.

Interesting Streaker.
From the vision he certainly looks like a type we desperately lack. Really only have McDonald as a similar type and no guarantee there.
He was interviewed by every club at the combine except Adelaide so there's a lot of interest out there for him apart from Freo.

Will he last to 15 ? This is exactly the left field pick we come up with and he looks very Pavlich like. Maybe its him first mid second pick.

Streaker what are his outstanding attributes from your knowledge and what others are saying in WA ?

Through the first few games of 2010 in the Colts he was shaping as a very early pick. He got hurt and missed a lot of footy and by missing the Championships (and being in the West) he doesn't get mentioned in Kevin Sheahan press releases and leaks from the Essendon recruiting staff which is what counts as infomed opinion at this time of the year. Without missing footy he was thought to be a top-10 pick and getting back and playing well in the Colts GF might put him back there (on return from injury he kicked 24 goals in his last 5 games including the finals).

GWS, Port and Brisbane all have huge holes in their KPs, particularly forward. They will be very very fidgety about recruiting for need and there are probably no legitimate top-20 calibre big men outside of Patton and Longer. So Tomlinson, Kersten, Manson, Talia might all come into play before we pick.

Still think we go mid. At 26 maybe but at 15 I wouldn't call his name.

Think Brisbane or GWS take him so we don't have a shot.

Freo will definitely take him at 16 or 20 if we don't at 15, I'd say.

If he's anything like Jack Darling we should take him in a heartbeat.

With only Patton and Tomlinson as the only likely KP prospects, I'd be tipping GWS to pick him up. It would be a massive surprise to see him available at 15.

And even bigger surprise if we picked him at 15.

Kersten outplayed Darling last year in the same colts side. Apparently Kersten was much more athletic (under 3 sec in 20 metres, pretty big leap, etc), so injuries this year have definately kept him under the radar from the media

If he's a genuine CHF and available at pick 15 we'd be crazy not to snap him up.

Genuine CHF's are like Hen's teeth...

Actually, I wouldn't mind this guy at pick 15 if the first choice mids are already taken. He could give us very good depth in our tall forwards. Riewoldt, Kersten and one of Vickery/Griffiths woudl all be quite different players, forcing defences to make decisions about who they play where.

There should be good opportunities to get mids with picks 26 and 55. If we get McCarthy in the PSD and rookie a couple more midfield options that will give us good depth through the middle as well.

We could use a good lead up forward, esp a quick one.

Best available at 15 please.
Not sure in this case.

I agree that generally best available is sound strategy, more so when you have a high pick and it is a strong draft. But in this case, given every one is saying it is quite even apart from the first half dozen and we only have pick 15, I would think we should target our 3 picks on needs this time (as there may not be much difference in quality from pick 10-15 to pick 30 - 35).

I'm not so sure he could hold down CHF, he's more of a leading full-forward who probably would have revelled in the eighties and nineties. My only query with Kersten is whether his type are slowly becoming relics of the past. He's certainly not of the calibre of Darling who I believe is capable of playing anywhere on the ground, it really comes down to that leading forward role which is becoming increasingly less important these days. That's not to say they don't exist but clubs are deviating away from the predictable structures of the past. Is he worth spending a first round pick on? I'm not so sure, we've been down this path with Hughes and Limbach, do we really want to tempt fate a third time?
