Scratch Match v Hawks

RCD didnt really have a physical advantage in u18's, yeh he had a growth spurt, but also had puny noodle arms. Often played 'small' as he was still learning to play to his taller frame (jumping when handballing a perfect example)

Here is the official club player summary from scratch match v Hawks: Don't think I were too far off the mark :)

Word is X read your write-up to make sure he got it right.

I am saying it is 'IMPOSSIBLE' for Thomson Dow to be a bust he is too clean by hand , too good aerobically, and what I like most whilst he has a light frame very good in the clearances.

Ok yet to be tested against men and will certainly need to build up his strength but i want Thomson WOW in there NOW :D

Look I'm taking the *smile* out of Carlton with the wow comments.
Really appreciate your reports, JC. When I first saw Dow in action in his pre-draft vids, I posted something like - ' the next Shane Edwards.' He just reminded me so much of that rare player: sharp reflexes and anticipation , ability to read the game and where the ball is going, plus really quick hands with strong HB skill. Further pleased to see X comment in his report that he 's 'got great pace ' too. Hope my first impression stacks up.

But, Caesar, where do you think Oleg Markov is at? Like Mabs, it's probably this year or bust for him. Watched a little of the Pies V Saints game today. Couldn't help thinking why can't Oleg be utilised for us as the Mudpies use Stevenson. Similar types - speedy, fast-leading, long-kicking and reasonable overhead marks (if Markov can hold them; he certainly can burst out and get his hands to them).
I believe our FL needs to take a different look. Rioli out - maybe try Oleg (or Balta)?

I hope you're right Leon, ability to read the game and anticipate where the ball is about to go is so valuable.

Why not give him a try, shorter quarters could be good for a young player.

Thomson Dow wasn't expected to go in the top 30 by most scribes so hopefully our recruiters saw something others missed, and yes on draft night Matty Clarke likened him to Shane Edwards. Dow missed a lot of football in 2018 due to injury, he only turned 18 in October so an underager who hopefully has plenty of upside with his game and physical development, (looking good so far).
Interesting hearing X saying he has got great pace when at draft combine his 20m sprint of 3.06 seconds is about average, (although he does look quicker than that to me).
Where he did kill it was the agility test and vertical leap.

Re Markov, it is now his 5th year on the list so I can't really see a magical break out happening. He does have that great acceleration but I haven't really seen the agility, (twisting and turning), needed as a forward and not super clean at ground level. Forward lines are so crowded these days you rarely see players getting a clean run at it to be a hit up target.

Edwards esque with the clean hands in tight some have mooted

Good work Caesar.

Wont be too long before we get a look at TD I reckon which will have been expedited by our disgraceful return and inability or willingness of others to do whats required.

A Youthful spark might be a good addition with 2 or 3 other senior players.

Thanks for your considered response, JC. Firstly, I promise I never heard that Clarke said that - just my own observation. But if we have selected something like another Sheds, it will be an absolute coup at the Bloos' expense.
No need to reply again, but when I look at Stevenson being acclaimed for what he can do, I look at Oleg and think, he should be able to play similarly. I have seen him do so at VFL level last year when he was tried as a forward. Very similar physiques, speedy and can fly for a mark (holding them is the issue!). The gap isn't as wide in performance as some might expect, not at all. Maybe it is that lack of agility though.

Still would like to see us try something different. Other teams are playing 185-190 cm players on our SFs who, although good in the air for their size, cannot really be expected to avoid being out-marked often. While Jack and Tom seem to be just competing in a pack of talls at the top of the goal-square with a spoiled ball the usual result.

Thomson Dow in some mock drafts was listed as a 15 range pick right up to pick 40,but this draft was all.over the place and we definitely rated him as a mid teen pick.

Agree. Get Dow in the side.

Listened to Coaches Corner on RFC website with Richo and Andrew McQualter, when commenting on Scratch Match McQualter said the two standout performers were Thomson Dow and Riley Collier-Dawkins had a great game as well.

That’s good news, that two of our young guns are being recognised.

on what you've seen @caesar ,

and your on the MC, and we are a winger short this week,

do you bring in Naishy, or Dow?

I would bring in Kmac to run with Hill, Dow played 100% mid in scratch match not wing, if Dusty not right you could bring in Dow for Ross or Graham and Bake's comes in for Stack at half back.

Caesar, I could be wrong but I have a feeling you rate Dow as part of our future!
Thanks for the match reporting

Look I am just saying it looks like we might have a pretty handy player no more no less at this very early stage, the Shedda comparison is real .
