Running through the banner

When did the RFC players stop ripping through the banner each week when they run out onto the ground?

It looks a bit weird to see the Cheer Squad hold up this huge banner and for the players to lift it up to run UNDER it rather than THROUGH it.

I've always thought that RFC had the biggest and best banners of all teams (except perhaps for the crappy one at the Hawks game this week).. so I don't think it does the effort to create the banners justice when the boys look like they're trying not to make even a tiny tear....

Has RFC gone green and is trying to save paper and use the same base for the banner each week - or have I missed something?

Having said that, I feel that the whole banner thing is a bit outdated and out of place with modern footy.. But if you're going to have them... at least run through the buggers...

Are you :crazy with all the paper cuts. Under the AFL blood rule wed be lucky to be able to field a team by half-time.

I held up the banner for us at the freo game and let me tell you they reused NUTHING!! Dave the cheersquad guy came and used a stanley knife to cut the sticky tape off the poles, we grabbed up all the paper and put it straight into the bin down the race...

Some of the other clubs (Freo) have plastic sides with the sponsors printed on them which is stuck to the pole and just in the middle is crepe paper stuff but even they dump it.......

I figured it was just a precaution thing
Last thing you need is a player triping over some of the sticky tape holding it together and injuring himself

Whitey's never run through a banner even in his under age footy years. Asked him why at a function once and he just said "never have done, no big deal as far as I'm concerned".

So I don't think it's superstitious as far as he goes.

has not happened to the hawks yet most of our guys rip through acouple will touch it for luck while going through after all others had ripped it and we used to have one go around that was danny jacobs he is gone now

Going to the footy as a youngin', i do admit that i enjoyed the boys ripping through the banner like real tigers and the supporters blaring out "OH WE'RE FROM TIGERLAND.." but what can you do...

My understanding has always been that the players are worried about tripping over and hurting themselves. :-*

Also, it might break your focus a bit if you get tangled up in all the tape and paper as you go through. :p

That said....... what a bunch of primadona pussies! Has ANY player EVER sustained an injury due to a "banner malfunction"?
I mean really! They're so obsessed with trying to be professional, and switched on, and focused that they've turned into sad caricatures of self obsessed sportsmen.

It reminds me of training with my local footy club (after 20 odd years of me not touching a footy :p :-[ What was I thinking)... After EVERY drill all the players walk around tapping each other on the back or butt and saying "well done, good stuff" or words to that effect, except we REALLY SUCK!
I think it's supposed to create team spirit or some other psycho analytic bulldust. It's like they've seen the AFL players do it 400 times in a game, so therefore they should do it to.

What a complete and utter toss!

I'm not feeling team spirit! I'm feeling like I wanna smack some heads in and tell em to keep their *smile* hands well and truly away from my ass!

Sorry, back on topic....

Somewhere, someone has decided to go under the banner to "be safe" and now every player thinks they should do it too so they can be just as serious and professional as the other guy.

Pathetic.

Well said Courty, couldnt have said it better myself...the new generation of average player is soft as s%^#@. Self absorbed, over paid prima donna's, caring more about "hair care" contracts than getting the ball....Dont get me started on tip toeing thru the banner, bloody hell.....why cant they talk to the Cheer squad and get them to build a "weak spot" through the middle so at least to us punters in the outer it looks like they are BUSTING THROUGH IT....
They probably all have pics of Rudd and Wong on their bedroom walls, and a mouse on their pc's in the shape of a melting iceberg with a furlorn looking polar bear on it, uttering the words, "please save me from these nasty greenhouse gases"....

People are so soft and gulible these days.....
