When did the RFC players stop ripping through the banner each week when they run out onto the ground?

It looks a bit weird to see the Cheer Squad hold up this huge banner and for the players to lift it up to run UNDER it rather than THROUGH it.

I've always thought that RFC had the biggest and best banners of all teams (except perhaps for the crappy one at the Hawks game this week).. so I don't think it does the effort to create the banners justice when the boys look like they're trying not to make even a tiny tear....

Has RFC gone green and is trying to save paper and use the same base for the banner each week - or have I missed something?

Having said that, I feel that the whole banner thing is a bit outdated and out of place with modern footy.. But if you're going to have them... at least run through the buggers...

White seems to have some banner phobia and always runs around it. No team seems to smash through it anymore and I reckon these will be the next thing gone in a game we once enjoyed.

The paper they use is very absorbent.

The players are worried their hair care products will be sucked from their heads onto the paper leaving them with terrible hair in front of thousands of fans.

Thats actually superstition. Its meant to be good luck if one player runs around the banner. White's the designated one.

I think that after so many banner tears the cheer squad now makes them a bit too tough for our mob. IN some cases they may even make a weaker "window" in the centre for them to run through, but the wide receivers in our team need to go wider and run around the outside.

Well it hasn't worked for 27 years then.

The banners are a feature of our game. Make sure we keep them.

Being Canberra based, I know those followers of the rugby codes are very envious of what the AFL cheer squads produce. The other codes can't hold a candle (no pun intended) to the effort of the AFL teams. But then again, those NRL cheer leaders look pretty appealing!

Then if we keep them - players should run through them with a bit of gusto.. Looks to me like they're almost embarrassed as they go under (both the banner and in the games in general)...

I'd take the banners over the pom pom girls of the NRL. I've noticed alot recently that they are almost untouched. I wondered if maybe the players are afraid of tripping over it and looking like a goose.

Are you sure ? How do you know it couldn't have been worse ?

A lot of teams try to prevent damage to the banner now. I read somewhere that it's a recycling/cost cutting thing.

Yeah why don't any teams run through the banner anymore, they all lift it up and run under it.

The banners do look a lot stronger than they used to - do they not use paper anymore?

This world we live in bewilders me more and more every day. Even if they break the banner surely they can still recycle it, no?

I meant re-use rather than recycle.
