Ruckman

What about this Hannath bloke from SA is he any good is he worth a look or will he get snapped up by the locals.

Will we re rookie Rangamania.

Claw is a rap for big Hannath

Who claw likes is not really relevant, IMO. He is just another bloke on the internet with an opinion. A WA based one at that. Tigerbob has credibility as he has worked in the field.

Yet Vickery still remains one of our mvp's..
High risk, high reward.

Too true Oldie, the hit rate with ruckman in the top ten has increased dramatically over the years. If one also considers the fact they rarely lose value, then pick 9 isn't paying overs at all.

I can agree with taking a ruckman as an early pick, if that ruckman is already a multi-dimensional player.
This means:
1. Has the mobility to play around the ground, as well as centre bounce tap outs.
2. Can average more than 5 marks a game.
3. Has the versatility to play as a genuine marking / goal-kicking forward.
4. Kicks and handballs accurately.

These are the 4 key checkpoints that can be applied to an early pick ruckman.
Kreuzer, Natanui, Vickery are good examples of these points being met.

Also, reckon that each checkpoint missed is a round further back to be picked.
Clearly, a ruckman without mobility, can't mark, can't kick goals, and has shaky disposal, even if they can tap well, falls into the late rounds.

In greater Tiger history, Michael Green & Neil Balme would have been excellent early picks because they passed each and every one of these checkpoints.

In the 2012 ND,
if we contemplate using our pick #9 on a ruckman,
that ruckman needs to b e able to tick off every one of those checkpoints.

Agree, well written Phantom.

Not sure you can ever play Maric, Vickery and Grundy in the same side.

Of the three that you've listed:
Maric wouldn't be, and wasn't, an early pick because he could only tick two of the boxes in his junior years.
He has added a tick to a third box, in his development.
He fits into playing as the main tap ruckman, and can play around the ground.

Vickery was an early pick because he ticks all four boxes.
He fits comfortably into playing as a key forward / changing ruckman,
And, can play first ruck if needed.
A genuine mobile CHF at Tigerland would allow Vickery to play more as ruck/forward.

I haven't seen enough of Grundy to assess as to whether he would tick all four boxes.
If he did,
I would welcome the RFC to be in a position where it didn't have to rush a talented junior ruckman into the seniors.
And, there's always a chance for rotations, over time.

I rarely look at the list in terms of a 22 or 25 players in one game.
I prefer to look at a list as 40+ players over a 5 to 10 year period, with respective changes.
So Maric, Vickery & Grundy in the same 22/25 becomes irrelevant.
