Royce Hart

As KB says in this clip, "he is the greatest".

I remember one game against Carlton at Princes Park where we hit the front in the last (having trailed all day), then Royce took himself to the half back line and just kept marking and repelling every Carlton attack.

Check him out.
One of my regrets is I wasn't old enough to witness Royce's genius & much of that magnificent Tiger era.
Thanks for posting that clip Quickdraw. Fantastic compilation.

Hope our Champion is back to good health soon.

Only good thing about being the age I am atm was having the opportunity of watching Royce play. Wearing that wooly jumper with number 4 on my back at school and playing footy at every given moment with your mates. Calling out “Royce” every time you flew for a mark but never being able to emulate his ability to float in the air.
Simple times.
Great times.

Did the same, DA.
I think all Richmond supporting kids dreamed of being Royce (maybe even some non Tiger supporters just secretly).

And when you were running and bouncing the ball and about to be tackled you'd bounce it out in front and not take possession just like Bartlett!

Royce Hart’s arm surgery a roaring success but the former Tiger faces slow recovery from ‘troublesome’ injuries (paywalled)

Richmond legend Royce Hart faces a “slow” recovery as he remains in the intensive care unit of the Royal Hobart Hospital after a serious head-on car crash on Sunday.

A four-times premiership Tiger and dual premiership captain, Hart, 73, has a broken arm, several broken ribs, sternum injuries and lacerations to his face following the two-car accident in Hobart.

The Tiger “Immortal” and AFL Team of the Century centre half-forward is not allowed visitors yet.

His older brother Lance said Royce’s recovery would take time.

“It’s going to be a slow process, from what I can gather,” Lance said.

“I spoke to Royce on the phone and he said he wasn’t feeling too good. He didn’t say a lot. He’s still pretty sore.

“They’ve repaired the broken arm and that has come up all right.

“The injuries aren’t life-threatening, but they are troublesome.”

I know Lance and the Hart family and others closely associated with them reasonably well. (I played with Lance's sons - Robbie and Steve.)

Its widely acknowledged that growing up, Lance was actually considered the better player than Royce. Dunno if that's true but it was often brought up. Just sayin.

I lived thru our golden period of the 70's , saw most games live
and while I admired Hart , I was in awe with KB
his ability to read the play and be where the ball was so often was freakish

most people , all sides , did seem to be in awe of Royce , good looking , incredibly fair/clean and amazing all round skills

but so many oppo supporters hated KB with a passion , this weedly little guy with the comb over flapping in the breeze seemed to be the opposite of Royce in many ways
"how can that thing beat us" seemed to be the vibe

at Waverly one day he got a ball close to the defensive goal , ran the length of the ground and kicked a point
then sometime later picked up another ball in the same back pocket , dodged everyone on the field and goaled

It must have etched on my brain , playing a practice match with Swinburne Uni on Glenferrie oval I try the same thing , only I'm the second string ruck playing in the back pocket , the problem is by the time you get deep in the forward line you are gassed out and legs are like jelly , the first one I turned over in the goal square trying to handball to the fullforward the second time I chipped to the full forward , luckily he marked and goaled , KB would have been proud of me , I gave away that handball capper

anyhow , roll on 1980 finals series , and KB has set a bench mark for small forwards that will never be equalled or beaten ending with 7 in the GF

despite all that admiration , I've never had a comb over

And don’t forget the fact he kicked 21 goals in the 3 Finals.

Royce was on Channel 9 news last night will have to try find the video

The greatest of all time is at home, 12 broken ribs, broken arm with a plate in it.

“It hurts a bit. I’ll get by - people from Richmond are tough.”

I loved the photo in the paper you have there - you can’t see it in your cut but in the original some one had snuck a framed photo of the great man kicking the ball in tiger colours - love that he is still proud to promote his footy career.
